A federal appeals court on Tuesday overturned the conviction of a Montana man who shot and killed a protected grizzly bear near Ronan in 2014, ruling that he should have been able to claim that he acted in self-defense. The three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered Brian Charette's case back to U.S. District Court, where he had been convicted of unlawfully taking a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act. |

Dave Smith has studied bear behavior and bear attacks extensively. He has written books on how to survive bear encounters and animal attacks. I have corresponded with Dave Smith. I find Dave to be the most knowledgeable, well read, and capable critic of the current literature. Dave has worked prodigiously to understand the studies about the effectiveness of bear spray and firearms in stopping bear attacks.

Children and firearms. Those are two words that rarely go together without making people cringe. Shock and awe tend to ensue when someone finds out that both reside in the same home. There is a mentality of hide the firearm and dont tell the children. This way of thinking, however, is a recipe for disaster. Children are curious creatures. If there is something that is labeled taboo, they want to know why and often will try to find out. Should they somehow stumble across a firearm, they will more than likely try to learn what they can about it through hands-on experience. This is a gamble that no one should take.

If you give guns to artists, what would they do with them? The answer: They create art that comments on the neverending escalation of U.S. gun culture. An exhibit at Fairfield University #UNLOAD: Guns in the Hands of Artists is a collection of artworks made with weapons accumulated in New Orleans in a gun buyback program. The exhibit originated in the 1990s, led by artist Brian Borrello and gallery owner Jonathan Ferrara, and has been remounted and is traveling nationwide. Mary Himes and Helen Klisser During brought the exhibit to Connecticut. The two are co-founders of unloadusa.org, a nonprofit organization that uses and encourages artistic expression to open dialogue about gun culture.
