"Legislation allowing commercial airline pilots to carry guns in the cockpit passed the House Wednesday, but it is not likely to get a hearing in the Senate."
"We believe that aviation security has been improved in several ways, including strengthened cockpit doors and additional federal air marshals on airlines," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said after the vote. "A gun bill that supporters said would provide greater protections to victims of domestic violence may have the opposite effect, according to women's advocates."
"The main purpose of the legislation, approved Wednesday by the House, was to amend the state's landmark 1998 Gun Control Act by allowing people convicted of non-violent felonies and most violent misdemeanors to regain their rights to carry concealed weapons."
"The bill's supporters said the law was unfair to people who committed a minor crime in their youth, but specifically sought to create a gun ownership ban on those convicted of assault and battery against a family or household member."
"Women's advocates Thursday said this section of the bill would be impossible to enforce because criminal records do not now indicate whether the victim of an assault was a relative or a stranger."

Police invaded the home of a man they allegedly believed to be dealing in one of the few drugs from which the federal government doesn't overtly profit. When they broke into the man's home, his booby trap put some unsightly holes in their legs -- via a shotgun.
Now he's in jail with various charges and dealing with BATF and the U.S. Marshall service -- BATF because a firearm was involved, and the Marshall Service because it's a federal crime to rig your own property such that surviving intruders don't want to come back any time soon. |

"The Bush Administration is now to the left of Senator Barbara Boxer on arming airline pilots. The liberal California Democrat on July 10 co-sponsored a bill by conservative Bob Smith, R - N.H., that lets qualified pilots carry firearms to stop airborne terrorists."
"I think this is the first time I have ever stood with Senator Smith on an issue that has involved guns," Boxer said at a news conference.
"I believe that pilots who are carefully trained and want to carry a gun in the cockpit should be allowed to do so."
"The White House opposes this policy. If Barbara Boxer gets it, what is W's excuse? For its part, the House - with 102 Democrats in favor - voted 310 to 113 on July 10 to let pilots voluntarily fly with side arms. The Senate should assent and push the president to get with it on this issue." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888). |
