I visited the Statue of Liberty for the first time last week. The morning trip to the island required only a short line to the ferry, a cursory bag inspection by bored state security. The ferry is not cheap, but visiting Liberty Island itself is "free."
When we docked on Liberty Island, a long, wrap-around line was evident, containing people from an earlier ferry, as well as those from ours. It was reminiscent of a line for a broken ride at Disney World, before the linees know that the ride isnt going anywhere.
About 90 minutes later we arrived at the security checkpoint, complete with a number of GE EntryScan walkthrough devices, the "puffer." Interestingly, DHS trained Park Service federales required all visitors of Liberty to remove sweaters, jackets and belts but we were allowed to wear our shoes, as opposed to TSA predilection for bare feet. |

In 2002, privacy activist John Gilmore gained national press attention when he attempted to fly to Washington, DC without showing identification in the airport. It didnt go well.
I am proud of the firearms that I own. I am proud of my right to travel with them. I am proud to be seen with them in public. I like the fact that other citizens can see one of their ranks casually waiting in a line or proceeding to a destination while clearly armed. Now, I will admit that part of this involves the acute thrill of knowing that one or two anti-gun types are quietly wringing their hands confronted with the plain reality of a freedom that they do not understand or support. But there is something more, something much more.

BRATTLEBORO -- The jury began deliberations Tuesday in the second-degree murder trial of David Boglioli.
After closing statements by Deputy State's Attorney David Gartenstein and defense attorney Matthew Harnett, the jury must decide whether to find Boglioli guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his neighbor, George Riccitelli, or if he was defending himself from being beaten with an ax handle.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Boglioli will face a sentence of 20 years to life in prison. |

"And Franken's position on guns?"
"'See, I've never owned a gun,' Franken wrote in a smarmy attack on those who do in Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot."
"'I won't allow one in the house.'"
"And let us not forget Franken's attendance at a Brady Campaign/Million Mom March reception to honor Teddy Kennedy's wife for her work in exploiting children to advance citizen disarmament."
"312 votes. And now this bad political joke will be played out on the rest of us."

FAIRFAX, Va. The Arizona Senate passed three important self-defense bills in a session that lasted into the early morning hours Wednesday. First, Senate Bill 1113 enables law-abiding right-to-carry permit holders to carry firearms for self-defense in restaurants. This NRA-backed bill passed by an overwhelming, bi-partisan majority of 19-8 and will now be sent to Governor Jan Brewers (R) desk for her consideration.

PHOENIX (AP) -- A state appeals court on Tuesday ordered a new trial for a 62-year-old retired teacher convicted of murder in the shooting death of a hiker in northern Arizona five years ago.
Harold Fish claimed he shot Grant Kuenzli in self-defense during their encounter in the Coconino National Forest, but a jury convicted him and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
The case galvanized gun-rights supporters, who said Fish's conviction represented a threat to their right to protect themselves, and prompted the Arizona Legislature to change the law to shift the burden of proof in self-defense claim cases from the defendant to the prosecutor. |

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. - Hundreds of guns are off the streets in Central Falls after the mayor used his own money to pay $50 for each firearm surrendered by residents.
WPRI-TV reported Monday that at least 225 rifles, shotguns and pistols were surrendered at the Wyatt Detention Facility on Saturday.
The Providence Journal reports that Moreau announced the program last week, promising that no one would be questioned about where and how they got the firearm. |

So young CAU Megan Fox was asked . . . what she would say to Megatron to keep him from destroying the world. Her reply?
Id barter with him, and say instead of the entire planet, can you just take out all of the white trash, hillbilly, anti-gay, super bible-beating people in Middle America?
Coming from a girl supposedly raised in Tennessee, that seems a bit odd, but perhaps her brain cells have been poisoned by an overdose of tattoo ink.
In any event, it is somehow reassuring to note that the whole "Peace-in-our-time"-appeasement groveling-before-tyranny theme is still extant in the Collectivist Alternate Universe that claims to be the United States of America.

The Murfreesboro City Council member who was championing the new guns-in-parks law isn't so sure about it anymore. Toby Gilley did argue it was the right of all God-fearing Americans to waltz around in your city park with his handgun. But Murfreesboro could lose the state high school Spring Fling tournament because--get this!--TSSAA officials think guns are dangerous! Now, the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal reports, Gilley is "shooting for a compromise." Heh. Guess there are legitimate limits to Second Amendment rights. |

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - If Murfreesboro decides to allow guns in parks it could cost the city the annual Spring Fling event and the $3.5 million it brings in from tourism.
The executive director of TSSAA said there is no way they would allow the week-long high school sport state tournaments to be played at a park where guns are allowed. |

If Arizona's state Legislature, now in session, fulfills its blood-oath bond with the National Rifle Association, the state will become the 41st to legalize carrying concealed handguns into restaurants that serve alcohol. Arizona restaurants oppose the legislation. However, restaurateurs discovered their rights have scant standing when the NRA yelps that gun owners deserve their "rights" and obliging politicians jump.
Long ago when the NRA was founded as an educational rifle owners' and sportsmen's organization, handguns and militant overkill about the Second Amendment had no discernible roles. Then an ultra-conservative element took over and transformed the NRA into a political juggernaut with a war chest of millions of dollars to threaten politicians with defeat if they didn't dance to the NRA tune. |

Elements of the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division are still taking orders from the Clinton Administration. It is D plus five and the 24th (-) is advancing to support an airmobile attempt to secure for the Clintonistas the assets of the Anniston Army Depot which is being held by a composite force of regulars, National Guardsmen and militiamen under orders from the Governor of Alabama.
The 24th (-) is driving west out of Georgia, having first secured the Atlanta area. Your unit has been assigned the task of harassing and delaying the enemy as much as possible. At this precise moment, you find yourself cut off from your squad after some particularly intense street fighting in downtown Anniston. |

John Brown had attacked with about twenty men. Several, including two of his sons, had been killed by local militia. He and his remaining men withdrew to a small brick building. The attack had failed. Not one slave had come to Harpers Ferry to help Brown. |

There are many law-abiding citizens who own firearms, principally for self defense. Those who do, whether they choose to conceal carry or not, need to know such things as Todd Von Bender teaches in his "Concealed Carry Training" classes, through the Armed Citizens League. |

House Democratic leaders recently scrapped plans to consider the voting rights legislation this summer, after acknowledging their ranks were split on the gun measure and that D.C. leaders were unwilling to compromise. It's not clear when the bill will be revived, and advocates worry the issue could linger indefinitely.
The measure would negate the city's tough gun registration requirements and overturn its ban on rapid-fire semiautomatic weapons.
Residents say the amendment puts the city in a bind: Winning the vote means forfeiting the right to set tough firearms policies in a city that had 186 homicides last year, while halting the bill jeopardizes a right they believe is 200 years overdue. |

It's not right that a Chicago police officer didn't get time in jail for the brutal beating of a female bartender half his size.
Anthony Abbate, a 250-pound cop, received a sentence of 130 hours of community service at a homeless shelter and must attend an anger management class.
That's barely a slap on a wrist for a guy who grabbed a 120-pound female bartender by the hair and starting bashing her with his fists in a stupid, drunken rage.
Abbate and his attorney blame alcohol, without acknowledging that many people drink and don't beat up petite bartenders. |

Here's another thought: How would people have reacted if an imam at an American mosque asked people to bring guns to a service? In fact, how would those same people who went to Pagano's church have reacted? Would they have said, "Good for those Second Amendment-loving Muslims. America needs more Muslims to be carrying guns?" Uh, probably not all of them would have said that. Some would have condemned the act: "You see what a violent people they are? Muslims even bring guns into their house of worship!"
But if it takes place in the New Bethel Church in Louisville, Ky., it's OK? |

There is ample evidence beyond my say-so that shooters have no use at all for slobs in the woods who take their trash onto public land, dump it and shoot it to pieces and then drive off and leave the eyesore for everyone else to share. |

Fourth, her decision in Ricci was wrong, in both substance and procedure (i.e., the Second Circuit's summary disposition of the case). Here too, the claims of the plaintiff firefighters can be described sympathetically.
I don't expect the question of guns to play a significant role, beyond simply being mentioned. Judge Sotomayor sat on a panel concluding that the question of the Second Amendment's incorporation was previously settled by the Supreme Court, a result consistent with a Seventh Circuit panel that included Judges Posner and Easterbrook. That's a simple answer to the allegation that she is opposed to gun rights, and--beyond the committed gun rights community--this is an issue will get discussed simplistically. |

Amongst the myriad of assaults on the Second Amendment rights of American citizens undertaken by the Obama administration during the course of its first year in office, the one that stands out as the most alarming is the attempt to ban people who appear on the terrorist watch list from buying guns.
But isnt stopping terrorists from buying guns surely a sensible measure to take? The problem is that the terrorist watch list, sometimes called the no fly list, is not a list of likely terrorists, it is a sprawling database of of innocent people that contains the names of over one million Americans. This is a rise of 32% since 2007 alone. |
