Take The ATF Challenge!

Since we have been going through this ordeal with the ATF, many of my friends in law enforcement have came forward to support us and to also tell us about their disrespect for the BATFE. The reason is not just because they are shutting down honest gun dealers over paperwork errors but the fact that when they find felons in possession of a firearm or guns used in a crime that the ATF REFUSES to press federal charges. ...

Here is my challenge to our Congressional Delegates and reporters who want to dig into this. Simply call up your local law enforcement and ask "In cases where a felon had possession of a firearm or a firearm was used in a crime, in how many cases have the ATF placed federal charges on this person?" ...

National Rifle Association under fire

The July Fourth fireworks over the Washington Monument are nothing compared with the sounds of battle accompanying an uncommon war raging on Capitol Hill, gun-rights Web sites and radio talk shows.

Under fire is the National Rifle Association's embrace of what some are calling the most important gun-control measure passed in the House in years.

The NRA collaborated with its usual arch-nemesis, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, to craft a bill that would close a loophole in the 1993 Brady law ...

While the NRA says its participation made the measure less draconian and even gained back some ground lost in earlier gun-control battles, the Gun Owners of America and even a loud chorus of NRA backers are blasting the group for heresy.

What Does Freedom Mean Anymore?

It is worth remembering during this week divided by an Independence Day holiday that as Americans we are united by freedom, perhaps even as many freedoms as there are of us. That is both the ideal and the reality of America, that each one of us enjoys a freedom all our own, to defend through participation or allow abrogated through indifference. ...

When learned and thoughtful Americans irrespective of political persuasion think of freedom, they undoubtedly think firstly of the First Amendment of our Constitution ... Some also would automatically think of the Second Amendment, with its freedom of the people to keep and bear arms, and of the Fourth, with its freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.

"Only one little problem with the implication that gun control is somehow responsible for plummeting crime... the Sullivan Act - THE major gun control legislation that allowed New York to become the fascist hellhole it is today - was enacted in 1911. That's right. 1911. I guess it took gun control nearly 90 years to work its magic? The New York City permitting and registration scheme for rifles and shotguns was passed in 1967. Why did it take nearly 30 years to work? And while homicides in New York city have finally begun to decrease, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) for 2000, New York was listed as one of the most homicide-ridden cities in the nation..."

NRA meddling with gun laws

It's a harsh, political reality that few gun-control measures become law without a fight with the National Rifle Association. So forgive the natural suspicion that arises on the rare occasion the NRA agrees to tighten gun-violence safeguards. ...

The NRA says it supports the move because it tightens existing safeguards, rather than expand controls. But, no surprise, there's a gimmie or two for the NRA. Among the most troubling is the exclusion from the background-check system of veterans with mental health problems. No disrespect to these veterans' service to this country, but wouldn't you want to keep weapons from troubled individuals actually trained to hit a target?

... In his book "Frontier Violence: Another Look," W. Eugene Hollon writes that the murder weapon most preferred by Americans before the Civil War was the knife or the bludgeon. After the war, the weapon of choice was the gun. The change occurred for several reasons. Large numbers of firearms and the technological improvements to those firearms made guns cheaper and easier to use. Prior to the war, all firearms had been single-shot weapons, which required continuous reloading. Starting in 1866, Winchester made and sold the first commercially available repeating firearms, both rifles and handguns. ...

A Senate committee has approved a pro-illegal-firearms, anti-cop amendment. The lamebrainchild of Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the measure would put tight handcuffs on police use of federal gun-trace data - data that had been freely available until four years ago, when legislation sponsored by Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) interfered with law enforcement's ability to track weapons traced to crimes.

Ten years later, officials say gun-carrying citizens responsible, deterring crime.

If the number of concealed-handgun license holders is any indication, robbers may have to worry about getting more than stolen goods during a heist.

With an increasing number of state residents legally packing heat, more robbers may be taking away some hot lead.

More than 54,000 Oklahomans are licensed to carry concealed handguns under the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, said Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. ...

A single, laminated flower hangs from the refrigerator in Richard Dyers Lawrence apartment.

You know, the art-project kind where the petals are made from a cutout of a small childs hand. Hanging next to a Kansas City Royals schedule, it paints a grandfatherly picture.

Dyers curly white beard, a half-finished Sudoku puzzle on the kitchen table, and how he leans in and turns his ear toward you to hear better, add to the image.

But dont let the 57-year-old, self-professed bookworm fool you. He can show you a different side, not that he would want to, nor that you would want to see it.

One thing a firearm does for you is it gives you the ability to look someone in the eye and say no, and mean it, Dyer said. ...

Immigration Bill Dead For Now -- Gun owners unheralded in media, but played a huge role in the defeat of bill

Well, the American public has spoken.

If you ever wondered whether your activism pays off, then look no further than the immigration debate. The bill went down in flames yesterday by a vote of 53-46.

And good thing too, because this bill was packing more than just immigration stuff -- it also contained anti-gun language as well.

But what else would you expect from a Ted Kennedy bill?

In addition to denying many law-abiding gun owners their right to find a job or buy a gun, the bill could have put every major gun shop out of business, something which the anti-gun left has been trying to do for years.

In the wake of the shootings at Virginia Tech University this past April, New York State Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Brentwood) has sponsored a bill that aims to create a "disqualifying information" registry to enhance gun control throughout New York State. Information contained in the registry would be used to prevent mentally ill individuals, or those who are suspected or convicted of a crime, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. The gun control legislation passed in the state Assembly on June 14 and, as of press time, was still waiting to be voted on by the state Senate. [emphasis added] ...

A total of 103 bills approved by state legislators this year and signed into law by Gov. Bill Richardson will take effect today. ...

House Bill 588 allows residents with concealed-carry licenses for handguns to take them into convenience stores or grocery stores that sell packaged liquor. Previously, license holders weren't allowed to enter establishments that sold liquor, whether packaged or not. Businesses that sell beverages for consumption at the premises, however, will still be off-limits.

A Toronto police officer is facing criminal charges after his cruiser collided with a car late last year.

Peter Eckersall was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm Friday after a Special Investigations Unit probe into the accident.

The SIU said in a statement the officer's car was traveling westbound on Ellesmere road responding to a 911 weapons call on October 5, 2006 when it crashed into a vehicle driving the opposite direction.

The 40-year-old female driving the other car suffered multiple fractures. The passenger, the woman's 10-year-old daughter, wasn't injured.

Based on evidence from the investigation the SIU concluded that there were reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence. ...

Instigated by the Virginia Tech shootings, the U.S. House recently passed gun legislation supported by an unlikely alliance between the National Rifle Association and the Democratic Party.

The bill expedites the incorporation of individuals prohibited by law from buying firearms into a national data base for background checks maintained by the FBI.

With NRA support, the measure is expected to obtain Senate approval and become the first major gun legislation in more than a decade. Although a positive step, the legislation highlights the ability of the NRA and other gun rights groups to influence government policy and public opinion regarding firearms. ...
