The two sides are discussing two totally different things. A dispute can never be settled if neither party agrees on the actual subject of that dispute.
This is not merely a case of two sides of the same coin, its two different coins. One coin is trying to solve the problem of the violence. The other coin merely wants to remove the first coin from the argument.

Many may not remember their basic U.S. history courses as to why the Second Amendment exists in the first place. Certainly, when enacted, there was no thought of restricting the type of firearm or where or who could carry one. So its placement as the second most valued freedom in the Bill of Rights had nothing to do with personal safety or hunting these were already assumed. It was specifically placed right after freedoms of religion, speech, press, and assembly to make certain that these freedoms were never taken from us. It was aimed (pun intended) squarely at the government. But certainly we have no fear of the government today, right? |

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners Wednesday voted unanimously to place a Second Amendment Preservation Ordinance on the ballot in November. The move followed a public hearing where county residents gave a mixture of testimony for and against the measure. Supporters said county residents need to send a clear message to gun control advocates around the state about the gun rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Some urged the commissioners to go ahead and pass the ordinance, rather than waiting for a countywide vote. |
