A new study says having a gun might not make you safer.

TheTrace.com reports that the study conducted by Dr. David Hemenway and published in The Journal of Preventative Medicine indicates that, according to statistics, having a gun does not provide a significant benefit to a victim during a criminal confrontation.

It also indicates that instances where a firearm is used or is needed during such confrontations are much less common than most believe.

A Brewster County grand jury has returned a no bill in the year-old shooting of three men outside a home in the 600 block of East Holland Street near the Stripes convenience store.

Alvino Gonzalez, 29, the resident of the home, had originally been charged with murder in the July 15, 2014, death of Reymundo Julian Vega, 29.

The grand jury reviewed all the evidence including new lab reports and determined it was not enough to indict Gonzalez, District Attorney Rod Ponton said.

He declined to say what the lab reports revealed but indicated that it could have been a case of self defense.

Despite the prevalence of guns, the violent crime rate is low: government figures show about 0.5 gun homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2010. The U.S rate in the same year was about five firearm killings per 100,000 people, according to a 2011 U.N. report.

Our higher statistics are not because of gun ownership, but because of the inner-city culture, the drug epidemic and ignored mental health issues in our country. To lower our gun deaths, these are the issues that have to be seriously addressed.

MO: Did A Missouri Law Accidentally Gives Felons The Right To Own Guns?

One of the most common mistakes of some gun right supporters is failing to understand that the Bill of Rights , including the Second Amendment, was written to constrain the federal government. It was not written to establish what each state may do, which is why each state has their own constitution and sets of laws to apply specifically within their borders. As part of these state-level laws, most states enshrined a right to bear arms (not all did), and many passed further restrictions on what rights convicted felons may have after they are released from prison, including denying them the right to bear arms.

Bob McWilliams (The Capital, June 26) stated that enough is enough when it comes to flying the Confederate flag on government buildings. I certainly agree. Take it down.

But if the hate symbolized by that flag is enough to shame the flag and finally put it in its proper place (on the dung heap of history, as one columnist put it), why on earth aren't the means to act on that hate guns also enough to shame those means and put those guns in their proper place, namely out of reach of public ownership?

The former animal cruelty investigator for Lincoln County currently works at the landfill as a roll-off truck driver by day. In the evenings, he can generally be found in his woodshop putting his creative impulses to good use most recently in creating gun hides that offer gun owners creative options for strategically hiding weapons in their home. The creations began to draw interest in January when Maxwell began posting pictures online.

At this point, I am just a hobbyist but I have been working with wood my entire life, Maxwell said. I am very comfortable with my situation but if things grow any more I will have to look at a business license.

Watch this totally illegal drone fire a handgun

This isn't the first video we've seen of a firearm attached to consumer-grade drone, but it is the most convincing. The 14-second clip, uploaded to YouTube last Friday, claims to show a "homemade multirotor with a semiautomatic handgun mounted on it." The drone fires four times, with the recoil from each shot pushing it backwards in the air. If the footage is real, then the craft is certainly illegal at least from the perspective of the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), which regulates aircraft and drones.

ID: Maine expands gun rights while Idaho lawmakers balk

Idaho lawmakers should take note of what just happened in Maine. On July 8, Gov. Paul LePage signed a bill that will let Mainers carry a concealed weapon without a permit. That makes Maine the seventh state to allow guns to be carried outside of view and under clothing without government permission.

Maines action is notable because Idahos Legislature has a gaggle of members professing adoration of the Second Amendment. Yet, unlike Maine, where concealed carry legislation was allowed to advance and reach the governor, an Idaho bill to allow permitless concealed carry was denied a hearing in the 2015 legislative session.

Cody Wilson, the inventor of the 3D printed gun is engaged in a lawsuit against the State Department claiming violation of first amendment rights.

The suit, filed by the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and Wilsons firm Defense Distributed, claims prior restraint by the government over the other information related to the three-dimensional printing of arms and online publication of blueprints.

The information weve gathered so far is that this male person may have entered the compound through the front gate and went to the back area of the compound where it is alleged that he had a confrontation there with the security guard who was armed at the time. The security guard is alleging that he was assaulted and attacked by this person with a metal pipe. He pulled out his service weapon and fired a single shot which caused that fatal injury.

The Second Amendment should supersede a Florida law that bans firearms from state university housing, a gun-rights group argued before seemingly skeptical appellate judges.

The First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee heard arguments Tuesday from Florida Carry Inc., which contends students and other people residing in on-campus housing at the University of Florida should be allowed to maintain possession of firearms as they would at their parents' homes.

"All we are saying is that the right to possess a firearm in one's home is fundamental," said Florida Carry attorney Lesley McKinney after the hearing. "Regardless of where one's home is, it's still their home."

The South Jersey town of West Deptford is tightening rules on public protests after a series of demonstrations outside New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney's home, but the restrictions have opponents crying foul over free speech concerns.

On Wednesday night the West Deptford Township Committee approved an ordinance that requires any protesters targeting a residence to stay at least 100 feet from the property line.

The last few weeks in America saw black churchgoers slaughtered by a white supremacist who had no business with a gun, a cop murdered by a criminal who had no legal right to one, and more kids killed by firearms that were not properly stored.

But we havent seen a renewed debate on guns in Congress. One reason is the amount of money self-described gun rights groups are spending to elect allies who will do nothing except promote the financial interest of the beleaguered firearms industry.

While its not yet clear what effect, if any, the church shooting in Charleston will have on gun purchases, a growing number of African-Americans across the United States have changed their position on firearms in recent years, breaking with a long tradition of gun control advocacy among blacks and embracing the kind of pro-gun positions that are more widely held by whites.

To be sure, attitudes toward guns are still deeply divided along racial lines, with 60 percent of blacks prioritizing controls on gun ownership over protecting gun rights, while 61 percent of whites say they consider gun rights more important than gun controls, according to a December poll by the Pew Reserch Center.

A second new survey, this one by the anti-gun Violence Policy Center in D.C., found that when guns are used to kill people, all but a tiny number are used for murder, not self defense. During a four-year period ending with 2012, according to the study, 42,419 killings were criminal homicides and just 1,108or 2.49 percentwere justifiable homicides.

A study from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence reports 73% of children under the age of 10 living in homes with guns, know the location of their parents firearms.

Batista said parents should take responsibility.

If youre using your gun for self defense, it should be on your person, he said.

When not using a gun, Batista recommends unloading it and putting it in a lock box. Owners can also use a gun lock. 707 Gun Shop has several options, some go over the trigger and others disable the magazine.

Establishing a bond with a pocket pistol is similar to marriagein one way: You have to be willing to accept compromise. To make any compromise worth the effort, there must be a clear objective. In this case preserving your life is the goal, and pocket pistols, whether diminutive semi-automatics or small-frame revolvers, do their part and offer a solution that is easy to carry concealed. Merely slipping one into the front pocket of your jacket, however, will not prevent a determined threat from causing you bodily harm. To stop a violent attack, you must be prepared to counter with force adequate to end the confrontation.

Carlson told Fox & Friends that she bought a gun because she was under extreme duress from a series of stalkers, some of whom had actually been able to get to her. She talked of one in particular who ambushed her while she was in her car.

In a state thats become a poster child for Yes, gun control does harm innocent people, another honest, otherwise law-abiding gun owner has become ensnared in the tentacles of the Garden States restrictive gun-ban schemes.

Before you shrug it off and say New Jerseys gun laws dont affect you because you live in another state, read on.

Brian Fletcher, a 41-year-old father of two from Butner, N.C., now faces the loss of his business, the loss of his right to vote or own a gun, and up to 10 years in prisonall for traveling to New Jersey to assist with storm-related utility repairs, and for being honest with law-enforcement officers he met while there on the job.

Should the doors of the church be open and armed?

Beyond technology, the safety conversation has advanced to the need for church pastors and clergy to also arm themselves with weapons as a form of protection.

Everybody has a Second Amendment right to be armed with a weapon, but you cant blanket every churchs security needs across the country, Gallagher advised. If youre holding a gun, its for one or two reasons to take a life or defend someones life from being taken. Every pastor is not going to have the necessary training, maturity or law enforcement skill-set to be armed for the varied scenario-based situations, he added.

Both the oligarch and Tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms. Aristotle
