"Long before the towers fell in New York, the safety terrorists have been striking at the heart of self-governance and individual responsibility. Victims of the safety terrorists support a large portion of this gluttonous entity we call government at all levels, along with an equally large portion of the legal profession in our society. Victims of the safety terrorists have paid fines and served time in jails and prisons all over the United States, unjustly, unconstitutionally and irreparably." |

"1.) Guns are used in self-defense over 2 million times a year. However, this makes the attempted crime a 'non-event,' which necessarily complicates the Police investigation. Without civilian ownership of guns, these Police investigations would not have been compromised. Civilians should leave crime prevention to the Police, who are properly equipped to investigate following the crime's completion." |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
Your editorial ("Feeling Lucky, Perp?" May 29) decried New York gun laws and said that citizens who defended themselves should be let off. I disagree.
In 34 states (with concealed weapon permit "must issue" laws) it is becoming very difficult for robbers and muggers to make a living. By maintaining a large group of unarmed victims in New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey they have an alternative. From Jacksonville, Fla., they just travel I-95 to the "happy hunting grounds" of helpless targets and easy pickings. In Florida, three out of every 1,000 possible victims is armed, and the robber doesn't know which three.
So, I certainly hope New York doesn't change its gun laws. We need some alternative for the criminal element that flees Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, etc. |

"Now come the terrorists to plague us. Not the terrorists themselves, but the politicians who have seized upon the terrorism to con us into allowing them to make onerous laws to further erode our constitutional rights in the name of 'fighting terrorism.' That gets them a lot more mileage than the 'drug war,' if less money to steal (locally, although they steal a lot of it internationally)." |

Homicide detectives had no suspects but said the shooting might be gang-related. [emphasis added]

He came upon a police detail at Art Museum Drive, near North Charles. He says that for a few days, police had been set up in this area to stop and ticket citizens driving without their seat belts fastened. Bergman doesn't think this is a good use of police power, especially for several days at a time, and especially in light of the city's more serious crime problems, and particularly because he pays extra, as a Charles Village resident, for security patrols in his neighborhood." ...

An off-duty Monroe, Conn., police officer was injured after his gun accidentally discharged outside a toy store off Route 6 in Danbury.
Thomas Mckirdy, 49, of Newtown, Conn., was released from Danbury Hospital after being treated for a superficial gunshot wound to his buttocks. The gun went off Sunday while Mckirdy was adjusting it in his car, police said. Apparently not realizing he'd been shot, he drove home and then called an ambulance after 2 p.m., police said. Monroe police Sgt. Mark Caufield said the shooting was accidental and no one else was injured.
Both the Danbury and Monroe police departments were investigating. |

"Choices are in fact the only metric we can use to measure freedom. Without choices precious freedom ceases to exist. Therefore, the amount of freedom any individual possesses is effected proportionately by the number of choices that person has when contemplating a course of action. In simpler terms, you are only as free as the number of alternatives available to you when it comes time to make a decision. If you only have one choice about something, as in paying taxes, then obviously your freedom is greatly reduced when you consider your personal budget and finances. Conversely, you know you have greater freedom when numerous choices are at your disposal. It is a shame you have more freedom when choosing a restaurant than you do in how your money is taken from you and spent." |

A security guard who stopped to help two teenage girls fix a flat tire on a freeway in City Heights Sunday discovered his gun missing when he returned to his truck, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.
At about 3:30 p.m., Eric Carraso stopped his truck behind a disabled Cadillac at the University Avenue onramp on southbound Interstate 15, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.
Carraso let the two girls, believed to be 16 and 17 years old, sit in his Sterling Security truck while he changed a flat tire on the Cadillac, Bettencourt said.
It was not until after the girls drove away that Carraso realized his Ruger 9mm weapon was missing from the truck, said Bettencourt.
The teens were being sought in connection with the apparent theft. |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
Thanks to the story on lawyer David Gross ("New gun law is about freedom, lawyer says," May 31) I now realize that antigun folk have little to be afraid of compared with the extraordinary paranoia Gross and some of his gun-clutching soulmates feel every day of their lives.
Gross fears bears of his childhood terrorizing his campgrounds. He fears neighbors "bothering" his wife. He fears neo-Nazis attacking his synagogue, where he sits in the back -- ready to gun them down. He fears questions from the reporter about his fearfulness and responds with screams and shouts death threats at imagined intruders into his house.
Poor guy. Extreme fear runs his life. And poor Minnesota. Yes, antigun people do have something to fear: the paranoia of gun owners.
------- Less than one percent of all guns owned are used in crimes, and the anti-gunners want the rest of us to be defenseless. Who's paranoid? |

"Law enforcement officers bring street credibility to the issue of gun control and gun safety that advocates who've never fired or faced a weapon can only dream of. That's not to say that police officers speak with one voice on the issue; they don't. But when they do take a stand on guns, it's hard to ignore their common sense, gained from real-life experience."
"That's why it was so heartening to learn recently that the Clark County Sheriff's Office has put into place a new policy on safe storage of guns. This policy speaks volumes. Critics will say it was long overdue, but Sheriff Garry Lucas deserves credit. He faced up to a terrible problem, faced down those who hoped he'd ignore it -- and showed leadership on the gun-safety issue to the wider world, in the bargain." |

"Conservative activist and National Rifle Association board member Grover Norquist was flummoxed. According to a front page New York Times story, Norquist remarked: 'This is a president who has been so good on the Second Amendment that it's just unbelievable to gun owners that he would really sign the ban.' "
"Norquist apparently shares the NRA's longstanding but controversial view that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to possess nearly all manner of firearms for personal use. And those who, like Norquist, take inspiration from the Second Amendment are right to be concerned about the policies of the Bush Administration. However, they misdirect their ire at the assault weapons ban."
"The real danger comes from Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's efforts to build a military that is largely disconnected from the ordinary citizenry. For whether or not the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess firearms, there is little doubt that its main original purpose was to counter the rise of just such a 'standing army' --armed forces that would operate largely on their own, independent of the American public's will." |
