"Saying the Patriot Act has helped prevent further terrorist attacks on America, Attorney General John Ashcroft yesterday called for even tougher law-enforcement tools." ...
"He said the changes made by the Patriot Act in the years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks gave government agencies the ability to share information, but investigators still need additional powers." ...
"Ashcroft argued that law enforcement needs more powers, not fewer. Among those he called for are the power for investigators to subpoena business records in terrorism investigations on their own rather than through a grand jury and a federal death penalty for some terrorism attacks in which people are killed." |

"It's an easy bone for Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin to throw to his coalition partners, but it's a bad idea. While Canada has banned most handgun ownership since 1977, Canadians remain even more likely to hunt and shoot than their American counterparts. The NDP wants none of this: It proposes taking away vaguely defined 'assault weapons' (this likely refers to hunting weapons, since private ownership of machine guns is already illegal in Canada) and lobbying U.S. state and federal governments to take away their own citizens' guns."
"In addition to being awfully arrogant, this plan is ironic, since more crime probably flows from Canada to the U.S. than vice versa: The nation has an overall crime rate half again higher than the United States'. Toronto, once the safest large city in North America, now has more muggings, car thefts, and violent assaults per capita than New York City. ..." |

"At the conference, Jackson chided conservatives for supporting gun rights in America."
" 'They have a blind obsession with the Second Amendment, and the NRA wants to remove the ban on assault weapons/AK 47s and Uzis in September, during a time of national security alert,' Jackson said."
------- Considering gun control's racist roots, Jackson ought to be thankful that there are people in this country still willing to stand up for the right to keep and bear arms. |

"What ever happened to the 'conservative' Supreme Court? ...Apparently, they aren't so conservative, even though the liberal media continues to complain that the court shills for the Republican Party." "In the last few years, the Supreme Court has written sodomy into the Constitution of the United States; affirmed that affirmative action was constitutional, citing a broader need for 'diversity'; refused to rule on whether 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance was constitutional; and ruled that campaign-finance reform laws restricting free speech do not actually restrict free speech."
------- This cowardly court also consistently refused to address the Second Amendment - a pathetic shame for a court where the majority of the justices were appointed by Republicans. |

"Here's why this was so important to me: I don't believe that the authorities in the United States of America are supposed to walk up to you and ask for your papers. I thought that wasn't lawful. Apparently I was wrong, but I thought that that was part of what we were guaranteed under the Constitution. We're supposed to be free men, able to walk freely in our own country - not hampered, not stopped at checkpoints. That's part of what makes this country different from other places. That's what I was taught."
"And it's not just because it's in the Constitution. It's something that you just kind of know. It's kind of obvious. If you haven't committed a crime, you shouldn't be harassed by the police. If they suspect you of something, I don't see why they shouldn't explain it. I wasn't violent. And it was proved later in court that I hadn't committed any crimes." |

"Unless President Bush changes the minds of House Republican leaders, the 10-year-old federal assault weapons ban will die Sept. 13, clearing the way for semiautomatics to enter the country and be sold again."
" 'After September 13th, we will begin to see assault weapons pop up all over the place,' said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who a decade ago successfully sponsored a ban on domestic manufacture and import of the weapons."
"The lapse of the ban will be an issue in this fall's presidential and congressional campaigns, Feinstein said in an interview."

Another view on the recent Supreme Court decision regarding "detainees" in Guantanamo and the US. The article takes the view that the USSC didn't really decide anything, striking a blow against liberty.
------- "...In a 5-4 decision, it said...nothing. It ruled that Padilla's court' appointed attorney, Donna Newman, filed the petition for writ of habeas corpus (challenging the detention of her client without charge, without access to her) in the wrong federal court. She sued Rumsfeld, on whose order Padilla was named an "enemy combatant" in the Southern District of New York, where he was brought and incarcerated and where she was appointed. But after she got into the case, and without notice to her, the government moved him to a brig in South Carolina. So the government argued that the warden of the brig is the party to be sued, not Rumsfeld. As if that warden does not answer to Rumsfeld, at least if she is holding an enemy combatant-so-called. So with Rehnquist writing for the majority, the court threw out his petition. Altogether. Padilla has to start all over again, suing the warden wherever he or she is. Ah, but keep in mind, that once his attorneys file a another petition, the government just has to move him again. And again. And again. To avoid answering for his detention." |
