"East Pikeland Police Chief James Franciscus, who serves as Chester County Police Chiefs Association financial secretary, supports extending the ban."
"'If the ban is lifted, people will be able to purchase fully automatic weapons, and they will be able to use those automatic weapons,' he said. 'It could jeopardize the lives of the public or police officers or others.'" [emphasis added] -------

... "Bans on assault weapons may be well-intended, but they're ultimately pointless."
"'I didn't do my homework on that vote,' Platts now admits. A little homework, he says, would have shown that the difference between an 'assault weapon' and a hunting or target-shooting weapon is largely semantic. Put a certain fold-up stock or other feature on a legal rifle, and it becomes an 'assault weapon.' ..." ...
"In that sense, we certainly agree with Rep. Platts' 1994 comment that 'there are certain weapons that don't belong on the streets.'"
"Actually, no weapon belongs on the street. At a rifle range, or in the woods during hunting season? Yes. But stuck in a back pocket, in a holster under a jacket, or concealed in a purse or briefcase? No. That's just a recipe for disaster. As personal protection, guns seem to cause more problems than they solve." ... |

"One of my recent articles, entitled 'Timmy and Me,' stirred up even Moore controversy than I expected. But, fortunately, most of the email about the article was positive. In fact, several readers wrote to say that they had decided to make their first gun purchase after reading the article. A few even asked if I had any recommendations. Since I have several, I decided to write this article."
"Before I get started with the recommendations, I want to make sure that prospective gun owners develop a healthy respect for firearms and for the consequences of using deadly force. Thats why I recommend that everyone take a firearms safety course before making that first gun purchase, even if their state laws dont require it." ... |

"The latte grande at the Starbucks in Tysons Corner, Va., must have seemed extra steamy last month when two college students bellied up to the bar packing pistols on their hips, as casually as if they wore cellphones. Someone called the police, who confiscated the handguns and charged the students. But wait: the Catch-22 in Virginia's enfeebled gun control laws has kicked in."
"Sure there's a state law against carrying loaded firearms in public. But the lethal fine print defines 'firearm' as a 20-round-plus assault rifle. So smaller weapons, like the .22-caliber and 9-millimeter pistols the students flaunted in their holsters, are legal and no permit is required. The pistols were returned, thereby contributing to a celebratory mood among the state's gun enthusiasts. Now they're strutting their Second Amendment stuff among Main Street shoppers and restaurant diners in Washington's booming Virginia suburbs." ... -------
The media have been strutting their First Amendment stuff for over 200 years now.
KABA note: The "lethal fine print" actually specifies:
"For purposes of this section, "firearm" means any (i) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol that expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock or (ii) shotgun with a magazine which will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered." |

"With very few regular days left in this legislative cycle, time is running out for Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), John Warner (R-VA) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) to extend the Assault Weapon Ban. While Bush and his staffers have pledged multiple times to sign the bill into law if passed, GOP lawmakers are vowing that it will not be allowed on the House or Senate floor, thus protecting Bush from losing the support of the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA)." |
