"Prime-time television shows are following suit. For instance, a recent episode of Judging Amy addressed a father losing custody of his children because of his careless gun-storage practices."

A judge on Monday agreed to release a woman whose arrest last week prompted her children to hunker down in their home for five days, but the woman's attorney said she refused to leave jail under the judge's terms.
McGuckin's lawyer, Bryce Powell, told the judge his client would not accept the conditions. "My client demands dismissal of the charges and child protection proceedings and an apology," Powell said. |

The Violence Policy Center (VPC.org) is scheduled to file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Washington against Attorney General Ashcroft. The suit will contend that the delay in implementing the Clinton administration regulation involving background checks of handgun buyers is a violation of federal law.

Handgun Licensing SB52 by state Sen. Jack Scott (D-Glendale) was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill would require handgun purchasers to first obtain a license by passing written, safe handling and basic shooting proficiency tests. The bill would also require purchasers to submit thumbprints with local law enforcement agencies, making it harder for criminals to falsify identification.
SB52 is scheduled to be heard on the Senate Floor next week. |

~The infamous Dr. Kellerman strikes again! However, this time the description of his study makes it seem somewhat more credible than his previous work.
To break it down:
75% of the studied children found the gun in the room.
56% handled it.
Between 14% and 28% pulled the trigger (not clear from article).
However, he fails to mention whether the children who handled the gun or pulled the trigger came from gun-owning or gun-free households.
This makes the AAP's "no-gun" recommendation premature. |
