Have Gun Will Travel: Under Senator's New Bill, Concealed Weapon Permits

The Vitter bill treats concealed carry permits much the same as drivers' licenses, where one state's license is recognized in all other states.

In addressing the matter of reciprocity, the first concern of GOA and Sen.Vitter is that it be done constitutionally and that it respects states' rights.
Unlike another senate reciprocity measure, S. 388, Vitter's bill does not establish "national standards" for concealed carry. It simply says that states allowing concealed carry must recognize the CCW permits of other states.

Numerous people have told me it can't be done, but I don't believe it. Our worsening problem of gun violence requires creative and extraordinary action, and I believe we can do it if we have the will.

Here in Northwest Indiana, we use roadblocks to check for seat belt violations and to check for drunk drivers. You can drive a car, and you can drink alcohol. You cannot, however, drive drunk or without fastening your seat belt. It is against the law!

If we can create roadblocks for illegal immigrants, seat-belt violators, people who drive while under the influence of alcohol, and for bringing fruits and vegetables into another state, we most certainly can search for illegal weapons.

Carrying a gun? Around with you? Isn't that kind of stupid... and dangerous? Why does society even allow people to do that?

These are questions that are always raised by someone when the topic of carrying a concealed handgun by law-abiding citizens (CCW).

And while everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, it tends to be best when opinions are grounded in facts. Here are some to consider.

The families of 6 young victims, who were shot and killed by an off-duty sheriff deputy last October, raised more than 70 thousand dollars to buy the home and have it demolished.

Driving past this house in Crandon where 6 people were gunned down last October hasn't been easy for the victims' families.

Dianne Schultz, Bradley Schultz's mother, says "I have images of what happened in that house and how my son laid in that house for all that time."

Submitter's note: Why was this given such little media attention? Because an "LEO"?

Some Southern Tier counties could see an extension in rifle hunting soon. The New York State Assembly passed a bill for Steuben, Chemung, and Yates counties that would authorize rifle hunting until 2011. The bill is a response to the area's increasing deer population and declining hunters, which led to more crop damage and more deer and car accidents. The Bill has already been approved by the Senate and now goes to the governor for his signature.

FL: A responsible idea: Put GPS chips in guns

Would it be such a terrible idea to ask members of our society to have a simple chip attached to their weapons?

If this were a requirement, not only would we be able to trace the trade and location of weapons more thoroughly but we also could enforce more rigid repercussions for those in possession of unregistered weaponry.

Of course, the database and tracking system would take a bit of time to implement, but wouldn't it be worth it to have this substantial resource at hand?

A second-time burglary victim gave a would-be thief more than just a fright Saturday evening, police said. The south Fulton County homeowner shot and wounded a teen breaking into his townhouse in the 6200 block of Flat Trace, near Union City, police said. "The guy hears the front doorbell ring" just before 6 p.m., Fulton County police spokesman Scott McBride said. "When he goes down to answer it, a 16-year-old kicks in his back door." The man went for his gun, fired twice at the teen and hit him once in the arm, McBride said. The youth ran, and the man chased him into a nearby wooded area and lost him. The resident told police it was the second time this month his home had been broken into.

Andy Davidson looked up at the young man standing next to him and smiled. Perhaps there was a bit of a grimace in there, too, because his 18-year-old son, Lee, had just been asked about beating his father in a recent trapshooting event. "He beat everyone (in their shooting group) yesterday with a 97 in handicap," Andy said. The Davidsons are part of a contingent of thousands of in-and-out-of-state shooters converging on the Cardinal Center this week north of Columbus for the 122nd Ohio State Trapshooting Tournament. It wraps up today, June 22.

A recent pro-gun letter ["Concealed carry could save your life," June 10] citing the "facts" (2.5 million crimes per year prevented and lower crime rates) is straight out of the NRA "Handbook of Handy Facts" and got me to wondering when was the last time I heard the National Rifle Association mention anything about rifles. It's all about handguns, carry permits, and a warm, fuzzy feeling of safety because I'm packin' heat. Or maybe the people around me are packin'. Somehow the thought of more guns on the street does not make me feel safer.
