Our news media creates the false impression that gun owners in the United States are dangerous. Those media inconsistencies are easy to find. Were told that a gun is completely ineffective to affect government behavior, and yet the same gun is much too dangerous to be left in the hands of honest civilians. It seems the media, and some government officials, wants it both ways.

Second Amendment supporters are rightly frustrated by the failure of lower courts to properly interpret the landmark Heller decision from 2008. However, a comment by United States District Judge Roger Benitez in his ruling on Miller v. Bonta could be a massive game-changer. In that ruling, covered on Ammoland, Benitez took note of the Supreme Courts ruling in Caetano v. Massachusetts.

Faced with polls showing that support for stricter gun control is lower than it has been in years and a Congress that has, thus far, rejected the more radical among his ideas, President Joe Biden (D) has decided to fall back on lies. During a speech in which he announced a slew of executive orders, Biden ran through a veritable Greatest Hits of misleading gun-control talking points. He said that nothing Im about to recommend in any way impinges on the Second Amendment. This is false.

Lawmakers are ready to wrap-up their regular legislative session, and all indications point to a swift plan to slide a few anti-gun bills through at the last minute. Under the cover of the COVID lock-down, business as usual has proceeded in Providence, albeit with the public shut out of the Statehouse for an entire year. Having become accustomed to no public presence in the building, anti-gun politicians have continued their stealth ways by posting bills in the House Judiciary Committee late Friday night so they can quickly be dispensed with on Monday.

A federal appeals court said Friday it would rehear a dispute over a Trump administration ban on bump stocks, a device that allows semiautomatic firearms to fire rapidly.

The decision comes three months after a three-judge panel at the court said a federal judge in Kalamazoo, Michigan, should have blocked the ban.
In this Oct. 4, 2017, file photo, a device called a "bump stock" is attached to a semi-automatic rifle at the Gun Vault store and shooting range in South Jordan, Utah.

Cases at federal appellate courts are heard by three-judge panels, but a losing side can ask the full court to reconsider a decision. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Ohio, agreed to a request from the U.S. Justice Department.

President Joe Bidens senior adviser Cedric Richmond blamed a nationwide crime surge on guns on Sunday and insisted Republicans defunded the police earlier in the year. His comments follow an announcement from the Justice Department that it is implementing "cross-jurisdictional firearms trafficking strike forces" in five U.S. cities to track and stop the illegal transfer of firearms amid unprecedented spikes in crime. When asked what is behind the rise in violence, Richmond insisted firearms, including so-called assault weapons, were the culprit.

A group of Republican U.S. Senators last week called on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to withdraw its proposed rule largely banning the use of stabilizing braces on pistols. Every current GOP senator in Congress, except for Rob Portman of Ohio and Susan Collins of Maine, signed the letter, dated June 24, addressed to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, and acting ATF Director Marvin Richardson. The letter argues the proposed rulemaking, which would reclassify most of the braced pistols in their current format as short barreled rifles under the National Firearms Act of 1934, is bordering on oppression.

When Winchester debuted the Model 1873 rifle, its purpose was to provide a more stable platform capable of handling more powerful cartridges than the .44 Henry Flat. That cartridge, introduced in 1860 in the Henry rifle, featured a 216-gr., internally lubricated, lead bullet propelled by more than 25 grains of black powder at around 1,125 f.p.s. from a 24" barrel. Its biggest claim to fame was its 15-shot tubular magazine.

Research Armament Industries (RAI), an American company, was the first to introduce the concept of a long-range sniper cartridge in .338 caliber in 1983. The idea was to develop a cartridge for the U.S. Navy that was capable of extreme long-range shots against persons and material. The company Nammo Lapua Oy, commonly known as Lapua, joined the project to manufacture the casings for the ammo testing process. RAI withdrew from the program during the testing process, so Lapua started producing the whole cartridge on their own.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The supposed quietude of a good mans allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside...Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them... Thomas Paine, I Writings of Thomas Paine at 56 (1894).
