As we watch formerly magnificent United States of America slide, inexorably, into decline, we wonder if this destruction from within, as rapid and lethal as it has been, could be corrected. Too many say no, it has never been done and never can be done.

As the standard firearm of its day, the AR-15 does not represent some bizarre over-extension of the right to keep and bear arms. It is the very core of that right. In the middle of June, a self-described radical Islamist ruthlessly gunned down a room full of Americans in the worst terrorist attack on United States soil since 9/11. In response, the Obama administration joined the usual suspects within the media and inveighed relentlessly against the perpetrator of the crime. It was time, the president said, to get serious in fighting terrorism, and that meant making it harder for people who want to kill Americans to get their hands on assault weapons. Once again, the AR-15 was under the microscope.

With National Rifle Association grades starting to leak out over the weekend, Missouri Republican governor candidates took the opportunity to fight for differentiation again. Brunner has also been endorsed by the debatably more stringent Gun Owners of America.

Open carry of firearms which is allowed in Ohio, the site of the Republican National Convention is a great deterrent to crime. Why would criminals attack an open carrier who can clearly defend himself when there are other victims around? Some argue that if you open carry, you are a target, that you give up your tactical advantage and will be shot first. There is such a miniscule chance of that scenario, its implausible, to say the least.

Alarmed by the succession of deadly police shootings, including Sunday's deaths in Baton Rouge, police union president Steve Loomis said he is appealing to the governor to declare an emergency. He said the state's open-carry law is making the job of securing the convention "much more difficult."

It is still fairly quiet near the site of the Republican National Convention but word is it wont stay that way. Police are shutting down more and more streets downtown. A pro-Second Amendment rally began at 12 Noon in Public Square. Black-clad riot police were riding by on their bicycles. A plane was flying overhead with a banner from Infowars that said something like HILLARY FOR PRISON.

The Perils of Open Carry

The open-carry movement faced a very public test in Dallas last week. It failed. While concealed carry can be championed ostensibly as a means of self-defense, open carry prioritizes performance over pragmatism. After all, openly carrying a firearm is an ideological statement more than a self-defense posture: It cedes the crucial element of surprise to an armed assailant. Open carrys true goal is to normalize extreme gun culture by making firearms familiar, visible and ubiquitous.

The Senator has asked for an explanation as to why he was able to find weapons being advertised on both social media platforms. This comes after reports Dallas shooter Micah Johnson bought a used gun via Facebook. "I remain deeply concerned that gun sales on Facebook and Instagram - or sales posted online but negotiated and concluded offline - may circumvent or violate state and federal laws, resulting in numerous unlawful sales of handguns, assault weapons and other firearms," wrote Senator Markey.
