Background checks for gun purchases are supposed to be a filter, allowing ordinary people to purchase guns while screening out those prohibited from possessing guns. The best thing about background checks is that they protect honest gun sellers from inadvertently selling to a prohibited person. But the reality is that the system offers few other benefits. |

They dont look like heroes, but they are. I spent several days with a group of Ohio teachers who want to protect their students. They learned to stop an armed attack in their schools. They learned to treat the injured. These teachers became the good guy with a gun and bandages.. and they need our help. |

Last week, Rolling Stone published an article by David S. Cohen, a law professor who thinks the Second Amendment should be repealed. The Second Amendment needs to be repealed because it is outdated, a threat to liberty and a suicide pact, writes Cohen. When the Second Amendment was adopted in 1791, there were no weapons remotely like the AR-15 assault rifle and many of the advances of modern weaponry were long from being invented or popularized. |

Fresh off the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, the Supreme Court refused Monday to hear a challenge to assault weapons bans passed in Connecticut and New York after the Newtown elementary school massacre of 2012. The challenges were denied, as expected, without comment from the court. Just last December five days after a terrorist attack killed 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif. the justices had refused to hear a challenge to a Chicago suburb's ban on such semi-automatic weapons. |

What do the M1911 service pistol and the .380 ACP cartridge have in common? Both are classics, to be sure. More to the point, though, both resulted from the same inventive mind: that of John Moses Browning. Its true that the first was more directly a result of Brownings mechanical geniusapparently an outgrowth of one of several distinct pistol designs patented in 1897, possibly as a hedge against which might ultimately prove most efficaciouswhile the second was more probably at his behest, with actual development likely carried out by the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. |

On the cover of the New York Daily News was a picture of an American Marine wearing battle regalia in Iraq. The headline over it read: No civilian should own this gun. The editors of the Daily News, thinking themselves clever, asked: Hey, NRA: This Marine served in Iraq and says assault rifles should be banned. Does that make him a gun-grabbing commie, too? |

Progressives like to insist that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects a collective, rather than an individual, right to keep and bear arms. Or, put another way, they say that the only right Americans have to the ownership of lethal weaponry exists within the context of state-sanctioned military service. As a result, progressives conclude that there is nothing in place to stop the federal government from prohibiting the private ownership of firearms and allowing access to weapons only to those who belong to the National Guard the modern descendant of early-American state and local militia forces. |

Its coming.
Those who have seen it before say a rush on gun and ammo sales is on the verge of happening again. Thats typically been the case among gun owners fearful that the government will try to limit their purchases.
But this time, there are also signs that a spike in gun sales has begun among gay people, lesbians and others in the LGBT community. |

Barely a week after the worst mass shooting in the nation's history, state Sen. Florida Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio voted on party lines this evening on four gun bills that surfaced after the Orlando massacre. All four bills died. What am I going to tell 49 grieving families? What am I going to tell the families of those that are still in the hospital fighting for their lives?' Nelson said at a news conference after the votes. 'What am I going to tell the trauma surgeon whose blood-stained shoes have been shown in a picture on so many news programs and who said he didnt know, in the midst of the screams and the cries, if they were black or white, or gay or straight, as they brought in over 40, all at one time, into that trauma operating room? |

Connecticut lawmakers and local gun advocates commented on the United States Supreme Court's decision to not to consider a challenge of the state's law banning assault weapons. The Connecticut Citizens' Defense League along with other plaintiffs challenged Connecticut's ban on certain semi-automatic firearms in 2013. The decision came after "a lower court's ruling refusing to strike down on Second Amendment grounds," CCDL said. |

The sharp divide on gun laws and the charged politics around them will be on display on the Senate floor Monday, when lawmakers vote on four gun bills, all expected to fail amid partisan acrimony. Roughly a week after the Orlando massacre, the votes will instead provide political fodder as the two parties battle for control of the White House and Senate. |

A tug of war between the First Amendment protection of free speech and the Second Amendment right to bear arms will play out before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta Tuesday. Known as Docs vs. Glocks, the case is a challenge to a Florida law that says doctors may not ask patients or the parents of children they treat about guns in the home. While Tuesdays legal debate involves only a law in Florida, other gun-friendly states, like Georgia, are watching closely to see whether the state can successfully defend its statute. |

Senators rejected two gun background proposals Monday evening largely along party lines just over a week after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Senators voted 53-47 on a proposal from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that would reauthorize funding for the National Criminal Instant Background Check System (NICS) and incentivize states to share mental health records with the federal system. But 60 votes were needed to move forward with the proposal. |

So now we have renewed focus on gun laws, a flurry of activity in Congress and national attention on Pat Toomey. Donald Trump (left) and Pat Toomey (right). In the middle are, AR-15 rifles lining a shelf in the gun library at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms National Tracing Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia December 15, 2015. Oh, and with Toomey in a serious re-election challenge, charges from opponent Katie McGinty that Toomey's on the wrong side of guns and/or pandering to make it look as if he's on the right side of guns - whatever that might be. |
