"Folks can go to www.mytopo.com and build 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) maps for large AO's."

"All they have to do is choose the 36X48 inch size map, orient it the desired direction (tall or landscape), center the area, and they've got an AO map. Subsequent smaller area maps can be generated from the specific AO in question for detailed navigation."

"Why 36X48? Because they cover 860.6 square miles or 550,784 acres. If the AO for the group in question is not as large, they should get a 1:25,000 scale which will cover 215.8 square miles or 138,112 acres." ...

"As a teenager, I discovered 'turkey shoots' in New Hampshire. Turkey shoots are run different ways in different places, but in the Granite State they revolved around shooting full-size deer targets at 100 yards, with 'standing deer' and 'running deer' events. It was a rare hunter with the time and money to set up the motor-and-pulley arrangement for the running target on his own, but a fish and game club could do it, make a profit for the club, and give us hunters much-needed experience in leading fast-moving venison on the hoof a hundred yards away. "The NRA is sticking its muzzle in all kinds of legislation that dont look much like gun laws, the New York Times reports. The gun group's lobbyists, thanks in part to their close relationship with Harry Reid, have put their fingerprints on everything from health care legislation (making it illegal for insurers to boost premiums on gun owners) to campaign finance reform ..."

"... It's also a group with little else to do; recent Supreme Court rulings have basically turned its signature issue into settled law. But the group's broader focusand cooperation with Reidhas occasioned some blowback. A recent Gun Owners of America blog post was titled, 'The NRA Sells out Freedom to the Democrats.'"
-------

Submitter's Note: "Settled law", eh? So I can walk into any hardware or sporting goods store in New York City, plunk down my cash and walk out a minute later with my Tommy gun, some 20 and 50-round mags and a couple of thousand JHP rounds? I can then load up, sling my weapon over my shoulder and walk down to City Hall or One Police Plaza? Then I can hop on my Vespa, slip my weapon into its holder, ride up Bowery to 4th and then on up Park Avenue without ever once worrying asbout someone calling out the S.W.A.T. team on me?

... "The militia movement and Christian Reconstructionism both contend that our current civil government, most especially the federal government, is illegitimate: that it has overreached the limits of its divinely[sic] ordained authority, and that it continues to do so. At this intersection of the religious right and the militia movement, gun ownership is portrayed as a religious issue. 'When were talking about firearms,' GOA executive director Larry Pratt told RD, 'we're not really talking about a right but an obligation, as creatures of God, to protect the life that was given them.'" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: They forgot the "Lions and tigers and bears oh my!". This article presents a perfect example of taking quotes out of context, finding a fringe element to represent the whole group, implying guilt by association, dragging out 10 and 20 year old quotes and presenting them as current positions (heck, 20 years ago my sister was a Reagan Republican, now she is a pacifist Tibetan Buddhist), et cetera. This is yellow journalism at its finest.

Among the new laws, which are already being challenged, with support from the NRA, are a restriction to one gun per household and a continued ban on sale within the city limits of Chicago. None of this is surprising to anyone following the continuing saga of gun ownership rights in Chicago and across the nation. A liberal President may be in control of the White House, but he has to contend with the conservative majority in the Supreme Court, a body that does not miss any opportunity to assert its enormous authority vis-a-vis an ideologically impatient President. "Gun owners and Second Amendment rights activists might tend to vote Republican, but in this year's Ohio governor's race, that might not necessarily be the case."

"After winning the National Rifle Association endorsement in June, the incumbent Democratic governor, Ted Strickland, picked up another one Saturday -- the Buckeye Firearms Association, an influential group that lobbies for pro-gun legislation in the Ohio Statehouse."

"The antipathy of pro-gun organizations such as the NRA and the Buckeye Firearms Association toward John Kasich, the Republican candidate for governor, dates back 16 years to the vote then-congressman Kasich cast for President Bill Clinton's crime bill, which included a ban on assault rifles." ...

"In a final 5-2 vote Tuesday night, the Longmont City Council banned the open carrying of firearms in city buildings."

"The ban was suggested after Second Amendment advocate Paul Tiger showed up at a council meeting with a handgun holstered to his hip. Tiger, who pleaded guilty in 2007 to menacing a traffic-control flagger with a gun, intimidated employees, City Manager Gordon Pedrow said."

"'Unless open carry is prohibited, we have no way of preventing intimidation from happening,' Pedrow said before Tuesday's vote." ...

"'My position is this. The right of self-defense is fundamental, and handguns are recognized as the preferred method/instrument of self-defense. Therefore, the right to keep and bear arms is a constitutional right.'"

"'My belief is that the laws in place regulating reasonably places and manners of using or possessing firearms, so long as not an effective ban, would probably withstand attack on constitutional grounds. I plan to continue to enforce the state laws relating to firearms, with sound discretion of course, until there is some decision finding them unconstitutional.'" ...

"You couldn't miss the group of 40 activists cleaning up trash over the weekend with guns in tow. One man had a NR-15[sic] slung over his shoulder, and another kept a handgun on his hip. The group, mostly white men under 35, was participating in a rally on Valley Drive in support of California's open carry law."

"Despite the guns, this event seemed to be 'much ado about nothing.' The participants, mostly members of the South Bay Open Carry organization, hoped to demonstrate to the community that those who prefer to be armed in public are regular, law-abiding citizens. That is, assuming the average beach resident just happens to have a penchant for semi-automatic weapons." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Gun control? It's the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I'm a bad guy, I'm always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, whose testimony convicted John Gotti.
