A North Fort Myers woman says her son shot and killed her tenant and longtime friend in an act of self-defense Thursday night.
Lee County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the incident and have only confirmed that Jerry Helton, 56, was the victim of a homicide.
Diane Cornelison said her son shot Helton, who was his neighbor, when Helton attacked him with gloves and a serrated knife in his Payne Lane home just before 8 p.m. |

Second Amendment advocates may rejoice Sunday, and even carry a concealed weapon into church, when new laws take effect, expanding concealed weapon and self-defense rights.
On July 1, a host of new state laws kick in. That includes the so-called stand your ground law, which allows anyone to use reasonable defensive force without retreating to protect themselves or others against real or perceived threats. If a person believes he or she is in danger, that person can injure or even kill with immunity. |

IP 43 would ban the sale of select semiautomatic guns and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
But it will no longer be on the November ballot since Oregons Supreme Court recently ordered a change to the word assault weapons in the title.
Now theyve simply run out of time.
This has gone back and forth and challenged by the NRA every time, Reverend Knutson said.
A similar initiative that wont hit the ballot until 2020 is Initiative 44.
That would require gun owners to use safety devices when storing guns and report lost or stolen firearms within 24 hours. |

A local group that was founded earlier this year is working to stop the distribution and use of illegal guns, and they have the mayors support.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a national organization that was founded after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012.
In March of this year, a local branch of the group was founded in St. Joseph.
Leader Emily Weese said when she heard there was an opportunity to expand Moms Demand Action to her home city, she jumped on the opportunity. |

The floodgates have burst on attack ads in Tennessee's Republican gubernatorial primary.
New TV ads keep hitting the airwaves after U.S. Rep. Diane Black's commercial this week that labeled former state economic development chief Randy Boyd and businessman Bill Lee as moderates. All four leading Republican contenders have touted their conservative credentials throughout the campaign, and now Black and Boyd are trying to pick each other's claims apart. |

Chief Justice John Roberts is the Supreme Court's new man in the middle. It's just that the middle may have moved well to the right.
The retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy means Roberts probably will be the conservative justice closest to the court's four liberals, allowing him to control where it comes down in some of its most contentious cases.
Roberts will be the justice who determines "how far they go and how fast they go," said Washington lawyer John Elwood.
Kennedy played a similar role for many years - his votes on gay rights, abortion, the death penalty, the environment, voting rights and affirmative action basically determined the outcome of cases on which the court was divided between liberals and conservatives. |

Gun rights
The court has been reluctant to take gun rights cases in recent years, repeatedly turning away challenges to gun restrictions. In 2008 and 2010 the court voted 5-4, with Kennedy in the majority both times, in saying people have a right to have guns in their own homes, striking down handgun ownership bans in the District of Columbia and Chicago. But the court left open how broadly the Second Amendment may protect gun rights in other settings. The court hasnt taken a major gun rights case since 2010, even though Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch have all signaled interest. |

Fired FBI Director James Comeys self-aggrandizement tour continued apace this week. Momentarily turning his attention from attacking President Trump, Comey used the occasion of a trip to the largely-disarmed United Kingdom as an opportunity to advocate for stricter U.S. gun laws and to level barbs at NRA.
In an interview with the UKs iNews published Tuesday, Comey appeared to express his support for ongoing efforts to restrict young adults ages 18-20 from acquiring firearms and for a ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms. Comey told the media outlet, |

The Tazewell County Board opposes state attempts at firearms restrictions that might conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
The board apparently doesnt support making its county a safe harbor for prohibited weapons, nor encouraging public officials to flout the law.
A pro-gun resolution the board approved earlier this week eliminated wording some members found problematic. The renewed resolution was approved almost unanimously. Only board member Sue Sundell opposed it. |

Reason No. 1: It doesnt fit the gun control narrative.
This shooting cant be blamed on lax gun laws. Maryland has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, earning it an A- rating from the Giffords Law Centerone of only six states to earn above a B+ score. It has enacted almost all of the gun control measures commonly proposed by gun control advocates.
And yet, despite this, not only did this incident occur, but Baltimore is one of the worst cities in the U.S. for gun-related violence, and was recently named by USA Today as the nations most dangerous city. In the last sixth months, 120 Baltimore residents have been murdered with firearms21 in the last 30 days. Maryland itself does not fit the gun control narrative. |

There is no way of knowing if the events in Annapolis would have played out differently, but the new law, an extreme risk protective order law, allows relatives and law enforcement officials to ask a court to temporarily restrict a persons access to guns if they are found to be a risk to themselves or others. The law will go into effect in October. Given the facts of this case, I think there was a strong possibility that law enforcement would have been able to obtain an extreme risk protection order against this person and therefore the persons guns might have been removed or he wouldnt have been able to buy this gun, said Lindsay Nichols, the federal policy director at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence... |

An initiative aimed at prohibiting enforcement of laws that restrict gun possession in Grant County will not appear on the November ballot after Grant County Circuit Court Judge William D. Cramer Jr. determined it was preempted by state law.
In a June 29 decision, Cramer said the proposed ordinance would have violated a state statute prohibiting counties from regulating firearms, components and ammunition, and the initiative would have confused voters about limitations to county authority. |

On Wednesday, Associate U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced that he is retiring effective July 31. The move signals the end of Kennedys 30-year career on the nations highest court, which bore witness to its most important decisions concerning the Second Amendment. It also creates the opportunity for President Trump to appoint a replacement who will help reinvigorate the stalled progress in Second Amendment jurisprudence.
Gun rights supporters will remember Kennedy for his vote recognizing the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms in the landmark 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller ruling. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888). |
