"Two children are expected to be OK after separate near-drownings Sunday afternoon.
The first child, a 5-year-old boy, was found unconscious in a swimming pool at 2016 E. Village Green Circle (14830 South) in Draper, said Unified Fire Authority firefighter Ben Sharer. Lifeguards spotted him about 2:45 p.m., pulled him out and performed CPR, he said."

Submitter's note: Wow, I'm just shocked that the reporter didn't call for a ban on pools and didn't try to restart the "debate" on "pool control." I mean, I'm shocked. The reporter MUST know that pools kill more kids than accidents with firearms. No calls for pool licensing either. |

Al Qaeda has released a video urging Muslims who live in the U.S. to take advantage of the easy access to firearms and buy guns to kill Americans.
In the two-hour video released Friday, Adam Gadahn, an American-born spokesman for the terror network, cited America as an example where Muslims in the West have tools at their disposal for a holy war against "the enemies of Islam."
Submitters note: Another reason to get a gun and keep it close at hand. And it confirms the unreasonableness of those states that severely restrict carry permits.
Ed.: Those terrorists are going to be disappointed if they go to gun shows looking for those "fully automatic assault rifles". |

In a new video message released on the internet Friday, American-born al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn calls on Muslims living in America to carry out deadly one-man terrorist acts using fully automatic weapons purchased at gun shows, and to target major institutions and public figures. "What are you waiting for?" asks Gadahn in English, and then adds that jihadis shouldn't worry about getting caught, since so many have been released. "Over these past few years, I've seen the release of many, many Mujahideen whom I had never even dreamed would regain their freedom."

When I travel throughout Upstate New York, I routinely visit businesses some of which had been founded near the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. In Herkimer County, Remington Arms is one of those institutions. Remington is the nations oldest gunmaker and has manufactured its product in Ilion for nearly 200 years. It is the largest U.S. manufacturer of shotguns and rifles the only American company to produce both firearms and ammunition domestically. But legislators in Albany are considering a new law that could jeopardize jobs at Remingtons plant and increase costs on consumers. |

What makes John Moses Brownings Colt 45 the most famous automatic firearm in handgun history? Longevity and adaptability were two reasons gun experts Doug Turnbull and Keith Van Orman suggested this past week during my visit to Turnbulls Manufacturing Co. in Bloomfield, southeast of Rochester. Turnbull, CEO, and Van Orman, company president, have extensive experience in the history and production of this famous firearm. |

On his way home Tuesday from Jim Plain Elementary School in Leander, fourth-grader Marshall May, sitting in the passenger seat of the family minivan, was ticketed for not wearing his seat belt properly. Problem is, Texas law says a person must be at least 15 years old to commit such an offense. If a child isn't properly secured by a seat belt, the adult in the car would be at fault, according to the law. But Marshall's aunt, Ashley Arredondo, 19, who was driving, didn't receive a ticket. ... By Thursday, the story landed on Austin talk radio, and reporters began asking questions.

With the U.S. at war on two fronts in the Middle East, local law enforcement agencies are feeling the squeeze when they go to order ammunition. A decrease in supply has led to rising costs and longer wait times for police departments whose tightening budgets already have forced them to make personnel cutbacks. Experts tell Gannett New Jersey it has yet to become a safety issue.

The other day, out at the gunshop, I was watching a young gal looking over a 9mm pistol for self-defense, checking out different makes & models until she found "just the one" that fit her hands and "felt right."
I couldn't help but to think how popular that cartridge has become, even 109 years AFTER Georg Luger intruduced it in 1902.
The Luger pistol was originally chambered in 7.65, but after constant complaints from the German military that the caliber was too small, it was enlarged to the 9mm we all know today. In fact even today when you buy ammunition for your Glock, Beretta, or whichever model you might happen to have, the cartridges are still stamped "9mm Luger." |

Violent crime has fallen to its lowest level in 40 years. America is a safer place. According to The New York Times, the odds of being murdered or robbed [in the United States] are now less than half of what they were in the early 1990s.
The FBIs Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report for 2010 is based on data collected from more than 13,000 law-enforcement agencies nationwide. The report found a significant 5.5 percent decline in violent crime.
The continued decline in crime seems to fly in the face of accepted theories of criminality. Many legal observers suggested that the recession and high unemployment would usher in higher crime rates that did not happen. |

The use of BB guns and other air-powered weapons will soon be legal on private property throughout Virginia, angering Northern Virginia officials whose constituents live in heavily populated areas. ...
"Pneumatic weapons" - from paintball guns to pellet guns that shoot at 1,000 feet per second -- have long been treated as regular firearms under Fairfax County's code. ...
Under a new state law, however, the county must change its ordinances to allow air guns "on private property if the person shooting has permission of the owner or legal possessor of the property on which the pneumatic gun is being used." Permission is also needed from the owner of the land on which the ammunition is expected to land. |

The story also states that straw purchases of military AK-47s are sold to brokers at $500 a pop, then transported over the border where they are sold at a 300 to 400 percent profit because these guns "cannot be bought legally." It is hard for me to imagine that many Mexicans are going to spend $1,500-$2,000 for semiautomatic AK-47s when automatic versions from Central America are flooding the Mexican market for $50.
When the Times Union wishes to run anti-gun propaganda, please label it as such.

We write in response to Thomas Stierhoff's opinion piece about concealed guns at establishments that sell alcohol. He argues that if law-abiding citizens had guns and could carry them everywhere, we would all be safer and more free. We disagree.
The Second Amendment was written in response to the possibility of a British invasion and a national tyrannical government. These days, the British usually stay in their island and the U.S. government has occasionally set up dictatorships, but only in other countries. |

But one bit of information the police did release is troubling. Detectives confiscated six firearms as part of the process. None of the suspects are over 21 years old, meaning that none of them can legally purchase a handgun.
If the handguns were theirs the question is: How did they get the guns?
Were they stolen?
Did an adult give them to the youths?
Our nation has lax firearms laws which is mostly a good thing. The Second Amendment is important.
However, the laws we have need to be enforced. Our nation prohibits people under age 21 from purchasing or owning a handgun for a good reason. As a group, people under 21 lack the maturity to make wise, safe decisions with handguns. |

The majority of people, then, would not be able to satisfy the criteria for gun ownership and are not able to walk into a sporting goods store, point to a shotgun and say: "I'll have that one."
What the wave of gun-related crime that has swept through the Gold Coast in recent months has made plain, however, is that criminals have absolutely no trouble getting their hands on a firearm.
We have some of the toughest gun ownership laws in the world but the only people they prevent from owning them are those who have no intention of using them to commit crimes. |

To say that someone carrying a gun for protection in Maine is unnecessary is crazy. People have a right to protect themselves in Maine, and have a right to bear arms.
To support a gun-free zone in a neighborhood is like inviting criminals with guns to those homes. That would be plain foolish.
If a criminal walks into a home, the homeowner has a right to protect himself; kill or be killed. |

Our current laws not only preserve the constitutional right to bear arms, but promote the public safety by allowing all citizens to make an informed decision regarding the company they keep or avoid in public, depending on the individual's comfort with handguns.
More to the point, if you're "man enough" to carry a handgun, you ought to be "man enough" to show it, for all our sakes. |

Yesterday, the NYPD held a gun buyback at three locations in the Bronx, offering $200 (for handguns) or $20 (for rifles and shotguns) bank cards in exchange for weapons, and collected hundreds of guns. Including an Uzi submachine gun.
The Post has a field day with that tidbit, with the headline, "Uzi does it at a Bx. gun buyback," and an article that begins, "A gun owner said goodbye to his little friend. An example of Tony Montana's weapon of choice was taken off the streets yesterday when the owner of an Uzi machine gun exchanged it for $200 at a Bronx gun buyback, a source said." Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. offered a positive quote, "Any day that you get an Uzi off the streets of The Bronx is a good day." |

Drivers can get more bang for their buck by turning in unwanted firearms during a local gas station's Gas For Guns event Saturday.
Jim Lind, who operates Jim Lind Shell on Ridgeway Ave., got the idea after reading about a similar promotion in a trade magazine.
"I thought it was a good thing to do for our community, and everybody needs gas," Lind said.
Here's how it works: Starting at 10 a.m. residents bring their weapons to the parking lot south of Waterloo Fire Station No. 1 at the corner of Mulberry and East Third streets. |

Many have been affected in some way by the proliferation of gun violence, and in the spirit of reducing such tragedies, the head of a Connecticut advocacy group recently detailed measures for change and described what he called the politics of gun violence.
Ron Pinciaro, executive director of Connecticut Against Gun Violence, said the 4,500 members of his group are not gun grabbers, as opponents of their work might characterize them, but rather advocates for keeping guns out of the hands of illegal owners and for safeguarding guns in the home. |
