"The State Department took extraordinary steps last week to shore up security related to its visa-granting Bureau of Consular Affairs (C.A.). Unfortunately for the American people, State's idea of heightened security was to detain a journalist, Joel Mowbray of National Review, who wrote about C.A.'s scandalously lax attitude toward screening visa applicants."

"Leaking classified material is illegal; reporting it is a First Amendment right which makes the leaked cable another of State's security problems, not Joel Mowbray's journalistic problem. The real irony is that pinheads at the State Department would detain an American citizen and journalist for interrogation while allowing thousands of potential terrorists to enter the United States without question."

"Why does our federal government, especially the White House, have so much trouble understanding the need to arm airline pilots? What is it that makes people who otherwise seem reasonable, fight against this most logical and reasonable of steps to provide a means to defend the flight deck from terrorists? Until 1987 it was legal for an airline pilot to be armed and there was no rash of problems that I recall from those relatively peaceful times."

This is the LA Times version of the story of the police officer who shot himself to death by accident. Notice the use of the word "freak" in the headline. When an average citizen dies in a gun-related accident, the LA Times calls for gun control, demonizes firearms and firearms owners and more. But when it's a government enforcement agent who violates the basic rules of gun safety and ends up dead, we get things like:

[from the text of the story]

"...he accidentally dropped his service pistol and it discharged..."

"...police are investigating how the firearm discharged and whether safety mechanisms worked properly."

"...dedicated officer who was an avid runner and relished coaching and mentoring young people."

"He was highly dedicated to children and working with them meant a lot to him"

et cetera.

Then there's the overall underlying but unspoken theme: if this can happen to a "veteran police officer," guns are too dangerous for regular people. Such is the anti-rights LA Times.

President George W. Bush ... has allowed his administration to take a politically disastrous position against the arming of airline pilots.

The counter-arguments by members of the Bush administration are so weak as to be laughable. The best point they can offer is that pilots must concentrate on flying the aircraft.

One puzzling aspect of this strange situation is the fact that the president flew F-102 fighters for the Texas National Guard from 1969-1973. He should know better.

"Its mind-boggling that the Bush Administration would oppose arming pilots, especially given the alternative should a plane be hijacked. The governments current contingency plan is to simply blast a passenger jet out of the sky using Air Force fighters. Now, given my background in firearms, I can state conclusively that a pilot with a Glock 19 is far less dangerous than the flaming wreckage of a jumbo jet plummeting to Earth after being hit by a Sidewinder or AMRAM missile..."

"On 16 July the North Carolina Senate overwhelmingly passed H. 622, the NRA-backed measure to stop reckless lawuits against firearm manufacturers. By a vote of 42-5, the Senate agreed to prevent municipalities from filing politically-motivated lawsuits that attempt to hold gun makers liable for the criminal misuse of their products."

KABA NOTE: Before you jump on the NRA bandwagon to support this bill, make sure and check with GrassRoots North Carolina's concerns about anti-gunshow amendments being part of the final draft -- we haven't checked this out closely enough to know if NRA's praise of the bill is justified.

Our frequent links to NRA's action alerts are not endorsements of their suggestions. To the contrary, we disagree with the NRA with enough frequency that we strongly encourage independent review and consideration of the positions of other grassroots groups' positions before taking any action they suggest.

"Opponents of allowing pilots to be armed have portrayed horror movie visions of pilots and terrorists shooting it out in the aisles of airliners.
