Handgun enthusiasts from the tri-city area and as far away as Phoenix, California, New Mexico and Nevada came together over the weekend to take part in the first-ever Northern Arizona Classic, a United States Practical Shooting Association-sanctioned target competition.
About 100 shooters of various skill levels took aim at 10 different stages during the two-day timed contest, where competitors moved around within a confined area and shot stationary paper targets with a single pistol. |

Superstar Angelina Jolie is a fiercely protective mom. "If anybody comes into my home and tries to hurt my kids, I have no problem shooting them," she says. Spoken like a true bad-*ss mother (frankly, I'd defy any parent to deny they'd do the same to protect their kids).
Jolie, 33, who's expecting fraternal twin girls with hottie Brad Pitt, 44, says they have guns in their home to deal with harmful intruders. This makes sense, given their high profile and the millions of people who'd kill to get close to the Jolie-Pitts and their four adorable little kids. Indeed, rumors swirled months ago of a botched kidnapping attempt on their daughter, Shiloh, 2. |

Angelina Jolie has armed herself with the same guns she used in the movie Tomb Raider, and wouldn't hesitate to use the weapons to protect her growing family.
The Hollywood actress, who is pregnant with twins, admits she and her partner Brad Pitt keep a gun at home for their own safety.
And her action roles in movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith have taught her how to handle such a weapon.
She says, "I bought original real guns of the type we used in Tomb Raider for security." |

Columnist Tom Eblen of the Lexington, Kentucky Herald-Leader has proven to the world that he doesn’t know what a “right” is. He thinks it is something that you can “compromise” over. He thinks it is something that can be endlessly tinkered with. He seems not to realize that a “right” is something that is supposed to be insoluble, unchangeable, permanent. ... Ridiculously he says that if we don’t compromise this one right, our 2nd Amendment right, it will be taken away. And hypocritically, after using fear to urge us to compromise, he accuses those of us interested in safeguarding the 2nd Amendment of using “fear” tactics. |

In B.C., the RCMP's chief firearms officer can supply decommissioned guns to certified gun-safety course instructors, a federal RCMP firearms centre official told The Province. To be decommissioned, the weapons have their firing pins ground off or removed, or parts removed from the trigger mechanism.
Those guns can come from border seizures, they can be handed over by the courts, or turned in by individuals, but are generally not weapons used in crimes, the official said. |

A new, controversial gun store ad has some wondering about the real meaning behind, "Buy them cheap. Bury them deep." The radio ad, airing in the Houston, Texas area also says, "This is Jim Pruett calling from federal prison. Well, not yet."
The ad is for Jim Pruett's Guns and Ammo in northwest Harris County, Texas. It then carries a political message, "Come this November, many could be incarcerated if a bunch of naive voters elect misguided, anti-gun politicians to office."
One line stands out. It says, "Jim Pruett's guns and ammo, where we say 'Buy them cheap. Bury them deep.'" Some are asking, "Bury who deep?" |

Armed police have fired their guns more times by mistake than in the line of duty.
A Daily Mirror investigation revealed officers have shot each other, hit patrol cars and blasted a range of household items in a two-year catalogue of blunders.
One gun cop even shot himself by accident.
Police opened fire 46 times in error between January 2006 and March 2008. In the same period marksmen used their guns in real threats 18 times. |

Potential victims who harm or kill apparent intruders in their homes or vehicles would get the legal benefit of the doubt under a just-passed bill destined to get Gov. Ted Strickland's signature.
Sponsored by state Sen. Stephen Buehrer (R., Delta) and pushed by the National Rifle Association, the measure served as a magnet for changes to Ohio's 4-year-old law allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns. |

Fresh out of medical training I made the mistake of asking patients if they owned guns. I quickly learned either to skip the question or explain my intentions beforehand. In a good-hearted attempt to promote gun safety, I found myself accused of colluding with the "government gun grabbers."
The question was useless anyway. Most every family in this area has guns: rifles and shotguns in racks; handguns in the car and next to the bed.
It made me wonder if I needed one. |

"One of the messages I have for people has been that on issues like gun ownership, sportsmen and hunters and people who lawfully have guns to protect their families have nothing to fear form an Obama administration. The NRA may argue differently because I have supported in the past what I consider to be common-sense gun laws, like strong background checks. But I actually think that a lot of gun owners will feel confident that I believe in the Second Amendment."

May every vessel be armed!
Piracy of commercial vessels is a major problem in the world, especially in the Strait of Malacca, which separates Indonesia and Malasia. Yet, international law prohibits vessels from keeping small arms on board to protect their vessels from piracy.
Presumably, the solution, according to the promoters of international disarmament, is to radio the Coast Guard or Navy. After all, when minutes count, the good guys are only hours away.
Will the stupidity ever end?

The letter in Wednesday's edition, "Restrict weapons," is yet another display of a well-intentioned person who has absolutely no knowledge of firearms or facts. She refers to the Second Amendment as giving guns to too many irresponsible people. I guess, and primarily due to the major media historically having an anti-gun agenda and choosing to not report on them, she is unaware of the 2.5 million times each year in our country that an average person stops a crime due to the mere presence of a gun, and in most cases not firing it. Does she also suggest that too many people are abusing some of the other amendments, such as the right of free speech and religion because of all the hate mongers and race baiters we are exposed to daily? |

By Ted Nugent
I love people. Well, most people, that is. I can't stand lawbreakers, or rude, inconsiderate folks who just don't seem to care about their fellow man. As a gung-ho lover of life, I am a rather gregarious chap, and though I have my extended private periods for reflection, most always you will find me hanging out with a gaggle of workin'-hard, playin'-hard Americans. There is always laughter and a barbecue going on where the Nugent family gathers with friends. So it was recently in Louisville, Ky., at what can best be described as the ultimate Nugent party: about 50,000 of my closest friends gathered around the quintessential "we the people" grassroots American campfire of freedom at the 137th annual NRA family meetings. |

Several dozen Montana politicians, including Secretary of State Brad Johnson, have adopted an unconventional take on the Second Amendment case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court: Theyve threatened secession. D.C. v. Heller, the first substantive Second Amendment case the Court has heard in nearly 70 years, could definitively settle whether the right to bear arms is an individual right or a collective right.
In a joint resolution, the Montana politicians argue that when Washington approved the state constitution, including a clause granting any person the right to bear arms, upon the Treasure States entry into the Union in 1889, the federal government recognized that clause as consistent with the Second Amendment. |

The hail of bullets that flew in Harlem on Memorial Day put a new spotlight on an old problem. Gun violence is on the rise in many New York neighborhoods, statistics show, and many fear the mayhem may only get worse once schools close for the summer. "We need a plan of action," said Jackie Rowe-Adams of the Harlem group Stop Another Violent End. "Summer is not even here yet and we need to get a handle on this now." |

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Bloomberg has taken particular pride in the construction boom...
But the deadly crane collapse that killed two people and injured another on the Upper East Side on Friday morning is now threatening to tarnish that legacy. It was the latest in a series of construction-related accidents including a crane collapse in March that killed seven people that have left New Yorkers uneasy, with a growing concern that Mr. Bloomberg may have let high-rise construction proliferate without adequate oversight.
Mr. Bloomberg told reporters. Keep in mind that construction is a dangerous business and you will always have fatalities.

Recently I took Charley Reese’s advice and exercised my Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. I’m trying to exercise as many of those constitutional rights as possible these days, while available, given the increasing tendency of governments and do-gooders to subjugate, circumvent or creatively interpret those rights.
Fortunately I have not had occasion to try out the Fifth, Sixth or Seventh Amendments, but I thoroughly have enjoyed the First and now am looking forward to the Second. Gettin’ while the gettin’s good, I guess – one never knows these days. |

Chelsea Clinton told supporters in Billings that the country needs to do more with gun control laws, during the final visit on her two day tour campaigning on her mother's behalf in the Magic City. During a question and answer session before seniors and other supporters at the Yellowstone County Council on Aging Office Friday morning, Chelsea said, "We also need to do more with gun control. And my mom supports- naturally what she supported in New York. Which is: we have different gun control laws in New York City than we do in upstate New York." |

The headline "Opinions split on gun law" (May 19) suggests that there is a genuine balanced dichotomy of opinion regarding House Bill 89 and the concealed carry of firearms. I must take issue. I would suggest that, contrary to the writer's implication, very few thinking people actually oppose this important step forward in personal freedom and safety. Whenever this topic is discussed, we always hear a few individuals' conjecture about horrific scenarios that never seem to occur. Indeed, when was the last time you heard about an individual with a Georgia firearms license (or any other of the more than 40 states which issue permits) using a firearm in an untoward manner? It just doesn't happen. |

Does any one remember the last attempt for ballistic fingerprinting in New York? It failed [May 21, Gazette]! If you are even the slightest bit concerned about the gun rights movement, you will already know about what is happening in New York state. They implemented a database of fired bullets and shell casings from all new handguns sold in the state. This was an attempt to track down the owner if a bullet or shell casing was found at the scene of a crime. Gun owners and manufactures told them it wouldnt work. They did it anyway, adding to the cost of law-abiding New York sportsmen. Now they find out it didnt work for all the reasons they were told, plus at least one new reason: Different materials take on the markings differently. |

A former Chicago police officer charged with being part of a ring that falsely arrested and stole from drug dealers has detailed how the operation led to a plot to kill two colleagues, according to interview excerpts released on Friday. The scandal in the elite Special Operations Section helped lead to a change in the Chicago police department with the appointment of a new superintendent, former FBI agent Jody Weis. In what was described as his first interview on the matter, FBI informant Keith Herrera told CBS' "60 Minutes" that pressure to get drug dealers and their guns off the streets led first to cutting corners and then to crime.
