"Thousands of airline travelers a day are wrongfully identified as being on the governments 'no fly' list of known or suspected terrorists due to the failings of the airline industrys pre-screening process, experts told a congressional panel Wednesday. Meanwhile, the government system intended to take over that screening process is so underfunded it might not get off the ground, a government official warned." ...

Columbus City Council will meet [July 11] starting at 5 pm for its routine weekly meeting. What is NOT routine is that Council will likely be holding its final public comment, and a final vote, on the controversial and irrational ban on most semi-automatic rifles, and many shotguns and handguns.
Council has indicated that it will hear from three proponents of the ban/registration scheme, and three opponents, prior to its vote that night. Some minor modifications are possible to the proposed ordinance, but the ban is likely to pass. Under Columbus City Code, the ban would become law 30 days after any such vote by Council.
This is an anti-gun City Council that has largely ignored the comments of law-abiding Columbus residents who do not wish to be "criminalized" with the stroke of a pen.
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THIS COUNCIL MEETING TO SHOW YOUR CONTINUED OPPOSITION TO THIS ENTIRELY UNNEEDED PIECE OF LEGISLATION. |

Bob Barr's dismissal of the ASK program ("Anti-gun initiative full of blanks," @issue, June 29) is paranoid bluster.
As a parent who asks, I can attest that I couldn't care less if someone owns guns, enjoys shooting or is a National Rifle Association member. I simply won't let my children become a statistic by playing unsupervised in a home where guns are present. Further, every parent of whom I've ever asked this awkward question has been candid and appreciative.
The ASK program isn't stealth anti-gunism; it's pragmatism in action. It avoids infringement on Second Amendment rights and concentrates instead on preventing the too-common tragedy of dead or wounded children. I wonder if Barr has ever considered that accidental gun deaths of children might be at an all-time low because parents are asking. |
