U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, today introduced with a Republican colleague legislation that she said would close loopholes that allow abusers and stalkers access to guns in Michigan and many other states.

The Zero Tolerance for Domestic Abusers Act, also being sponsored by U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan, R-N.Y., would bar convicted stalkers from owning firearms and require that people found to have abused dating partners are blocked from purchasing or possessing firearms as well.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., has introduced similar legislation in the Senate.

The National Rifle Association, which often takes positions against legislation curtailing firearms ownership, did not immediately respond to the Free Press ...

In my years of lobbying for NRA at the state and local level, I always enjoyed doing battle with big city and county government officials. When they were complaining, I was certain that we were doing the right thing and advocating for the empowerment of the people. As a rule, they like dependence, while we like independence. There just isnt a lot of common ground to be found. They know that when the people gain power, they lose a proportionate share in what is a certain zero-sum game.

I used to say that if a criminal ever decided to pick on me at any given moment, he had a 50/50 shot of running into an armed victim. That was because I had not yet made the decision to carry my firearm with me everywhere I went, every single day.

Years earlier, and fresh out of college, I had purchased a handgun for self-defense after realizing that my first real job required me to spend time in seedy industrial areas of big, unfamiliar cities and towns in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. That was back in the mid-eighties, before the landmark 1987 Florida legislation that launched the modern-day CCW movement.

Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and a host of other celebrities, politicians and anti-gun activists have once again declared the NRA to be a basket of deplorablesan organization full of racist, sexist, xenophobic fascists.

That is a common refrain from Yanezs defenders, who say Castile, after disclosing that he had a concealed weapon, should have immediately placed his hands on the dashboard or steering wheel and awaited further instructions from Yanez, Jacob Sullum notes at Reason. But Yanez never asked Castile to do that. Nor did he tell Castile to stop moving or to keep his hands in plain sight. He did not even ask Castile where the gun was. Instead he told Castile not to pull the gun out, and Castile assured him that he wasnt. All the evidence indicates that Castile thought he was doing what Yanez wanted by retrieving his drivers license.

We recently celebrated Independence Day, and now that the echoes of the fireworks have faded, the hot dogs eaten and the bunting put away, lets reflect on what it really means.

At the heart of it is the Second Amendment.

Because the judge ruled that the plaintiffs did not have standing, he did not opine on the substance of their novel First and Second Amendment claims. We had discussed the implausibility of those claims at length in a prior article on the case. Its particularly notable that the learned professors hoped to convince the court that the Second Amendment itself REQUIRES the university to BAN law-abiding students from possessing firearms on campus.

Nashville officials are working to revise signs at Metro Transit Authority bus stop to reflect a new policy; bus riders with permits can carry guns.

The law went into effect on July 1 and allows people with gun permits enter city buses and its main bus terminal with their guns.

"I think a lot of parents are going to have concerns with the idea of people who are armed carrying guns on these MTA buses that are used by thousands of school children in the state," Beth Roth with the Safety Tennessee Project says.

MO: Heres how Gov. Eric Greitens could help Kansas City combat violent crime

Greitens gave a dismissive reply, reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: You and I have different positions on the Second Amendment.

The governor should bring a more open mindset if he visits Kansas City. In urban areas such as ours, criminals access to guns is a major issue.

Changes to state law have hampered law enforcements ability to confiscate guns from those they suspect have criminal intent.

Ed.: As it should be. You can't steal peoples' property and violate their fundamental civil rights based on a cop's suspicion.

It is past time for the ineffective, unconstitutional law that bans adults from obtaining concealed-carry permits inside the District of Columbia to be revisited.

This has come to national attention following the shooting of Rep. Scalise (R-Georgia) in a Virginia ball park, when several members of Congress expressed the need for congressmen to be allowed to carry concealed weapons in Washington, DC. Members of Congress involved in that incident likewise expressed a need to be personally armed against the threats they face almost daily. While Capitol Police saved the day, it was a close call, reminding us of the catch phrase, When you need help now, police can be there in minutes.

IL: Chicago doesn't need more gun control

Murders in the city had been on the decline since the violent peak of the 1990s, and the relatively peaceful mid-2000s, but in the past few years the violence has been steadily increasing. In 2016, 726 people were killed, up from 407 in 2014. The increase in violence in 2016 made Chicago a key campaign issue. Donald Trump cited it as evidence of the growing chaos in Americas inner-cities, posing as the law and order candidate who would deal with the problem. Hillary Clinton recast it as an issue of gun control and poverty.
