"The National Rifle Association's decision to pull its 2007 annual members' meeting and convention out of Columbus, Ohio one week after that city passed a ban on so-called 'assault weapons' was correct and proper, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said today in a joint statement."
"The move will likely cost Columbus an estimated $15 to $20 million in lost revenues, and possibly the largest convention that city would ever have hosted."
"But SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb said American firearms owners shouldn't weep a single tear for the city. He called the ban 'cheap political grandstanding that will get very expensive for the Columbus business community' and a 'slap in the face' to law- abiding Ohio gun owners." ... |

"An old reprobate, a heavy-drinking veteran of many barroom brawls, once told me why he favored knives over guns when he needed to get out of a tight spot. Anyone who knows how to use knives, he said, knows that you can always put your thumb half-way up the blade, so you can just stick the guy, not kill him by accident."
"This story always comes to mind when we hear about yet another person dying on our city streets. There was such a tragedy on a corner near the UC campus on Sunday morning. One of Berkeleys golden children, a young woman full of joy and promise, was killed while she was out for an evening with her girlfriends. ... What is known, however, is that he used a gun, from some distance away." ... |

"To me, it doesn't matter what the store installs. The employee is still open to abuse in a confrontation with a robber. In such cases, what's the employee to do when alone in the store or service station? Does the employee put up a big defense against the robber or abuse?"
"No, that would be foolish on their part."
"Which is more important, a life or money? Much of the defense - whether behind a counter or when walking down the street - is pure common sense." ... -------

FULL TEXT BELOW:
A bill to be introduced soon in the Ohio Legislature would prohibit cities from enacting their own gun laws like the one passed by the Columbus City Council banning assault weapon sales. The measure is being written by the lead sponsor of the concealed-carry law, Representative James Aslanides, and it would also would restrict media access to gun permit records.
The Coshocton Republican says the provisions are among a number of loopholes in the state's gun laws that still need to be addressed.
Aslanides' bill also would clarify that cities cannot ban gun from parks or other places not designated as gun-free zones under state law.
In Columbus, guns defined as assault weapons can no longer be sold after August 11th and residents who already own one must register it with the city. |

For motorists wondering whether police are working on a quota system, an answer can be found in Montana.
A new policy requires state troopers to stop at least one vehicle an hour, whether the driver has done anything wrong or not. But the driver doesn't have to be ticketed, so police officials say it's not a quota system.
State police Colonel Paul Grimstad said the rule that took effect on Monday is intended to reduce traffic accidents and drunken driving.
Montana had the highest number of alcohol-related deaths per miles traveled in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report released in December 2003. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. Alexis de Tocqueville |
