"Please call your Senators' state or D.C. office."

"President Bush's Department of Homeland Security bill may slow down S. 890 because it's on the Congressional front burner. Sen. Lieberman has called hearings on DHS Thursday in his Governmental Affairs Committee."

"In a commentary of concern over gun-related crime and violence, Justice Francis Sweeney held it was vital Cincinnati be allowed to sue handgun manufacturers for arming criminals and kids and creating a public nuisance."

"In the bad old days of racial segregation in the South, local officials used literacy tests to keep blacks from voting. But these days the forefront of small-town civil rights abuse is not in the South, but in Massachusetts."

"Now the Bay State, the land of the formerly free, has erected another bureaucratic hurdle to gun ownership. The police chiefs of Lawrence, Andover, North Andover, and Methuen have agreed, according to a local news report, to require gun license applicants to get certification from a doctor stating that no medical or psychological problems would prevent the person from owning a gun."

"The Constitution protects the right of missionaries, politicians and others to knock on doors without first getting permission from local authorities, the Supreme Court ruled Monday."

"It is offensive, not only to the values protected by the First Amendment, but to the very notion of a free society, that in the context of everyday public discourse a citizen must first inform the government of her desire to speak to her neighbors and then obtain a permit to do so."

"I was disappointed when the undersecretary of transportation for security testified before the Senate Commerce Committee that pilots -- whom we entrust with multimillion-dollar machines and thousands of lives -- aren't to be trusted with sidearms."

"When I was in the Marines, I learned that to defeat the enemy, you must think like the enemy. For this reason, I believe that the Justice Department is better prepared to handle aviation security than Federal Aviation Administration bureaucrats. Do they really think that a door -- not a 9-millimeter gun -- is a deterrent to future Mohamed Attas?"

"A proposed federal homeland-security department would help local officials gather information and find resources to fight terrorism more easily, Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge told the nation's mayors Monday."

"... the agency ... would eliminate overlapping responsibilities of federal agencies."

"'Ridge said the FBI and CIA should remain separate from the new agency and the department should be "a customer of these agencies, not their master.'"

Give us another place, they plead

"On a nice sunny day like Sunday, 81-year-old Bill Hall couldn't think of a better place to be than at the Shelby Farms gun range with his 12-gauge Beretta."

"Dressed in a green fishnet hunting vest and safari hat, Hall was one of a couple of dozen people who stopped by the range for a relaxing afternoon of safe gunplay."

"The overwhelming consensus among historians and law professors is that the Second Amendment guarantees that every responsible, law-abiding adult may have guns. It is no coincidence that the few scholars who disagree all are gun-control advocates. In contrast, endorsers of the individual-right view include not only gun-control opponents, but also numerous scholars who support gun control yet honestly acknowledge the overwhelming historical evidence."

If only lawful folks could carry in N.Y.C.

"shot three people and tried to set patrons at a Manhattan bar on fire Sunday before being wounded by officers and arrested in what police said was a racially motivated attack."

KABA NOTE: Unarmed women had to rush this wretch to keep a bunch of people from being killed, and possibly even burned to death after being doused with kerosene. Had this happened in, say, Arizona, there's a good chance the fellow would've been dead by the time cops arrived, and unarmed women wouldn't have had to jump him.

*A lesson we can learn from our enemies!*

"When politicians say they want to hear from constituents on issues like addiction and gun violence, it's more than lip-service. Experts say that despite corporate lobbying campaigns and big-money influence in the halls of government, individuals can still make a difference by contacting federal and state lawmakers."

"FATHER Rene Enriquez keeps a shiny rifle and ammunition in his bedroom closet - a move he says is necessary for protection against the Abu Sayyaf bandits.

'As a priest, I learned that we should leave our fate to God. But in this situation where your personal safety is under constant threat, people need to arm themselves,' said Father Enriquez.

"Jimmie Malone of Jacksonville can't understand why he is still being punished for a bar fight that happened in 1983.

Because of his felony conviction -- he was found guilty of assault and given two years' probation -- Malone and about 647,000 other felons living in the state cannot vote, hold office or apply for gun permits.

Of that number, about 1 in 10 -- 63,700 -- are still in prison."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888).
