TX: Wrong speed limit posting yields tickets (with video)

When his wife told him she got a speeding ticket, Joe Gadus figured she deserved it, she'd pay for it, and they'd move on.

"Like all married men, wife calls, says she got a speeding ticket, go to defensive driving, deferred disposition," said Gadus.

However, then he got to thinking and driving and photographing. Then he saw something no one else did, a mistake that was costly and careless and very easily missed.

It's right there. A speed limit sign, plain as day, but wrong as wrong can be.

Brave Sebastian, he of the Snowjob website found here, is once again waving the limp dick of NRA pusillanimity in public and praising political erectile dysfunction as a public good. Something about axe on stone, or some such silliness. Go to the link above for S-no-balls' take.

The uncomfortable truth of thing is rather found here in a little-noticed piece in The Hill newspaper.

And you still send money to the NRA, why?

A Sarasota man that was caught on camera allegedly being kicked by a Sarasota Police officer has been given a settlement check by the city. Now the FBI has been called in to investigate.

Juan Perez also signed a document which says he will basically release the city from any charges regarding the incident, which happened June 26th. But his attorney says his client, who doesn't speak English, was confused.

The video shows officer Christopher Childers taking Juan Perez into the booking area of the Sarasota County Jail. Perez had been arrested on charges of disorderly intoxication and obstruction. Officer Childers is seen going over to Perez, kicking him, then holding him down with his foot.

"As anybody would be looking at raw footage, I was very concerned. We wanted to make sure that we got to the bottom of this as soon as I could," says Sarasota Police Chief Peter Abbott.

Apparently the city worked quickly. Officer Childers was put on administrative leave, pending an investigation. And a $400 check has already been cut insuring Perez wont sue...as a settlement for the incident.

An amendment that would allow the legislatures of other states to dictate who can carry concealed weapons here in New York is a deadly bit of mischief that the U.S. Senate should reject. If it becomes law, states would be required to honor concealed carry permits issued by any other state.

Would you like to have an AK-47 machine with your car purchase? You might be taken aback with the offer but this marketing strategy worked for Max Motors of Missouri.

This stemmed from the success of a trial offer in which buyers were offered either a $250 fuel voucher or a voucher for a gun store. Owner Mark Muller said that it has introduced the AK-47 due to popular demand. He stressed however that he would be handing out the voucher to be used at a registered gun store. He isnt actually handing out the guns.

Senate Democrats are scrambling to produce 40 votes -- or a mere two-thirds of their caucus -- to defeat a GOP-led push to override state gun laws.

Republicans have twice this year scored significant pro-gun victories with substantial moderate Democratic support. The minority party lured away a whopping 27 swing-state Democrats to support looser rules on guns in national parks. And a similar coalition has stalled the District of Columbia's quest for House voting representation, by adding language to the Senate version to ease D.C. firearm restrictions

Russia: Russians Increase Purchases of Guns for Self-Defense

As the economic crisis deepens and fears of crime spread, not only are more Russians buying guns of various kinds including pistols and gas guns -- but many of them are buying more than one, trends that are prompting some Duma deputies to consider repealing existing restrictions on the purchase of hunting rifles for self-defense.

But as could be expected on the basis of the experience of other countries, many of these guns are not used for self-defense but rather in settling personal scores or, the Russian interior ministry says, in the kind of ethnic and group conflicts that have already left many dead and could claim more lives as gun ownership spreads (newizv.ru/news/2009-07-20/112048/).

Legislation filed by a local senator would allow citizens to carry self-defense sprays without a firearms identification card, and the bill is receiving overwhelming support from colleagues and public safety officials.

"It's so basic and straightforward. I don't understand why we just can't do this, especially in an era where we want to encourage people to take protective measures for their own personal well being," said Rep. Jennifer Callahan, D-Sutton. "It's amazing we still haven't done it."

Schumer sounds alarm over 'sneak' GOP gun bill

Sen. Charles Schumer warned that Republican "sneak attack" legislation could render New York State's law requiring handgun owners to obtain concealed carry licenses toothless.

The legislation, an amendment to the defense appropriations bill offered Friday by Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), would require New York and other states that issue concealed carry firearms permits to honor such permits issued in other states.

"To say that someone who gets a license in another state can then take their gun into Central Park or into Eisenhower Park without any checking with local law enforcement is appalling and could affect our safety," Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in an interview.

Handgun-carry permit holders nationally killed at least seven police officers and 44 private citizens in 31 different incidents in a 24-month period ending in April, according to a report issued today by the anti-gun Violence Policy Center.

The organization based its study on media reports across the U.S. because, it said, most states compile and release little data about crimes committed by permit holders.

The Senate begins debating an amendment Monday that would allow people issued concealed weapons permits in their home state to carry those concealed weapons in any state in the union.

The amendment to the defense authorization bill is sponsored by Republican South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who says it "enables citizens to protect themselves while respecting individual state firearms laws." A release from Thune's office claims that "states with concealed carry laws enjoy significantly lower violent crimes rates than those states that do not."

A pitched fight over handguns takes place in the Senate this week as gun control advocates move to block an amendment to the defense authorization bill that would allow armed citizens with state-approved concealed-carry permits to cross into another state that also allows the carrying of concealed weapons. The reciprocity amendment is being offered by South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who says it would require those crossing into a neighboring state to follow the rules governing concealed weapons in those localities.

Opposition, however, is fierce.... Sen. Frank Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat who has long fought gun groups, tomorrow is planning to launch his retaliation at a press conference.

A posse of Dems led by Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are threatening to filibuster a controversial amendment that would allow licensed handgun owners to carry their weapons into states that have similarly (sic) carrying laws.

Schumer, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Frank Lautenberg are (D-NJ) are trying to block the amendment...

The amendment could come up as early as this afternoon as an amendment on a defense spending bill -- and will be a tough vote for Democrats representing gun-friendly states. It's likely to pass -- unless Democrats can come up with another amendment that neutralizes the effort.

Ive met many fascinating and compelling people in my lifetime, but I can think of few who possessed the grace, intelligence and poise that Walter Cronkite did. Sarah and I were with him many times over the years, and he always lit up a room with that remarkable style.

"Five people, including two children, have been found bludgeoned to death in a Sydney home in an "horrific" mass murder with no apparent motive."

Submitter's note: I find this story interesting because it provides evidence that not only do strong gun control laws not prevent murder, they don't even prevent multiple-murders and mass murders. In fact, it seems to me that this family would have been better off in a country without strong gun control laws because they might have been able to defend themselves.

When Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) asked Wednesday whether citizens have a right to self-defense, Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor told the Senate Judiciary Committee, I dont know.

Unsatisfied, Coburn continued, But do you have an opinion, of whether or not in this country I personally, as an individual citizen, have a right to self-defense?

Sotomayor responded, I as I said, I dont know.

Van Alstyne expressed the idea that the right to self-defense is so basic as to be implied by the very nature of the Constitution itself. ...if government is unable to protect us from the threat of others to kill, why then we never gave to government the power to deprive us of our natural right of human self defense.

Kazelskis befriended 71-year-old Daniel Elve after meeting him while on patrol. Elve rarely leaves his house because of his health, but on one of those visits, Elve says the 12-year Sheriff's Department veteran stole money he kept hidden in a lockbox.

Kazelskis resigned from the Kent County Sheriff's Department after he was charged.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 2, 2009 and faces up to five years in prison for the felony.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. John Stuart Mills
