There are now more non-military government employees who carry guns than there are U.S. Marines, according to a new report.

Open the Books, a taxpayer watchdog group, released a study Wednesday that finds domestic government agencies continue to grow their stockpiles of military-style weapons, as Democrats sat on the House floor calling for more restrictions on what guns American citizens can buy.

I don't own a gun of any sort. I had weapons training in the Army in the 1960s on an M-14, one of the predecessors of today's much more refined methods of attack. They are fine for waging war, to the degree such a violent pursuit has been inevitable since time immemorial. But other than perhaps for SWAT teams, I don't believe they have any place in civilian society.

Nicki Stallard, a transgender woman and head of the Pink Pistols San Jose chapter since 2006, welcomes those new voices. We are mixing oil and water, so to speak, she told me. Some people have thin skins; it goes both ways. I'm glad we have straight allies. We don't have many in the LGBT community with the knowledge and skills to ramp up training to save our lives. Not dealing with straights who want to help us is stupid. The cost of people not getting training means more people will get injured or killed.

The mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando has led to a revival of the debate over assault weapons, but journalist Evan Osnos says the real growth in gun ownership is from small, concealed handguns.

"Something really profound has changed in the way that we use guns," Osnos tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "Concealed carry, as it's known, is now legal in all 50 states."

Osnos, who writes about the evolution of concealed carry in the current issue of The New Yorker, estimates that there are about 13 million people who are licensed to carry a concealed gun in the United States more than 12 times the number of police officers and detectives in America.

The question is whether Scott will appoint state Rep. Charles McBurney, a Jacksonville Republican, to the court. McBurney has been the target of a well-organized effort by the National Rifle Association, which is trying to block his appointment because McBurney refused to hear a bill in the 2016 session that would have shifted the burden of proof from citizens to the state under the self-defense law known as "stand your ground."

According to liberals, the most dangerous place in the world must be a gun show: It's a giant room full of macho, vigilante maniacs with itchy trigger fingers and several guns apiece, with evil assault rifles everywhere, and a mysterious loophole that somehow allows the criminally insane to walk away with AR-15s.

"According to liberals, the safest place in the world is a 'gun-free zone': a school, a bar, a movie theater with a 'no guns' sign, or, since 1993, any American military base.

"But there has never been a mass shooting at a gun show.

A Hancock County man charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a family member at a 2015 childs birthday party walked out of the courtroom a free man Thursday.

After several hours of deliberation, a jury acquitted 33-year-old Clinten Michael Dryer of all charges in the killing of 29-year-old Kenneth Fanning.

Dryer admitted to killing Fanning but claimed he did so in self-defense. His attorneys, Donald Rafferty and Damian Holcomb, argued a justifiable homicide defense.

Perhaps the most obvious is that instead of fighting for civil rights, House Democrats are fighting against civil rights. The main thing Grayson wants to overcome is due process protections, enshrined in the U.S. Constitutions Bill of Rights. Theres also the right to keep and bear arms, the natural right to self defense that is also enshrined in the U.S. Constitutions Bill of Rights. It is a right inherent to the Declaration of Independence, and the bulwark against tyranny.

What do the M1911 service pistol and the .380 ACP cartridge have in common? Both are classics, to be sure. More to the point, though, both resulted from the same inventive mind: that of John Moses Browning. Its true that the first was more directly a result of Brownings mechanical geniusapparently an outgrowth of one of several distinct pistol designs patented in 1897, possibly as a hedge against which might ultimately prove most efficaciouswhile the second was more probably at his behest, with actual development likely carried out by the Union Metallic Cartridge Co.

But in truth he wasnt trained for the split-second decisions he made. Only law enforcement officers get that level of training and as everyone knows, even they make mistakes - or are unlucky.

The odds were decidedly against him.

Rather than being used for self-defense, guns in the home are much more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicides. That would seem to apply in the public sphere as well.

The odds were decidedly against Mr. Riley, yet he prevailed. Would such success stories be more frequent if more people armed themselves? Maybe, as would instances of people killing or injuring themselves or innocents.

President Obama on Wednesday signed into law a measure that will allow federal law enforcement employees to carry their service weapon during a government shutdown or other forced, unpaid time off.

Obama signed the 2015 Federal Law Enforcement Self-Defense and Protection Act after it cleared the Senate last week. The measure -- which allows federal law enforcement to retain their weapon during any furlough period -- did not receive any dissent in either chamber of Congress.

House Democrats have ended their almost 26-hour-long sit-in to push for gun control legislation, pledging on Thursday afternoon to continue their fight once Congress returns from the July Fourth recess.

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., ended the daylong protest surrounded by his Democratic colleagues. The civil rights leader proclaimed that this "is a struggle, but we're going to win this struggle."

Guns left in armory are of no use when needed

Seems that M. Thomas Davis has the same view of guns as Adolph Hitler - all guns in the armory, making gun free zones ["U.S. Army is a model for gun limits," Voices, June 19].

Remember Major Hassan who killed 13 at Fort Hood - all other guns were in the armory. Remember St. Louis, four marine recruiters killed - their guns were in the armory. If Mr. Davis restrictions had been in place at Lexington and Saratoga, there would not have been a confrontation - all the guns would have been in the armory.

Can we make such attacks less likely by limiting access to the tools of the terrorist trade? Some have revived calls for a ban on assault weapons, a small subset of which were prohibited by federal statute from 1994 to 2004, when the law expired. But as I explain below, that ban had virtually no effect on gun violence. Others have proposed adding suspected terrorists to the list of those ineligible to purchase guns at licensed gun stores, a sensible suggestion so long as Congress adopts fair procedures and clear standards for so designating individuals.
