"Everyone with a concealed carry permit would like to believe they're ready should they ever have to use their gun in self-defense. ... Can we set up a system to estimate, all else being equal, just how prepared we might be to defend ourselves should we ever wind up in a gunfight? I think so, and I call the resulting system the Hierarchy of Tactical Shooters. It breaks down into five levels, and from lowest to highest they are as follows."

"Level 1: Shooters Who Don't Shoot" ...

"Level 2: Shooters Who Practice On Standard Ranges" ...

"Level 3: Shooters Who Attend Training Classes" ...

"Level 4: Match Shooters" ...

"Americans spent more than $2 billion on guns and ammunition in 2005, showing the nation's fascination with firearms is not fading despite concerns raised by gun-control advocates."

"The Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation on Monday touted a U.S. Department of Treasury report that said sales of firearms and ammunition increased by 2.6 percent in 2005, while other federal agencies are finding fewer gun-related deaths and crimes. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Centers for Disease Control have not made statistics on gunshot deaths and firearms-related crimes available for 2005, so the NSSF had to rely on data from 2004 and earlier." ...

"July 4 is the quintessential American holiday. It is a boisterous celebration of the birthing of the U.S. and the wonderful independence which has made our great nation the most powerful and influential country this world has ever known."

"This independence could never have come about were it not for firearms. Our forefathers were liberty-hungry upstarts who utilized their skills as marksmen to overthrow an oppressive government. Knowing full well that arming of citizens is necessary for the maintenance of liberty and peace by offering the ability to fend off not only potential invaders but future oppression as well, these great men later put into law that we as Americans have an inalienable right to bear arms." ...

"'For months, we ... were stonewalled, ignored and lied to about the post-Katrina gun confiscations,' Gottlieb said. 'After Riley's statement on Friday, SAF decided that enough was enough. Two weeks ago, we warned the city that we would be watching for this sort of thing. Our letter to the Attorney General stands, because we want Riley, and anybody else who considers gun grabs to be a good idea, to understand that we're simply not kidding around.'" ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The Michigan Senate has approved legislation aimed at fortifying and clarifying self-defense rights.

The measures would allow people to use deadly force -- with no duty to retreat -- if they reasonably think they face imminent death, great bodily harm or sexual assault.

The legislation also would protect people from civil lawsuits if they have used force in self-defense.

The six-bill package is backed by the National Rifle Association but opposed by anti-gun groups.

Critics say the legislation is dangerous and not needed because prosecutors don't charge a person who has justifiably used deadly force to protect themselves.

Supporters say some people have been sued by people who tried to break into their homes.

WASHINGTON -- Less than six months after Mayor Thomas M. Menino joined with New York City's Michael R. Bloomberg to lead a national campaign against illegal guns, Bay State and Empire State lawmakers will introduce a bill in the House to stiffen penalties for gun trafficking.

The Nemorin and Andrews Anti-Gun Trafficking Act , named for two New York police detectives killed in 2003 while investigating gun traffickers, is a reprise of a bill introduced that year by the same cosponsors, Representatives Martin T. Meehan , Democrat of Lowell, and Peter King , Republican of New York. The bill would create federal offenses for gun traffickers and criminals who use firearms that are stolen or have obliterated serial numbers.
