Most Americans, regardless of which side of the political aisle they are on, agree that one of the primary roles of a government is to ensure public safety. From national defense to protection of our civil rights, there lies a proper role for the government. What then, is the governments role in protecting children in the school system? Schools in 33 states are bound by state laws to produce and file school safety plans. Many schools that can afford them have School Resource Officers (SROs) who are members of local law enforcement.

Attorneys for a man arrested in 2012 in St. Lucie County asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to take up a challenge to the constitutionality of a Florida law that bars people from openly carrying firearms in public. The petition to the U.S. Supreme Court came slightly more than four months after the Florida Supreme Court, in a 4-2 decision, upheld the longstanding law. Monday's 35-page petition contends the law violates the Second Amendment and conflicts with U.S. Supreme Court rulings about gun rights.

Attorneys representing a Florida man challenging that states ban on open carry have, unintentionally or otherwise, raised an interesting problem for the U.S. Supreme Court, which they have petitioned for review. The case of Dale Lee Norman v. State of Florida may not wind up being heard by the high court but it does point to a dilemma. The Florida Supreme Court ruled against Norman, who was convicted for openly carrying a sidearm in violation of state law. The Florida court held that the Second Amendment does not guarantee a right openly to carry a firearm in public, according to the appeal brief. |

Applications for concealed carry licenses through the state attorney generals office dropped to a all-time low last year now that the state allows those 21 and older to carry concealed guns without a license. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidts office announced Tuesday that it received 5,119 new applications for concealed carry licenses in the fiscal year that ended June 30. According to a press release issued Tuesday, thats the fewest applications received since the program began in 2006. The state passed a law in 2015 eliminating the license requirement for Kansas gun owners, but those who apply for a license can carry in other states that recognize Kansas licenses. |

Two men walked into the Dearborn Police Dept. on Feb 5, one of them openly carrying a rifle slung over his shoulder, the other with a video camera and tripod. Chaos ensued.
Both men, 41-year-old Brandon Vreeland of Jackson and 24-year-old James Baker of Leonard, were immediately ordered to the ground, handcuffed and arrested, even though their attorneys say it's completely legal to open carry firearms in a Mich. police station.
Baker was "tripped up on the silliest of technicalities," said Makowski, who's "very confident" both carrying a concealed weapon convictions will be dismissed on appeal.
In addition to the firearms convictions, the jury ruled Baker wasn't guilty on charges of brandishing a firearm or disturbing the peace. |

There's a certain poetic justice to the idea of turning a gun into a gardening tool, of returning "what came from soil back to soil," according to police Sgt. Steve Austin. And Hartford police, along with partnering community groups, are hoping to do just that Saturday with their latest gun buyback program. |

While its doors have been open for two months, the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce Monday marked the opening of Top Guns at its new facility near the intersection of 7th Street and U.S. 41. While we understand the firearms retail business, what we were not completely familiar with was the training and the range portion of the business, said owner Steve Ellis. So we wanted to make sure that our range officers were as trained as possible and that they really understood how to run the range and be safe before holding an event with the chamber. |

If you were to pick up a copy of the Tactical Weapons magazine this month, you would find the image of a man in police gear holding two massive guns. This is the Mossberg 590 Shockwave a gun with a 14-inch barrel and a pistol grip and I was surprised to find out these guns were recently legalized in Texas. Anyone from age 18 and up will soon be able to buy them over the counter without the months of wait time and tax stamps you would encounter purchasing a normal shotgun. |

When it comes to owning a gun and using it properly, safety is the most important aspect to keep in mind. That was the message Tuesday night at Bedford Township's town hall meeting discussing responsible gun ownership. Wayne Blank, a member of the National Rifle Association and Southern Michigan Sports Club, led the gathering. "When you're shooting in the township, a lot of times people don't think about where the bullet is going to end up," he said. "You need to have a backstop to catch the projectile. It needs to be dirt and free of debris to stop ricochets." |

Does it really come down to the judges? Should blame for repeat felons with access to guns and the temperament to use them be laid at the feet of the men and women in robes? Gov. Larry Hogan thinks that is a huge part of the problem. He cites the same statistics the police commissioner does about Baltimores repeat shooters. They dont even fear a guilty verdict because guilty verdicts in this city are suspended all or most of the time. Sixty percent of the time, Commissioner Kevin Davis has said.

Looking at this Girandoni air rifle doesnt reveal anything remarkable. But in fact, its one of the most historically significant guns in the NRA National Firearms Museum collection. You could almost go as far to say that it changed the entire history of our nation. This gun was carried by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1803 to 1806 during their Corps of Discovery expedition that took them from St. Louis to the Cascades in Oregon, to the Pacific Ocean and all the way back. How did they make this trek and back again without any major loss of life? There were only three dozen men or so in the expedition, so they could have been easily overwhelmed at any time.

The Modern Technique of the Pistol gave us four simple rules of gun safety that make it so much easier for us to prevent injury to ourselves or others. Rule No. 3 is, Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target. This is such an important safety rule that many of us call it the Golden Rule. In teaching the draw stroke, most of us teach the students to not only keep their finger off the trigger but to keep it out of the trigger guard area, too. |
