Legislation that would require “micro stamping” of cartridges from semi-automatic weapons (which typically eject their spent cartridges after firing) hasegendered[sic] virulent criticisms from the usual suspects.
Their basic argument is the same they have used for decades. They posit a brilliant criminal who will think of ways to evade the laws, leaving only us dumb honest people to get entangled in a “legal web”, unconstitutional bureaucracy and so on. |

Gun owners who fail to report their lost or stolen firearms to police within 72 hours could face penalties ranging from an infraction to a felony, under a bill debated in the House of Representatives Monday night.
The debate marked the continuation of a three-year effort to stem the tide of stolen guns used in crimes in Connecticut by making gun owners criminally accountable for their firearms.
...
Under the bill, a first-time failure to report a lost or stolen gun within 72 hours is an infraction, punishable by a fine up to $90. Any subsequent unintentional failure to report a lost or stolen gun is a Class D felony, subject to a fine of up to $5,000, up to five years in prison, or both. |

...there are credible accusations that China is not only harassing and imprisoning practitioners of the Falun Gong branch of Buddhism but murdering them and then harvesting their corneas, kidneys and other organs for sale to those needing transplants.
I know it sounds too horrible to be true, and maybe it isn't true. But the past century taught us that nothing is too horrible to be true.
Ed.: Yet another example of the hideous things that may happen when people aren't permitted the means of effective self-defense. |

A man suspected in the shooting death of a Fontana resident on Saturday morning has not been arrested because his actions might be classified as self-defense, sheriff's deputies said.
Shots were fired from a Honda Accord about 6 a.m. into a residence on Stafford Street in what deputies said appears to be a gang-related drive-by shooting.
A man returned fire and hit the Accord's driver, Johnny Maldonado, 26, who was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot to the upper body. |

The concerns about accidental shootings, and someone stealing the gun, are rather silly I think. We’re all allowed to own cars, after all, so what happens if we accidentally crash into someone else and hit them? What happens if someone steals our car and uses it to rob a bank or run someone over?
Those are things that can happen, but they’re risks we accept for the convenience of having cars available to us. Are these same risks not acceptable when it comes to carrying a gun for personal protection and as a crime deterrent? |

On Friday the CPS confirmed that Hugh Grant will not face charges over claims that he kicked photographer Ian Whittaker and attacked him with a container of baked beans in west London on 24 April.
...
The CPS spokeswoman added that 'self-defence', for example, can be used as a legitimate form of defence should the case go to court.
...
The CPS statement added: 'In relation to a second allegation involving a discarded take away food container, the CPS decided that a prosecution would not be in the public interest...lack of premeditation on the part of Mr Grant and the overall circumstances of the incident.'
Ed.: Thankfully, the Brits are still allowed to use empty fast-food containers for self-defense. |

At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl record store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black "US Out of Vt.!" T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.
But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States -- peacefully, of course.
Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.
They've published a "Green Mountain Manifesto" subtitled "Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union." |

Few American families that keep firearms in their homes store them safely, a pediatric researcher says. Nearly 200 million guns are privately owned in the United States, and more than one third of all American homes report keeping at least one gun in the house, according to previous studies. Researchers surveyed more than 3,500 parents in pediatric offices across the United States and Canada. A total of 23 percent of the families surveyed reported owning firearms, and close to one third of them reported safe storage practices. |

In New York, Michael R. Bloomberg is known as the billionaire media mogul who became mayor. A conservative publication in Florida, NewsMax, asserts: "Bloomberg's hatred of guns has twisted roots." And on the Web site of The Wichita Eagle, one writer wonders why a New York mayor is telling the people of Kansas what to do. In towns large and small across the country, Mr. Bloomberg, a Republican, has emerged as the face of gun control in America. |

Would-be Westchester pistol packers could apply directly to a judge for handgun permits under a plan being considered by the 9th Judicial District to establish a special pistol-licensing court in the county. Administrative Judge Francis Nicolai said a court devoted to pistol permits would provide consistency in reviewing and deciding pistol applications and streamline the often-lengthy process. "It's something I'm evaluating," Nicolai said. "We'd need to determine what it would take administratively and what judicial resources would be required. I'll be meeting with the judges to discuss it and if county officials have an interest in meeting with me about it, I'd be more than willing to do so.' |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
