"Back in the day, Dick Metcalf penned an article for Guns & Ammo advocating infringements on the Second Amendment. The Powers That Be fired Metcalf and the magazines editor. Anti-gun activists immediately leaped to Metcalfs defense. They used his dismissal to try to prove that the supporters of firearms freedom are intolerant hypocrites that will not tolerate 'dialogue' or the slightest dissent within their own ranks. ..."

"RF and I recently discussed a machine gun attack on Pakistani airliner. RF believed the incident proves that airplane carry is relatively safe. More than that, he believes that concealed carry on an airplane is A-OK. Or, rather, should be an A-OK thing to do. While I understand his point about Americans gun rights and agree with him on an ideological level, I cant agree on a practical basis. I think there are one or two rather important points that Robert was ignoring that are muy importante when considering this issue, points that make my own point of view almost completely the opposite of his . . ." ... |

"Taking my cue from fellow Write Team member Nathan Hovious, I felt obliged to render my take on the omnipresent gun issue."
"Every possible argument has been made from both sides of the political aisle Second Amendment hysteria, floundering background checks, assault rifle moratoriums. With catastrophic numbers of Americans killed in gun violence each year, it would seem something, for better or worse, would have been enacted by now. We are still waiting."

"America's shooters have had around five years of trouble finding enough bullets for their guns. In the years after President Obama's 2008 election, then again after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting ... big-spending gun aficionados left manufacturers struggling to keep shelves full. Now, the shortage seems to be winding down."
"Demand has remained high since 2008, in part because some gun owners, frightened that Obama would tighten gun control laws, went into panic mode. But that's only one side of it. The problem is that supply never seemed to quite meet that demand. And that's in part because ... skittish manufacturers don't believe the panic will last long enough to make it worth the investment in costly new factories." ... |

... "No one has tried to define exactly what 'universal background check' means and how it would differ from the existing NICS program. NICS, run by the FBI, is used by Federal Firearms Licensed Dealers in all 50 states and is mandated in 30 states, Illinois being one of them. NICS has run 100 million background checks in the last 10 years, resulting in 700,000 purchase refusals ( 7/10 of 1%) of which very few have been tried and convicted. " ...

... "In order to ensure that these prohibited people cannot obtain a gun as easily as they do now, the FBI maintains [NICS] where the names of these individuals are stored. Before selling a gun, a [FFL] is required to check with the NICS to make sure that the buyer is not on the prohibited list. Filling out the paperwork and checking with the NICS takes only a few minutes and 90% of the inquiries are resolved while the gun dealer is still on the phone."

TO REMEMBER |
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin Historical Review of Pennsylvania. [Note: This sentence was often quoted in the Revolutionary period. It occurs even so early as November, 1755, in an answer by the Assembly of Pennsylvania to the Governor, and forms the motto of Franklin's "Historical Review," 1759, appearing also in the body of the work. Frothingham: Rise of the Republic of the United States, p. 413. ] |
