"Guns - specifically assault weapons: We concur generally with President Bush's position in support of a ban on the sale and possession of truly automatic (assault) weapons - e.g., those weapons that fire multiple rounds when the trigger is pulled but once, and keep firing until the trigger is released or the magazine spent." ...
"What everyday citizen among us needs an assault weapon any more than he needs a machine gun, flame-thrower, bazooka, or tank?"

"Robert Strickland was walking toward the Elbow Lounge on the 7300 block of Macknear Field in Detroit at 12:50 a.m. when he was approached by three teens. One brandished a gun and demanded money, said Homicide Inspector Craig Schwartz."
"Strickland, 57, gave the young men $80 and credit cards. One of the teens then fired at Strickland, striking him in the stomach, Schwartz said."
"The teens fled. Strickland opened fire with two handguns he was carrying legally -- a .25-caliber and a 9mm -- Schwartz said. He fired 17 shots, striking the 15-year-old suspect in the back and an 18-year-old suspect in the back of the left leg. The third suspect, Antonio Harris, 18, was killed after being struck in the head, Schwartz said. All three were from Detroit." |

"After years of collecting money from gun taxes, the City Council has decided where to put the funds and how to use them." "The council Monday night established a reserve and separate expense account for anti-violence programs. In addition, the council earmarked $74,000 for anti-violence projects for the next fiscal year. The money had been collected and placed in the city's general fund."
"The reserve was established through Measure H, which was passed by voters in June 1998. Measure H taxes gun dealers in town 3 percent on their gross receipts from concealable handgun and ammunition sales, said Cynthia Battenberg, assistant to the city manager. San Leandro has collected nearly $220,000 from this tax."

"The disguised motivations for drug prohibition and its associated propaganda had now infested their way to the consciousness of most Americans, and those who did not use drugs became afraid that they were a 'scourge' of mankind. Indeed, drug consumption was on the rise, culminating with the indulgent activities of Woodstock, the 'Be-Ins' in San Francisco, music groups like the Grateful Dead, and educators like Timothy Leary who encouraged drug use. The mainstream culture of the U.S. had become exasperated over this issue, wanted something to be done, and was prepared to vote for political candidates who would take action to stem the tide of widespread drug use." |

I can perhaps understand why certain individuals in the military, police or other government or security services might need a weapon for personal protection, but what puzzles me is why a teacher needs a gun. Is it enough just to say I like guns and/or I want one, and you are sold a weapon? Is it not also necessary to demonstrate need?

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
...If a man lies under oath or procures the lie of another under oath, if he perjures himself or suborns perjury, he is guilty under the statute law. Under the higher law, under the great law of morality and righteousness, he is precisely as guilty if, instead of lying in a court, he lies in a newspaper or on the stump; and in all probability, the evil effects of his conduct are infinitely more widespread and more pernicious. Teddy Roosevelt - May 12, 1900 |
