President Obama pushed Americans to call for stricter gun controls in the wake of the June 17 Charleston church massacre, complaining that the admitted killer, Dylann Roof, had no trouble getting his hands on a gun.

What the President likely didnt know when he made those comments is this: It wasnt a lack of gun controls, but a bureaucratic failure, that led to Roof obtaining the gun legally, due, it turns out, on a senior FBI document examiners unfamiliarity with South Carolina geography.

As such, details revealed Friday in the Dylann Roof case add to the complexity of the Presidents earlier call for a greater sense of urgency on gun safety,

Gov. Cuomo is backing off a key element of his much heralded 2013 gun control law, the NY-SAFE Act.
In a major concession to Senate Republicans and new Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, the Cuomo administration agreed to suspend development of a troubled statewide database of ammunition sales.
The agreement also gives Flanagan a veto over the databases future development, stating that no expenditures of state monies shall be allocated" for its future development unless both sides agree on a plan to move forward.
"This is a clear victory for Second Amendment rights in New York," said Sen. James Seward (R-Oneonta), who announced the deal.

When the troops land in Texas for Operation Jade Helm next week, someone will be waiting for them.
Hundreds of people have organized a "Counter Jade Helm" surveillance operation across the Southwestern states and in an effort to keep an eye on the contentious military drill that's sparked many suspicious of Uncle Sam's intentions.
Eric Johnston, a 51-year-old retired firefighter and sheriff's deputy who lives in Kerrville, is a surveillance team leader in Texas. He'll coordinate three groups of volunteers, about 20 folks in total, who hope to monitor the SEALs, Green Berets and Air Force Special Ops in Bastrop, Big Spring and Junction when Jade Helm kicks off on July 15.

Jansson continued: "We've completely removed that aspect of the game. You can't even pick them up". EA and DICE have reportedly developed an all-new combat system that emphasizes melee combat, where Jansson explained it in detail with Polygon: "Faith will fight, but she doesn't kill. Now the fighting is more of an extension of the movement. It builds on the flow. It fits a lot better with the game mechanics. When Faith is in flow, when she stitches together move after move without failing and keeps her momentum going, she's actually invulnerable to bullets. That can keep her out of harm's way. It's only when she stops that she can get hurt".

Counter to Washington state law, Seattle City Council President Tim Burgess has announced plans for a local ordinance that would impose new taxes on firearms and ammunition sold within city limits.

The proposal lays out a $25 tax on firearms and $.05 for every round of ammunition sold. The city councils Education and Governance Committee is set to take up the legislation on July 15. Burgess proposal is similar to a 2012 measure put forth in Illinois by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and is bad policy for the same reasons NRA-ILA outlined at that time.

Its tough to be a police officer when youre wearing handcuffs.
An NYPD cop who has been arrested three times in the past six months, but kept her job as the cases wound through the courts, has resigned.
Officer Stacey Staniland, 29, busted twice for drug possession and once for burglary since December, left the NYPD Monday, sources said.

Police officers Loran Butch Baker and Elizabeth Butler were investigating a suspect at his home in Santa Cruz, California when he shot and killed them in 2013. Before fleeing the scene, the shooter was believed to have stolen both officers guns.

The Santa Cruz sheriff at the time, Phil Wowak, doesnt think their deaths could have been prevented, but does think the departments response would have been faster, more efficient and more accountable had they had access to connected technology.

Humans are complicated and confusing creatures.

We often cling to misguided beliefs and self-destructive philosophies, even as we decry the impacts and results of those beliefs and philosophies.

One of the most confusing examples of this is when a minority that has suffered oppression and abuse advocates for policies that enable that abuse and remove options for protecting against future abuse.

The right to arms has long been recognized as a core distinction between a citizen and a subject, a free man and a slave.

Its a hot summer for the gun industry.

Background checks for gun sales spiked 11% in June compared to last year, making it the busiest June ever, according to the FBIs background check data.

Last month the FBI conducted nearly 1.53 million background checks, which are required for all in-store purchases, but not for sales at gun shows or between individuals. Thats the highest volume of checks in June since 1999, when the FBI started keeping track.

Gun background checks have climbed annually since 2003 with the exception of just three years, one of which was 2014, indicating a clear jump in gun sales.
