The latest bizarre proposals, presented under the auspices of the Orwellian-named Subcommittee on Firearms/Ammunition, Best Practices/Protocols and Violence Reduction, are numerous, bureaucratic, unwieldy, terminally politically correct, and frankly, pretty stupid. As far as concerns for gun owners, they boil down to two big showstoppers: They want to '[r]equire that any shell casing for ammunition sold or possessed in Ct. have a serial number laser etched on same for tracing purposes,' and '[t]hat a mental health suitability screening process be developed for anyone seeking a license to sell, purchase or carry any type of firearm in Ct.' |

Police in Oregon have dubbed the upcoming Fourth of July weekend a "No Refusal Weekend." While most Americans associate Independence Day with freedom, it also means that mandatory blood tests for motorists will be required by the Eugene, Springfield and Oregon State police (video below). If drivers refuse to take an alcohol breath test, police will quickly obtain "blood draw warrants." These warrants will allow police to take those who refuse to take a breathalyzer to a jail, medical facility or mobile bus, where a medic can perform a blood test, notes KEZI. |

As part of the American Civil Liberties Unions recent report on police militarization, the Massachusetts chapter of the organization sent open records requests to SWAT teams across that state. It received an interesting response. As it turns out, a number of SWAT teams in the Bay State are operated by what are called law enforcement councils, or LECs. These LECs are funded by several police agencies in a given geographic area and overseen by an executive board, which is usually made up of police chiefs from member police departments. ... Some of these LECs have also apparently incorporated as 501(c)(3) organizations. And its here that we run into problems. |

A U.S. District Court judge ruled on Thursday that a trio of gun control laws passed last year by the Colorado Legislature does not infringe on 2nd Amendment rights although the way she phrased her ruling makes it sound as though shes anticipating a bitter public reaction.
Marcia Krieger, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, predicated the basis for her ruling on precedent laid down by other courts most notably the U.S. Supreme Courts 2008 ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, which relied on an innovative interpretation of the well-regulated militia qualifier contained in the 2nd Amendment. |

NBC should be held liable for the editing of George Zimmermans 911 call in ways that made Zimmerman appear to be a racist.
In a grotesque and apparently malicious act of misreporting, NBC, in multiple broadcasts, aired doctored, heavily edited versions of the 911 call, misleadingly moving around Zimmermans words like a Rubiks Cube. The result gave a false impression of the tragic incident in which Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, and it exposed Zimmerman to the hatred, scorn and contempt of millions of viewers. |

Los Angeles is looking to follow in the footsteps of two Northern California cities that enacted gun bans on possessing large-capacity ammunition clips that have stood up to Second Amendment challenges so far.
The Los Angeles City Attorneys Office revised a proposed ordinance to mirror large-capacity magazine bans in San Francisco and Sunnyvale that have withstood Second Amendment challenges in two Northern California District courts, Deputy City Attorney Brian Sottile said. |

Beginning in September, Google plans to block firearm, ammunition, and gun accessory ads.
According to Google Support's "Dangerous Products or Services" page, the company "[wants] to keep people safe both online and offline, so [they] won't allow the promotion of some products or services that cause damage, harm, or injury."
Included in the dangerous products for which ads will be blocked are "Guns & Parts." This covers "functional devices that appear to discharge a projectile at high velocity, whether for sport, self-defense, or combat." |

Amendment 5 would add ammunition and gun accessories to constitutionally protected status. It would make these new rights unalienable, and require the courts to apply strict scrutiny to any challenges to gun laws. This last part is hugely significant, as it could lead to existing prohibitions against dangerous felons from possessing guns to be tossed out. A judge in Louisiana, which recently passed a similar amendment, already made such a ruling.
Ed.: Except that Amendment 5 *specifically* notes it doesn't apply to violent felons. |

One restaurant in Rifle, Colorado is living up to its name: customers are invited to bring their guns to Shooters Grill, reports the Post Independent.
We encourage it, and the customers love that they can come here and express their rights, Lauren Boebert told the paper. This country was founded on our freedom. People can come in carrying their gun, and they can pray over their food.
Even the staff is armed, with waitresses taking orders while carrying handguns in holsters strapped to their legs. |

Floridas just-signed warning shot law unlikely to help Marissa Alexander
I neglected, however, to point out one particular facet of Floridas new law that could potentiallynot reasonably, but potentiallyprovide some benefit to Alexander. So, Ill cover that here. |

U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger has ruled that Colorado's controversial gun laws don't violate the constitution in a judgement Dave Kopel, who assembled a lawsuit endorsed by assorted businesses and dozens of Colorado sheriffs, has already pledged to appeal.
In May 2013, shortly after the suit was filed, Kopel detailed his arguments for Westword. Here's a look at why he believes the state's ban of all magazines that can hold more than fifteen rounds and a requirement for universal background checks on gun purchases are unconstitutional, as well as Krieger's reasons for deciding otherwise, supplemented by photos, two videos and three original documents, including the just-issued ruling. |

Last weekend, Gov. Jindal said he could sense right now a rebellion brewing amongst these United States where people are ready for a hostile takeover of Washington, D.C., to preserve the American dream for our children and grandchildren. |

Kreiger found that Heller shows that though a citizen has the right to keep a gun for self-defense, the Second Amendment does not guarantee the right to choose the type of gun they use for self-defense.
In the context of this case, Kreiger applied Heller by stating that the law banning high-capacity magazines does not take away a person's right of self-defense with a gun, it merely limits what kind of gun one can have or what size magazine one can use with certain types of guns. |

Georgia school leaders are turning down a new option to arm teachers, arguing that it doesn't make kids any safer and creates more problems than state lawmakers intended to solve.
A string of attacks at schools and colleges in California, Oregon and Washington state hasn't swayed education officials who say bluntly that they don't believe guns belong in schools.
"We could give (teachers) all the training in the world as to how to a shoot a gun, but knowing when to shoot poses a major problem," said Steve Smith, superintendent of the Bibb County School District. "The folks we work with day in and day out don't have that." |

For nearly three years, federally-licensed firearms dealers (FFLs) in southern border states have been badgered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to report sales of two or more rifles to the same person during any consecutive five-day period. Purporting to need this information to stop arms trafficking in and out of Mexico, ATF issued so-called demand letters to require indefinite reporting of multiple rifle sales by thousands of dealers, treating the independent FFL businessmen as though they were government employees. |

Confused about the two state initiatives coming in the Nov. 4 election about gun control and gun rights? Check out our editorial board interviews with supporters and opponents of Initiative 591 and Initiative 594. TVW produced video of the interviews.
Initiative 591 would prevent Washington state from background checks for gun buyers that are stricter than the national standard. Here is the text of Initiative 591. Supporters of I-591 want to eliminate potential laws that would make it harder to buy a gun.
Initiative 594 would require background checks for buyers at gun shows and some private transfers. Here is the text of Initiative 594. Supporters of 594 want to make it harder to buy a gun in Washington state. |

More than half of Seattles criminal homicides last year did not involve firearms, yet Seattle Mayor Ed Murrays focus, including his remarks last night to a community meeting in the South End, has been on gun control, and one wonders if he has taken a page from Michael Bloombergs Everytown for Gun Safety playbook to exaggerate the citys violent crime problem by misleading his constituents and misrepresenting history.
To anyone familiar with crime in Seattle and other similar-sized cities, it might appear so. Yet statistics indicate that suggestions of Seattle being caught in an epidemic of violence as the mayor implied Wednesday, do not pass the smell test. |

Under state law, Veasey and other legally resident noncitizens can carry a concealed firearm only on their own property, and are not allowed to obtain a concealed carry permit, the complaint states.
Veasey apparently asked anyway but the Granville County Sheriff's Office confirmed in October 2012 that she was ineligible for a concealed carry permit.
"She was told not to bother applying because her application would be denied on the basis of citizenship and the money for the application fee would be wasted," according to the complaint.
Veasey and the co-plaintiff Second Amendment Foundation, of which she is a member, say the North Carolina law violates the Constitution. |
