"YOU must realize that the antis desire to take YOUR firearm from you, any firearm you own, for whatever reason. Oh, they may say they dont want your hunting rifle but what is a hunting rifle today is a 'sniper weapon' of tomorrow. A duck gun today is a 'weapon of mass destruction' tomorrow. And remember, you dont have a legitimate 'need' for a .50 BMG rifle. And you dont 'need' ANYTHING that is semi-auto." |

"A few years ago Dean was the governor of Vermont, a tiny state with more than its share of leftwing ideologues: Patrick Lahey and Jim Jeffords in the U.S. Senate and a self-proclaimed Socialist named Bernie Sanders in the House of Representatives. Dean was right in line with the Vermont tradition of his colleagues, taking ultraliberal positions on abortion, homosexual special rights, health care, Social Security, Medicare and, of course, the taxes to pay for it all." |

"I've mentioned many times that there's a culture change underway regarding women and firearms. Here's more evidence. The rather frothy friend-bio of pop star Jewel, Revealing Jewel: An Intimate Portrait from Family and Friends, contains this bit:"
"Q: What are your guilty pleasures?"
"A: I love lingerie and jewelry. And I don't know if I should say this, but I like firearms. Ty just gave me a lever action Winchester 30-30. It's pretty much a vintage gun -- the gun that won the West. They made a limited series of 500 with Ty, to honor his breaking the record with seven all-around titles. It's beautiful. I have number two." |

"We've done a philosophical flip-flop on civil liberties. The Bill of Rights, conceived to protect the individual from the powers of the government, is being steadily eroded in a hapless attempt to craft a more perfect society."
"The space the Constitution carved out where a citizen would be safe from state intrusion has been whittled perilously thin, and the justification needed for invading that space grown increasingly flimsy."
"We've always had to wrestle with the government to keep it from stealing our civil rights covers. But two wars -- one on drugs, the other on terrorism -- have tipped the balance so much in the state's favor that we risk losing our birthright." |

"Gun dealers have to know they will be held accountable when they abet criminals. But here's the thing: Even though the Justice Department says it increased prosecutions of gun dealers by 43 percent since 1999, only 578 prosecutions were brought last year - out of an estimated 150,000 violations, according to Americans for Gun Safety. That left 99.6 percent of illegal purchases unaddressed. You almost can't blame the gun dealers for playing those odds."
------- Research by Chuckie Schumer's office shows that a tiny percentage of gun dealers (one tenth of one percent of all federally licensed gun dealers) is responsible for these illegal sales. It's entirely logical to assume that the 150,000 violations were being carried out by the same small bunch of dealers, and ergo, it's possible that the 578 prosecutions punished the majority of the "bad apples." |

"A local chapter of the National Rifle Association I belong to made it clear that they didn't want to get their hands dirty fighting the media monopoly in New Jersey. Instead, they hired a 'professional lobbyist' and paid her a six-figure salary. That was several years ago when a six-figure salary wasn't that easy to come by. At an annual meeting of the chapter, I asked her what her media strategy was, considering that the media has always been the leading proponent for gun control. Her response? 'Hrmmph!' " |

"Across America, states are fighting the war on terror by their own rules, creating a new landscape where the adversary -- and the acts that draw intelligence gathering by law enforcement -- can shift on a city or state line."
"So far, the debate over the nation's approach to terrorism has centered on the federal government -- what the Pentagon and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft are doing."
"But largely unnoticed, cities and states also are assuming new powers to collect intelligence and pursue terrorists, sometimes shadowing officials in Washington, but often adopting notions of terrorism that are more ambitious."
"As a result, a curious, uneven battlefield is emerging, one where cities and states are defining their security on diverse terms, often more broadly than their neighbors and the nation." |
