All-American handsome and a strapping 6'3', Colin Goddard seems an unlikely poster child for gun control. Indeed, Goddard, 26, never thought much about the gun issue as a Virginia Tech student majoring in physics and drilling with the ROTC cadet corps. Getting shot four times during the 2007 Virginia Tech rampage changed all that. |

Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, filled the early morning air on Saturday at the new Porterville Police Departments Shooting Range.
Community members, the National Guard, the PPD and others came to practice and compete in the PPDs first annual pistol competition.
According to Police Chief Chuck McMillan, pistols were picked as a weapon of choice because of their versatility.
The pistol shoot competition is more of a skill. With a pistol its going to require the shooter to administer his skills, more than with a rifle, said McMillan. |

It is my hope that some moderate Republicans, some Independents and some Democrats will read this compilation of what has been happening in the NH Legislation via very conservative Republicans during 2011 and 2012. There was the bill that would expand a person's right to use deadly force in self-defense without first attempting to retreat. Governor Lynch vetoed the bill and the NH Association of Chiefs of Police and the NH Sheriff's Association came out against the bill as a threat to public safety. |

In their latest decision of the case, the majority applauded Alameda County's "current, official interpretation of its ordinance," which allows the Nordykes to have their gun show at the county fairgrounds, provided the firearms are secured while not being handled by potential customers. "With that interpretation in mind, plaintiffs cannot state a viable Second Amendment claim," according to the lead opinion authored by Judge Susan Graber. |

Louisiana residents will vote on what Gov. Bobby Jindal calls "our own Second Amendment" when they go to the polls on Nov. 6.
On May 29, the Louisiana State House approved Sen. Neil Riser's SB 303 in a 77-22 vote. The proposal calls for an amendment to the State Constitution that eliminates wording that gives local governments the right to restrict concealed carry of firearms. |

The Mexican ambassador to the US, Arturo Sarukhan, dismissed claims that Mexico is secretly plotting against the Second Amendment. Or, to be more accurate, he called the whole idea gobbledygook, which is both Espaol and English for such a load of bull. Though, using this highly technical and official term to describe the problem has done nothing to solve the debate. If anything, its just fueled the fire. |

Every time police Sergeant Joseph Hubbard stops a speeder or serves a search warrant, he says he worries suspects assume they can open fire -- without breaking the law.
Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the police department in Jeffersonville, Indiana, says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the unlawful intrusion by a public servant to protect themselves and others, or their property. |

With many independent voters still undecided in the presidential election, May 30th was as good a time as any for Media Matters and the Violence Policy Center to try to push those independents toward the groups own fringe territory.
They did so with the end justifies the means attitude thats typical of how they and their political allies pursue their goals. Media Matters is a George Soros-funded propaganda operation that describes itself as a progressive research and information center dedicated to . . . correcting conservative misinformation. |

Yuma Countys transfer of Adair Shooting Range to the Arizona Game and Fish commission sends up a red flag to me.
What interest would a state with a estimated $2 billion budget deficit have in trying to buy up to 10 gun ranges throughout the state, especially gun ranges that are having no financial problems to begin with.
In fact, Adair had just received a $24,400 grant from the Friends of the National Rifle Association for expansion of its programs. One of the reasons posted for the turn over was because the Game and Fish Commission could apply for grants that would improve the ranges. ( I see no change there, do you?) |

Unless the NRA stands its ground and shoots me.
Probable cause would be my nagging question: Are the words "control" and "regulate" the same as "ban" and "outlaw"? |

Twenty-one states have some form of stand-your ground laws. In an analysis of homicides from 2005 to 2009, John Roman of the Justice Policy Center at the Urban Institute, found that homicides were twice as likely to be ruled justifiable in stand-your-ground states.
Advocates of the laws say people have a right to self-defense; but that claim is being challenged in Florida and Arizona, where two deaths could have been avoided if the shooter had chosen an alternative course of just walking away. |

A lot of people are OK with recommending .22 LR firearms for self-defense on the (correct) adage that any gun is better than no gun. In that sense, we don't, and can't disagree. In the same vein, if all you have is a crossbow and beer stein, then scheisse, it's better than nothing. But if you're making an argument for .22 LR based on the numbers, you're working from an incomplete data set. |

The elected official in charge of reviewing Florida's "stand your ground" law says legislators might need to make changes to ensure that the law is applied "fairly and equally.'
Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll made the statement in response to a Tampa Bay Times analysis of nearly 200 "stand your ground' cases that showed widespread confusion and disparities in the way the law is being implemented. |

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office has confirmed witness reports that a suspect who was killed by a Dallas police officer on Saturday was shot in the back.
Police justified the shooting as self-defense, saying 21-year-old John Husband III of Dallas was armed.
The department has not yet provided a detailed account of the incident, which happened Saturday afternoon outside an apartment complex in the 3600 block of Folklore Trail in Oak Cliff.
"He [the officer] shot him in the back," said Xavier Bryant, 22, Husbands friend since childhood. |

Reasonably, someone could have shot Zombie Vitaly in self-defense and avoided prosecution and for good reason. If, a week after a mentally unstable man viciously attacks someone and spreads fear throughout the city, another seemingly deranged guy covered in blood runs at you, it would be perfectly reasonable for you to think it necessary to defend yourself by any means necessary. Far more reasonable than Zimmermans defense.

You've joined Alice in Wonderland when in our major cities, your right to self-defense is abridged. Call 911 and enjoy the time with your assailant. Offer him a drink or a smoke, because the police are only 14.5 minutes away, rather than sending him to the Promised Land with a 4" Smith & Wesson Model 27 stroked with Winchester 158 grain hollow points at 1250 fps. |

A recent Lawrence Journal-World article, "National group seeks repeal of Stand Your Ground law in Kansas," brought about many comments regarding the Second Amendment to the United States' Constitution. There appears to be two prominent, and distinct, interpretations to "Article The Fourth" (aka: Amendment the Second in The Bill of Rights). |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
