"I was dismayed to read the recent story in 'The Tribune' about you, your son, and your tabulation of old newspaper stories, presented as a scientific study of guns used in self defense in America.
"...I'm sorry to inform you that you have merely tracked the story selection choices of the newspaper, not the use of firearms in American life. The story reflects an unfortunate and embarrassing lack of judgment."
"Although you declared in the story that the work was scientific, it is clearly anything but that. The concept is flawed, the sample unrepresentative, and the published conclusion is literally preposterous. It is a glaring instance of what is meant by the term, 'junk science.' " |

Opponents of a new gun law in Minnesota are presenting their case to overturn it in court.
Ramsey County District Judge John Finley heard a motion to overturn the so-called Conceal and Carry Law Thursday in St. Paul.
Thirty-three religious groups and churches from around the Twin cities Want the gun law declared unconstitutional. They say the law was attached to a bill that included more than one subject.
The state wants the case dismissed.
The law, which was passed last year, changed the rules for getting a permit to carry a gun in public. Since then, more permits have been issued. |

Police arrested a Russian woman on arms trafficking charges after she was found in possession of 38 pen guns, officials said on Thursday.
The tiny weapons, which look like fountain pens, are used by gangs as a weapon of self-defence when they attend meetings with other groups, said Ester Aren, a police spokesperson.
"You see these kind of things a lot in the movies, but it's true," Aren said.
Police arrested the 27-year-old woman on Tuesday. They did not give her name, but said she was part of a Russian and Kosovar weapons-running ring.
Police also seized 99 ammunition cartridges designed for use with the pen guns.

"A priest, a doctor and a reservist policeman are behind bars after a shooting incident in Eldorado Park, in the south of the city, police said on Wednesday."
"Police spokesperson Mbazima Shiburi said a 42-year-old reservist captain was arrested for allegedly shooting a woman dead with his service pistol on May 22 at 11pm."
"Shiburi said the policeman did not report the death but instead made an arrangement with the priest, who was also a funeral undertaker, to remove the body."
"To obtain a death certificate from the home affairs department, a doctor was asked to declare the woman's death to be from 'natural causes'."

------- "The bullet that struck an actress on Tuesday afternoon as she sipped a soda on a northbound W train came within a centimeter of hitting a major blood vessel and possibly killing her, a surgeon who treated her said yesterday."
"The surgeon, Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, told reporters at Bellevue Hospital Center that the woman, Monica E. Meadows, 23, who is also a model, suffered nerve damage from the bullet, which entered her left upper chest and exited through her left shoulder without fracturing bones or striking major blood vessels. Dr. Miglietta said Ms. Meadows 'seems incredibly strong' and could be released within a day or two. A hospital spokesman said she was listed in good condition." |
