"A new campaign called 'Project Safe Neighborhood' has kicked off to promote gun safety in Arizona. In Tucson, authorities are focusing on neighborhoods in the 85745 zip code area, including neighborhoods west of Silverbell, between Sunset and 22nd Street."
"Authorities behind the campaign cite statistics that show higher gun-related deaths and injuries in this part of town. More than a dozen shooting deaths and injuries were reported in 2003."
------- KABA Note: And it will surely be just as successful as it was in Richmond. |

"David Yassky is about to receive the endorsement this afternoon of Thelma Davis, mother of slain Council Member James E. Davis, and another Brooklyn mother who lost a child to gun violence."
"The endorsement is meant to underline Yassky's expertise in gun control, including his role in writing and passing the Brady Bill and Assault Weapons Ban as a congressional aide to then-Congressman Chuck Schumer."
"While all of the candidates in the 11th are in favor of gun control, this is an area where Yassky's government experience seems to give him an advantage. It will be interesting to see whether something like this can get as much coverage as the racial narrative that everyone, including us, has been focusing on." |

"The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently ruled that gun owners may be negligent for shootings with their stolen firearms in specific situations, if they fail to properly lock up the weapons when they know someone with a history of violence has access to them."
"The state's high court, however, rejected broader firearm liability claims, dismissing the argument that gun owners should be held responsible for harm done with their weapons in all theft cases."
"The 28-page ruling arose from the 1999 fatal shooting of a Westminster police officer by a man with a history of assaults and mental illness who stole a .357 Magnum handgun from his father's poorly locked gun case." |

"The mayor of Washington D.C. has declared another crime emergency in his city. In Washington D.C., private ownership of handguns is prohibited which means that only the police and violent criminals have guns. ..."
"The New York state Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics has ruled that it is permissible for judges to pack a pistol beneath their robes while on the bench. Of course, it is extremely difficult for the average American to lawfully own a firearm in New York City, regardless of where it was purchased. And don't even think about bringing your gun into a courtroom!"
"An off-duty Chicago officer opened fire on two men who tried to mug him early Sunday morning. Thankfully, the police officer was not injured, the crime was foiled, and the suspects have been arrested. Had this crime been attempted on an ordinary citizen in anti-gun Chicago, however, the outcome would have been much different."
"These are just a few of the many examples of how gun control discriminates against ordinary citizens but allows exceptions for certain members of the government."

"Some years ago, I was genuinely shocked when a young man, age 27, told me he had never even touched a firearm. To me, a Southerner, it seemed unimaginable that any male could attain the age of 27 without ever having handled a gun."
"...In today's America, where there is no draft, most young men and women don't have any military experience. In the days of the draft, even draftees from big cities with gun-control laws like New York had been exposed to firearms."
"Furthermore, most Americans today grow up in urban areas where there is scant opportunity for recreational use of firearms. This absence of contact with firearms shows up as a sort of generic ignorance that one sees frequently in journalism and politics." |

"Frankly, we must admit to a little unease about a ruling from the New York state Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics."
"The committee has decided that it is permissible for judges to pack a pistol beneath their robes while on the bench." ...
"Thankfully, although the committee ruled in favor of pistol-packing jurists, it warned that judges must 'be patient, dignified and courteous' to those appearing before the bench and behave in "a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary."
"As it stands now, judges would have to comply with all existing gun laws, before bringing a firearm into their courtrooms."

"Police fired 616 shots last year, an astounding 75 percent more than the 352 in 2004 and the highest number in any year since 1999."
"They were also involved in 16 gunfights last year, up from 11 in 2004. No surprise there, as the city had more overall gun violence last year than the year before, with increases both in the number of shooting incidents and shooting victims."
"But here's what is troubling. In those gunfights with suspects, police fired 276 times - they did so just 92 times in 2004's gunfights - while the bad guys shot back at police just 72 times. The worst cop imaginable has more restraint than the average gunman, so this is clearly a red flag." |

"No bill has ever been written that was too ridiculous to support or pass into law. That's politics."
"But the House of Representatives has elevated that practice into an art form of late. Consider two gun-related bills endorsed by a House subcommittee in recent weeks."
"The bills in question are HR 5005 and HR 5092. Even the U.S. Justice Department agrees that some provisions contained in the bills could have a "chilling" effect on law enforcement's ability to crack down on sleazy gun traffickers, dealers and, indirectly, the gun-toting criminals endangering public safety." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. Alexis de Tocqueville |
