"California law-enforcement officers are getting new march-ing orders in combating terrorism: Don't collect intelligence on religious and political activities without clear suspicion that people or groups are involved in a crime."
"On Monday, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer promised sweeping new guidelines on intelligence gathering and surveillance of people not suspected of crimes."
"Lockyer's commitment trailed 19 months of pressure by civil libertarians and a series of reports by ANG Newspapers showing how state intelligence analysts issued warnings about political protest groups."

"They may be low-tech, but theyre highly deadly. After a decade of discard, choppers are back to being the mafias favourite weapon. And the reason why mankinds most primitive weapon is scoring over sophisticated pistols and revolvers in Mumbai is simple: The attacker is punished less if caught."

"There is a theme common to these two incidents: the victims were defenseless because of government or corporate edict."
"Lockheed-Martin prohibits employees from carrying weapons. States such as California and New Jersey prohibit just about any type of tool for self defense, especially firearms. History continues to prove that a disarmed population is a recipe for tragedy. Although two employees tried to disarm Douglas Williams, when a unarmed person tries to subdue an armed person, the result is both predictable, and unfortunate." |

"Cal Poly is but one of hundreds of campuses that penalize student speech of which they disapprove. This censorship regime has attracted little attention since the mid-1990s, after successful legal challenges at the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin, and Stanford University seemed to foretell the demise of speech codes."
"But in fact, campus censorship lives on, often justified under the guise of enforcing vague rules against racial or sexual 'harassment.' Administrators typically interpret these rules to encompass any speech that offends nonwhite students or insults the left-liberal-radical-feminist-postmodernist orthodoxies of the academic class. The rules are typically enforced by campus kangaroo courts with no semblance of fairness." |

"We frequently hear the proposition that in the line of defense of our liberties, first is the ballot box, then the soap box, then the jury box, and finally, failing all else, the cartridge box."
"The latter two really are the enforcement mechanisms for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights."
"An informed jury can and should be the means by which the right to freedom of speech is defended, as in the case of John Peter Zenger. An informed jury could protect against improper search and seizure, secure free exercise of religion, the right peaceably to assemble, and freedom from excessive fines and cruel and unusual punishment. Trial by jury also protects all those rights not specifically enumerated, but covered by the Ninth Amendment."
"An informed jury can also act to secure the right to keep and bear arms, by protecting citizens against prosecutions which would deny that right. I have read where there are something like 20,000 gun control laws on the books, all or nearly all of which are arguably unconstitutional." |

"For three bullets to leave the barrel in one shot takes 1/500th of a second--an equivalent of 60,000 rounds per minute. Keeping this in mind, O'Dwyer has taken the notion of in-line stacking to even greater heights. New applications of Metal Storm technology include a successfully tested 6-barrel 9mm system that fires at a rate of 240,000 rounds per minute and a 36-barrel prototype that fired a burst of 180 rounds at a rate of more than one million rounds per minute. But it's not just 9mm weapons being tested. Both 40mm grenade launcher prototypes and 60mm mortar rounds have been fired at similar rates."
"So advanced is the technology that Zink says he isn't worried about possible competition. Indeed, the official 'vision statement' of Metal Storm refers not to "next-generation" but rather "generation-after-next" defense systems for Australia's armed forces as well as the United States 'to enhance national security.' The company's chief concern is to make sure the technology is safeguarded from 'potential enemies.' " |

Relatives of some of the sniper victims are speaking out against gun violence.
They are on Capitol Hill lobbying senators against passage of Senate Bill S-659, which critics label a gun immunity bill.
It would protect gun makers and dealers from certain lawsuits. The goal is keeping victims of gun violence from holding gun manufacturers or sellers responsible for the actions of people using their products.
Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan, former Police Chief Charles Moose and leaders from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Million Mom March joined the families and others affected by gun violence to speak out.
The measure has 53 co-sponsors in the Senate. A similar measure has already passed the House. |

Did anyone else find the July 12 article " 'U' regents ban weapons from campuses, events" amusing? Apparently University of Minnesota attorneys believe the school can ban weapons because, under the Minnesota Constitution, "the university is independent from the State." I just find it interesting that the university can claim independence from a state law passed by the same Legislature that it is now going to for additional funding.
