IA: Local Lawmen Get High Powered Help

... "A new semi automatic AR-15 rifle will now be riding in patrol cars. This rifle is similar in firepower to the M-16, which is the main assault rifle in our military. Police can now hit targets up to 500 yards away. They say the extra reach, firepower and accuracy will help them keep up with street weapons."

" 'Most farmers out there have rifles themselves so it does add something to us and gives us confidence to be able to handle a situation if it ever came up,' says Deputy Sheriff, Troy McClimon."

"Deputy Sheriff, Robert Gonzales says the new weapon gives them an even chance with criminals with high caliber weapons. 'It's just something for our added safety and something to help us deal with our job better,' he says." ...

KABA NOTE:
Iowa is not a "shall issue" state, and getting a permit in some areas of the state is difficult -- if you're a lowly citizen. Meanwhile, these law enforcement officers use farmers' rifles to justify arming with what anti-gunners call "assault weapons".

"A judge in Tacoma, Washington ruled Friday that a lawsuit brought by nine families of the Washington, D.C.-area sniper attacks against the gun dealer and manufacturer that supplied the assault rifle used in the shootings should proceed toward trial. The court rebuffed arguments by Tacoma gun dealer Bull's Eye Shooter Supply and assault rifle manufacturer Bushmaster Firearms that they are immune from responsibility for supplying guns to criminals."

QUESTION:

Would this same judge allow automobile manufacturers to be sued for the criminal misuse of their legal products? If not, what shall we call this decision?

Or maybe you have a great interest in the matter and are still confused about what the heck state lawmakers are doing. If you are, don't worry, because most people in Columbus are confused too.

With that in mind, here's an effort to clear up the muddy situation:

1. How long have state lawmakers been trying to pass a gun bill?

Since 1996. It gets reintroduced with each new General Assembly.

2. Why can't lawmakers get it passed?

Well, it's certainly not for a lack of support.

Eventually, it will be completely legal to carry a concealed handgun in the state of Ohio.

With the Republican governor and Republican-controlled Senate on one side of the debate, and the Republican-controlled House on the other, a concealed-carry bill of some sort seems inevitable. The only question remaining is just how restrictive the law will be.

So where do liberals fit into the debate? Perhaps they should start by giving up their opposition and learning to embrace the gun.
