MI: The 2nd Amendment meets Black Lives Matter in Howell

About a dozen demonstrators carrying signs in support of Black Lives Matter have gathered outside a historic courthouse in Howell, the Livingston County city still haunted by a racial past.

Fifty feet away, a larger group, about 40 to 50 people, has gathered as well. Many of them are veterans or Second Amendment activists, intending, they say, to protect the city from violence threatened on social media. No one in either group is black, though an African-American man walked past to observe the scene.

Thomas LaMay, 54, belonged to the ladder group. He walked over to demonstrators with a case of bottled water, offering them a drink in the 80 degree heat. They accepted and thanked him.

The criminal justice system is just a system. It has failed people of all races. Amidst the riots across America, people are understandably focused on the problems faced by people of color. While it is obvious that they have faced real problems, lots of other people have felt let down by the system.

That is what I have learned over the years. It has failed people of all races. It often seems that there is not much justice to it.

The Facebook group for the event states that the group does not plan to initiate or condone violence. They will be armed but hope to keep their weapons on safety. They plan to have three person teams at every intersection downtown, and in areas where local businesses could be affected.

In a 4-1 decision, the court ruled Ban Assault Weapons NOWs 75-word ballot summary affirmatively misleads voters by contradicting broader text in the proposed amendment.

Two groups with distinctly different objectives appeared to find common ground Thursday afternoon and joined each other in solidarity out front of the St. John Public Safety building.

Who crossed the driveway leading back to the St. John Firehouse to talk to the other group first wasnt immediately clear. But soon after, men carrying assault rifles walked with the young people wearing face masks chanting for justice and racial equality with ease and apparent solidarity as cars driving by on 93rd Avenue honked and Lake County Sheriffs aerial units circled overhead.

Cardinale said she wants people to know she is pro-Second Amendment after receiving threats of violence because its assumed she is pro-gun control because she is a Democrat.

"The vast, vast majority of (police officers) are patriotic," Massie said. "Some of them are the most pro-Second Amendment people I've ever met, and pro-Constitution."

It might be the Second Amendment to the Constitution, but its first in the hearts of many Americans.

Gun sales in 2020 have skyrocketed compared to 2019, particularly in the months of March, April and May as the U.S. deals with the coronavirus pandemic.

Correlation doesnt equal causation, but experts believe the two are connected.

Firearms unit sales boomed in March 2020 largely due to the COVID-19 health crisis, Jurgen Brauer, chief economist at Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, said in a press release.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962
