No. 2 pencils, spiral notebooks, markers, Smith & Wesson snub-nose, .38 hollow-points.

That’s not an actual school supplies list, obviously, but there seems to be some confusion on how the state’s concealed carry law applies to schools.

If you thought schools were among the places where permit holders couldn't legally carry guns, you’re only partially correct.

Have you ever thoughtfully considered just how we got to where we are regarding the gun issue? Our nation was founded and evolved as a uniquely free society during the same time period that modern firearms were invented and became readily available due to the industrial revolution. Combine those two events with our founding fathers' genuine fear of tyrannical government along with a need for protection on a dangerous frontier and you have the answer - a modern society with an estimated 250 million guns.

A sawed-off shotgun, a pearl-handled pistol, a rifle complete with leather shoulder strap — one by one they were clamped into a vice and a circular metal blade ended their usefulness.

For more than an hour, parts of guns taken off Clovis streets were tossed into a box outside the evidence room at the Clovis Police Department.

Josiah Williams and four friends were playing with Airsoft (BB type) guns Thursday night in a grassy area of a Mt. Pleasant apartment complex on Margery Drive.

"When people walked by we'd uh most definitely stop and let people by," 15-year-old Tommy Sharrett explained. "Even if people asked questions about what we were doing.. we didn't want to make it look like we played with actual guns. We'd tell them these are Airsoft, we're just playing for fun."

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has voted to renew the Tiahrt Amendment, which limits local police access to a federal database of gun purchases.

That's how the cookie crumbles for anyone cheeky enough to challenge the gun lobby.

When criminals need guns, they have plenty of options in a country with nearly 100,000 licensed gun stores. But drug dealers and other crooks don't shop just anywhere. They have their favorites.

In Compton, Calif., gangsters preferred Boulevard Sales & Service, a shop police said was so felon-friendly, some salesmen offered tips on how to buy a gun despite a criminal record.

Montana State University's plan to restrict firearms and ban concealed weapons from campus would actually make students more vulnerable if a Virginia Tech-style gunman were ever on the loose, many gun rights activists are arguing.

OSHA, the Occupational Safety Hazard Adminiatration[sic], is attempting to prevent the delivery of ammunition to hunters.

One measure prohibits delivery drivers from leaving "explosives" unattended. This would prevent UPS, FedEx or similar delivery services from delivering gunpowder, primers or ammunition to dealers. Not only would the ruling make it impossible for retailers to sell ammunition (unless the dealer was within driving distance of the manufacturer), it would end catalog sales as well.

It is not clear why officers thought those guns would be in Strickland's house. Strickland is not in the photo. Mills did not live with Strickland. He lived in a townhouse three miles away; the address appeared in a campus directory.

Police found nothing but an unloaded hunting rifle and shotgun in Strickland's room at the other end of his house, said his father, Don Strickland of Durham. Peyton Strickland was a licensed hunter.

It hardly matters that it's the Democrats who now ostensibly control Congress. On the critical matter of fighting gun crime, it's still the gun lobby that prevails. The National Rifle Association in particular still controls enough votes, on both sides of the aisle, to stop local governments from making even modest progress in their quest to reduce gun violence. Really, now, what sensible person would resist legislation that would give local governments and police agencies access to data tracking gun sales? Why can't they know where guns used in the commission of crimes came from?

Right now, Ohio law says that if you shoot an intruder dead in your home, you have to prove self-defense. If someone barges through your bedroom window in the middle of the night and you kill him, police and prosecutors could investigate, said State Sen. Steve Buehrer. To justify your actions, and avoid the chance of going to prison, you'd have to prove you believed you were in imminent danger. Buehrer wants to give you an automatic right to shoot. And if you do shoot, he wants to shield you from lawsuits.

Women from across the state pulled the trigger today. They got a lesson in how to shoot shotguns. It was part of the first annual Women On Target clinic. It's a peaceful setting that comes with a bang. And these women are concentrating on two things, their gun and their game. Deborah Jasinski is one of dozens of women who came out to the North Country Sportsmen Club in Williston for a day of skeet shooting as part of the Women on Target clinic. "It I think offers a little bit more of a level of comfort so you feel like you can learn and rally kind of practice in a safe environment," she said.

He's the poster child for the state's tough new gun law. Peguy Desir, a 28-year-old Manhattan gun runner, sold NYPD undercover cops 83 guns during a year-long sting operation, police said. Until the new law was passed, he only faced a slap on the wrist for allegedly supplying dangerous criminals with handguns. Under the new legislation, he faces more jail time for a single gun sale than he had faced for three prior busts combined. "The message on the subway ad campaign we launched says it best - 'Illegal possession of a loaded gun now carries a minimum of 3-1/2 years in prison. Period. End of Story,'" Mayor Bloomberg told the Daily News.

The 100th anniversary of the renowned National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry is being observed through Aug. 14, and the beginning of the celebration last week went off with a bang - actually lots of bangs. A First Shot ceremony Monday night was followed by the opening matches Tuesday for the pistol discipline, featuring revolvers. A national pistol champion is to be crowned this weekend after grueling competition that includes hundreds of rounds fired with special .22, centerfire, and .45 semiautomatic target pistols. As many as 6,000 shooters from across the United States are set to step up to the firing lines before the last shot is fired Aug. 14.

Republican Presidential Candidate Ron Paul spoke before a group from Google Inc. highlighting his views on the Second Amendment...

"An adamant opponent of gun control, Paul said, "I think the Second Amendment might have prevented 9/11." If the hijackers knew the passengers or crew might be armed, they may have never planned such an attack, he said. And while he values the work of immigrants coming to the United States, he thinks illegal immigrants should not be given a special pass to citizenship."

The country's largest gun lobby is no longer offering free tickets to get to Sesame Street. The National Rifle Association had been giving away free tickets to Sesame Place, an amusement park that caters to children, and other theme parks in return for online donations to its political arm, the Institute for Legislative Action. Parent company Anheuser-Busch Cos. said Sesame Place should not have been included in the promotion, which had drawn the ire of gun-control advocates. "This was an inadvertent error by Busch Entertainment Corp. and we apologize for any confusion," the St. Louis-based company said in a statement Friday.

Mayor Bloomberg lashed out at federal lawmakers yesterday for refusing to give police departments broader powers to trace illegal guns. "You couldn't write this stuff in a book," Bloomberg said on his weekly WABC radio show a day after House members refused to strike down a law that limits information that can be shared by police departments on the sale of out-of-state firearms. "Congress wants to protect the criminals," Bloomberg railed.

Living and working in such proximity to the media capital of the world, the scene of yet another week of officials' post-shooting press conferences, teary-eyed testimonials from grieving co-workers and family, and heartpounding searches for dangerous and desperate men - the logical aftermath of a society's treating handguns like religious sacrament - one might assume that everybody sees the same human waste, the same anguish, and would be sick of seeing it again and again. How one would be so miserably wrong.

Mayor Bloomberg denied yesterday that he bullied lawmakers in a failed bid to get them to scrap a federal amendment that makes it difficult for the NYPD to access gun-tracing data. "I don't know now what bullying tactics mean," Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show. Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), who chairs the House Appropriations Committee that oversees the bill, accused Bloomberg lobbyists of doing "what so many bullies do." "They threatened to run ads in my district if I didn't bow to their wishes," Obey said.
