CHESHIRE, Conn. (AP) - A year ago, Dr. William Petit had a thriving medical practice. He lived in a comfortable colonial house adorned with flower gardens in an upscale Connecticut suburb with his wife and two daughters admired for their charitable works.
Then two intruders turned the tranquil setting into a suburban nightmare. The hours-long hostage drama ended with the slayings of his wife and two daughters July 23, 2007.
Police say the men with long criminal histories severely beat Petit and forced his wife.....
The crimes turned Cheshire, called the "Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut," from a town where many residents didn't bother to lock their doors to a place where people are increasingly buying guns.

The National Rifle Association is a lobbying colossus in this country, and it doesn't like to lose a political battle. Fortunately, the NRA is losing one that makes you scratch your head and ask yourself, "what were they thinking?" What they were thinking is this: The gun lobby believes America's college campuses are dangerous places for your children to be and wants the states to enact laws that would forbid any attempts to keep guns away from university classrooms, research labs, office buildings, arenas, dining halls, and dormitories. |

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer has been suspended for violating policy when he shocked a teen with a Taser gun for about 37 seconds, contributing to the teen's death. Police announced Wednesday that Officer Jerry Dawson Jr. held the Taser trigger until 17-year-old Darryl Turner fell to the floor during a confrontation at a north Charlotte grocery store. The officer later shocked Turner a second time for five seconds. |

What are the chances you will ever be attacked by armed assailants in a situation in which no one else can help you and your only chance for survival rests in using your own loaded firearm?
The chances are increasing all the time.
In fact, a good friend of mine just experienced this very thing – for the second time in his life!
His name is Charl van Wyk – and I have written about him before. Charl, a South African, is one of my heroes.
His first experience came in 1993 when he was attending a church service one Sunday evening. The church was invaded that night by heavily armed terrorists who threw grenades, fired automatic weapons and began killing as many Christians as they could. |

In all the states that have concealed carry, the crime rate has dropped significantly.
This is fact, just check the FBI records, so what Mayor Daley and the governor are saying is absolutely not true.
Now they are saying they will fight the Supreme Court ruling. Are they saying the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights do not apply to the citizens of Chicago?
If so, then neither does the First Amendment apply there, so the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times are operating illegally in that city.
When are people going to realize that an American citizen is an American citizen and that does not change because you cross state, county or city limits? |

Idaho members of a group that advocates for the right to openly carry handguns in public are turning heads by touring Zoo Boise while packing guns on their hips. Ten members of OpenCarry.org were allowed into the zoo Saturday after some initial confusion at the entrance about whether it was legal to bring an unconcealed handgun inside. Group member Carol Schultz of Nampa says: "Coming to the zoo was something we could do together, like any family would." Schultz says she's never without her handgun that she keeps in a holster attached to a heart-studded belt. Zoo visitor Alex Lundgren of Boise questioned the group's decision to bring firearms. He says: "Legal and appropriate are two different things." |

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court ruled that the District of Columbias highly restrictive ban on guns is unconstitutional. The ruling was anticipated across the nation. It was the first time the Court made a direct judgment about the right of individuals to keep and bear arms since the adoption of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. One would think that under these circumstances the D.C. government would get the message. Not a chance. The Washington D.C. City Council lives in its own world. |

While I can handle any kind and amount of punishment they give me knowing of my innocence, I am greatly pained by the suffering they have brought to my family. Despite that, you will find that I am more resolute in my stand now than I was before. The lies, the fabricated evidence, and threats and paid-off witnesses have not shaken me. There is but one path we can follow -- that of the truth. . . I am not the first, and I will not be the last innocent they go after with ulterior motives. . . When facing this much evil it can not be done alone, and will require the help of many. I can only hope that many others can follow my lead. If not, then our Republic is lost.
All my best to you, and thanks again,
David R. Olofson

In his dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens said that since the explicit purpose of the Second Amendment does not include hunting and self-defense, those uses of firearms couldn't have been intended by the Framers.
Those Framers clearly understood the principle of rights better than Stevens does. If one has a right, one may exercise it for any purpose consistent with the rights of others.
Keeping and bearing arms for self-defense or hunting violates no one else's right. |

Gun dealers will start selling the revolver this fall, with some profits going to the Second Amendment Foundation, a pro-gun legal-action group that is teaming with Smith & Wesson on the project.
“I think it’s a phenomenal idea. It’s going to be a collector’s item for sure,” said Jim Wallace, executive director of the Northboro-based Gun Owners’ Action League of Massachusetts. “I wouldn’t mind having it in my collection.”
Some see the special pistol as a shrewd move by Smith & Wesson to target gun enthusiasts, especially those who may still be sore about the company’s 2000 adoption of gun-safety measures to settle a federal lawsuit. |

I'd like to remind the writer that our violent crime rates have fallen, including homicides, as the number of gun owners has been rising. Florida currently has more than half a million concealed weapon licenses in effect.
His statistics are misleading. All children to age 14 are five times more likely to die from motor vehicle accidents than from firearms, and more than twice as likely to die from drowning, according to the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (2005). National Safety Council studies raise those proportions to 30 times more likely from automobiles and 10 times more likely from drowning. |

I am very disappointed in your comments regarding the D.C. v. Heller decision from the Supreme Court. They seem to indicate that you do not support the Bill of Rights as they were intended. It seems more to the point that you only want law enforcement officers and criminals to have guns while leaving the average law-abiding citizen defenseless. As an elected official you swore to uphold the Constitution. In that you have failed to live up to that oath. Your comments appear that you only want to uphold those portions of the Constitution that suit your needs. |

An 18-year-old man armed with a BB gun was fatally shot while trying to rob the residents of a Franklinton home yesterday afternoon, police said.
Police arrested his two alleged accomplices, one of whom was his brother, and charged them with murder for taking part in a crime that resulted in his death.
The resident who fired the fatal shot was released after questioning by police. A Franklin County grand jury will decide whether he acted in self-defense or should be indicted for a crime, police said. |

...What if the felon hasn't committed a violent crime, and is only guilty of, say, an economic crime like embezzlement? Seems that person wouldn't be as much a danger as someone who committed armed robbery or rape. Should lawmakers be required to distinguish between the two, given that the right to bear arms is an enumerated one in the Constitution?
...
I'm not trying to make a policy point here; I think most gun legislation seems pretty reasonable on its face, if ineffective at achieving the goal of broader safety.
But from a constitutional perspective, I think the high court ruling may necessitate a very deep conversation about felon gun rights, and may lead to some unexpected changes. |

Illinois’ 1970 Constitution provides gun grabbing counties and city councils with an invaluable mechanism so as to create two strata of gun rights in Illinois. One strata that would pass muster south of I. 80 in the more crimson part of Illinois, and another that would enable the northern regions of Illinois to infringe upon the second amendment rights of the law-abiding citizenry in cities like Evanston, Wilmette, and Chicago. The clause that enables such constitutional mischief is that pesky “subject only to the police power” in the Illinois Constitution’s Article 1, Section 22 of the Bill of Rights. |

Every four years, America’s attitude toward guns and gun control becomes a topic of discussion as candidates strike a balance between arguments about “public safety” and “owners’ rights.” The result is usually a photo op featuring the Democrat decked out in hunting gear and the Republican giving a speech about topics such as “trigger locks” and the responsibilities that come with gun ownership.
The gun issue may play a bigger role in the 2008 race between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain. The US Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 decision in June that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own a gun puts the focus on gun control in two ways. |

I wanted to share an op-ed I wrote for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. My main point is that the recent Supreme Court decision on the Second Amendment provides a chance to finally move forward on issues that impact hunters and shooters. My organization, the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA), is a gun rights organization, but we believe in a balanced approach. It's time to change the extreme politics that mark the debate over American's gun policy: |

Georgians should be thankful that they live in a free territory that fully embraces the Second Amendment. Not all Americans are so fortunate. Perhaps nowhere is this truer than in the nation's very own capital. Deprived of their constitutional right to keep and bear arms for 37 years, Washingtonians only now have been granted the right to protect themselves within the sanctity of their home. And it's about time. |

Submitter's Note: Mother blames gunmakers for son's death.
--
"As long as the gunmakers are getting their profits, they're going to continue to shell out all these big guns," she said. "And I feel like they have never experienced what we the poor people have experienced down here in the trenches. They apparently have never experienced losing someone like I have, like my family has." |

Alan Gura, Dick Heller's attorney, reports that the .22-caliber revolver his client began to register last week is the same weapon he tried to register in 2002 before suing the District of Columbia over its handgun ban. Therefore, Gura says, assuming Heller is allowed to register the revolver and keep it at home, "the city appears to be complying with the literal command of the [Supreme Court] judgment," which said "the District must permit [Heller] to register his handgun" as long as he is not "disqualified from the exercise of Second Amendment rights" (i.e., has no criminal or psychiatric record that bars him from owning a firearm). |

The Centennial City Council considered a similar ordinance last night that was already adopted by the Arapahoe County commissioners last month. The ordinance would outlaw thick sticks, projectile launchers and gas masks at protest sites. The man behind the measure is Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.
“First and foremost, this in no way, shape or form is intended to prohibit or interfere with free speech. This is a public safety issue,” he said. |
