"The founder of the Second Amendment Foundation today said he will supply Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke with documentation on the 'text book case' from Missouri that helped convince that state's legislature to pass a 'Stand-Your-Ground' law to protect citizens from criminal or civil prosecution when they shoot in self- defense."

"... Helmke told MSNBC viewers that he has been unable to identify anybody who has ever been sued and suffered financially for shooting in self-defense."

"'Helmke is sadly uninformed, and we're going to educate him,' Gottlieb said. 'The case of a Carroll County man who was charged ... for shooting a burglar and subsequently acquitted, but then was sued almost immediately in civil court for $250,000 ...'" ...

"I recently visited Chicago, where I met with the Reverend Jesse Jackson. On Saturday, I appeared at a series of events sponsored by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition calling for common-sense steps to end gun violence."

"Hundreds of marchers, led by Rev. Jackson, converged on a suburban Chicago gun shop which has supplied hundreds of guns that were traced to crimes. We know from national data that most Federally-licensed gun dealers never sell even a single gun thats used to commit a crime. When stores like Suburban Sporting Goods Ammo and Guns in Melrose Park, Illinois channel hundreds of crime guns into a community 712 in a single four-year period one has to question those business practices ..." ...

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined members of the local congressional delegation and mayors, lawmakers and law enforcement officers from around the country yesterday to blast federal legislation limiting police use of federal gun traces."

"Bloomberg and others spoke out against the Tiahrt Amendment, a rider on the Justice Department appropriations bill since 2003 that bars police from using ownership traces by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for far-reaching investigations."

"Instead, police can use the traces only for a specific criminal investigation. And under a new version of the amendment passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee, cops who use the traces for other purposes would now face jail." ...

"Now is the time for Speaker Nancy Pelosi to deliver on her pledge to reverse the gun lobbys pernicious handcuffing of law enforcement officials trying to track the flood of illegal firearms."

"For years, police used the federal governments extensive gun data files to trace firearms used in crimes from manufacture to retail purchase, laying bare the minority of unscrupulous dealers who abet the underworld. But four years ago, police access to the databank was cut off by the politically potent gun lobbys many panderers in Congress." ...

"House Democrats are 'one vote away' from repealing an appropriations amendment that restricts local law enforcement's ability to access federal gun trace data."

"Second Amendment supporters say the amendment protects police investigations and prevents anti-gun groups from using gun trace data in 'frivolous' civil lawsuits against the firearms industry."

"But the opponents of the amendment argue that the restrictions tie investigators' hands. They say the gun-trace data is an essential crime-fighting tool that should be made available to police."

"But observers on both sides of the divisive issue say there are simply not enough votes to get the measure passed."

"A California attorney named Chuck Michel, who's done lots of work for gun owners in the state, decided he wanted to see what's going on with the California mayors who've signed on to Bloomberg's gun-grabbing group. So he submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to their offices, seeking documents and communications between the left-coast mayors and Bloomberg."

"The majority view in Mississippi on the issue of gun control remains that it means hitting the target at which one is aiming the weapon."

"As a gun owner, hunter and one who regards the Second Amendment as a necessary safeguard of both democracy and the defense of one's home and hearth, I tend to be skeptical of most efforts to institute governmental controls over the right to keep and bear arms."

"But my career in journalism has taught me on countless occasions that in far too many cases, the wrong person - the emotionally disturbed, the mentally ill, the chemically dependent or the psychopath - ends up in possession of a firearm at great peril to innocent, law-abiding citizens." ...

"There are at least eight pieces of legislation before Philadelphia City Council that would bring stricter gun laws here. They would certainly pass if the state Legislature would give Council the authority to enact the laws." ...

In their letter they wrote of how, with the help of Southern Illinois Republican Senators, they were able to hold hostage the budget until something was done about the electric rate crisis. "Statistics gathered over the past three years show that target shooting -- with rifle, handgun and shotgun -- is actually more popular than many pastimes historically considered mainstays of warm-season recreation."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
