CA: Marjie Lundstrom: Here's the problem - 'Gun fun' for a few puts many at risk

"Amid the rancor in Contra Costa County over big guns - the county's controversial new ban on .50-caliber rifles was legally attacked again this week by gun groups - a nagging question lingers: Who wants these things, anyway? I mean, what is the point of having a .50-caliber sniper rifle that can take out a Humvee and penetrate inch-thick steel? I've been accused more than once of just not getting all this 'gun fun.' I confess: I still don't."

"But a majority of supervisors in Contra Costa County don't either, recently making theirs the second local jurisdiction in California to ban the sale of the powerful, large-caliber rifles. The city of Los Angeles passed a similar measure last year." ...

Kerry gun-shy on assault weapons

... "Last November, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, now the likely Democratic nominee for president, cosponsored legislation by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., that would make permanent the 1994 assault weapons ban, tighten control of high capacity magazines and expand coverage to include the SKS and dozens of other rifles, pistols and shotguns. The bill, which has since languished, would ban manufacture and import of those models and require all sales of those already in circulation to go through licensed dealers, complete with background checks."

"Making the one-on-one sale to another Peck would be illegal under such a law."

"But Kerry is likely to seek renewal of the existing assault weapons ban rather than advocate an expansion as he reaches out to rural voters with guns, campaign aides said last week. That reflects a broader effort by Democrats to come to political grips with the Second Amendment." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A Hartford business man took the law into his own hands against a would be robber today.

This all happened early in the morning on Broad Street at Campus Pizza near Trinity College.

John Skouloudis has been carrying a gun everyday for the seventeen years he's owned Campus Pizza in an area know as Frog Hollow in Hartford.

Until today he never fired his gun. According to him, a would be robber came in and pointing a firearm.

Skouloudis ducked behind the counter and heard two shots fired. He pulled out his own gun and fired two shots in return.

When he looked up the robber was gone. Skouloudis still had his money and, more importantly, his life.

"Publicola,

Here's a crime that occurred in Florida over the holiday weekend, and it illustrates the flaw of relying on government as the primary source of civil protection. Sunday afternoon in Ocala, Debra Vazquez was chased through the city by her enraged estranged husband Jose Vazquez."

"Although her husband rammed the SUV she and her child were fleeing in, she managed to drive to the Ocala Police HQ. Unfortunately, at 2:30 PM there were no officers present and Jose pulled her away from the door, back into the parking lot and shot her dead." ...

"The 12-year-old girl was stabbed to death in her Escondido bedroom in January of 1998. Police arrested three teens, including her brother, after two of them confessed."

"But on the eve of trial ... lab tests found drops of Stephanie's blood on a shirt worn by a mentally ill transient roaming the Crowe neighborhood the night of the slaying." ...

"'I'm too dumb to know what I was getting myself into,' Caloca said. 'I thought that the people who worked the case in the beginning had the same ideals that I had, which was to get justice for this little girl. But it didn't happen that way.'"

But a system which is perfectly happy to railroad some teenagers for a murder they didn't commit, and which fights a member's efforts to find the truth, this is a system which Sarah Brady says should have a monopoly on force.

In fact, the president never asked the House to continue the ban, which will expire in September, because he knew it was pointless, says Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.)."

"A shotgun blast next to his ear sent a London bar employee to hospital early yesterday after a firearm tug-of-war between staff and a disgruntled man backed by a gang of friends. No one was injured when the gun went off, said London police Const. Cam Halliday."

"Bar staff kicked an unruly patron out of the Roxbury Bar on Oxford Street East about 1:30 a.m., Halliday said."

"The man returned two hours later with about four buddies -- and a shotgun, bar owner James Vilos said."

"Vilos denied any of the people involved in the incident were inside the Roxbury Friday night. He said doormen had refused to let one of the men into the bar earlier in the night because he was intoxicated." ...

... "The war on violence needed an opening skirmish. And Kwame Kilpatricks volley last week, however politically motivated, was aimed at an appropriate target: criminals who use guns." ...

"The profusion of illegal guns needs to become the next battleground. The gun lobby may be powerful but why should it be more powerful than the antigun lobby?"

"In fact, the gun lobby ought to lead: The manufacturers need to take responsibility for the way their gun distribution networks so often fail to keep guns out of criminal hands."

"Law enforcement and the courts needs to hold them accountable. And we need to demand that they do." ...

"Seated at a table outdoors, Little Britches picked up his guns and shot at two paper targets with outline drawings of people before jumping up and running into an outhouse and shooting from the back of the building at other targets."

"Standing near the taped-off shooting area set up to look like a scene from the Old West with a mercantile, Firelands jail and livery stable, Little Britches, also known as Michael Gnizak, 12, said although he didn't shoot as well as he would have liked in the outhouse event, it was his favorite of the day."

"When Hillary Clinton claimed to see 'a vast right-wing conspiracy' in America, she was 'correct but not quite in the way she intended.'"

"So say John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, two Britons who cover the United States for The Economist magazine of London. Their book is a broad-brush portrait of American conservatism, which they dub "the Right Nation." It is a reporter's book, thin on ideology and full of anecdote, and it gets a lot of things about the Right right."

"The Right Nation, they say, is an army of disparate militias: tax cutters, gun owners, home schoolers, abortion opponents and defenders of Christian values. Each group considers itself a struggling minority, but together they make a formidable movement that in the past 30 years has out-thought, out-spent and out-organized its rivals." ...
