The movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado has reignited the debate over assault weapons. Gun laws vary differently from state to state. The consequences of the weapons sold at the Coliseum Gun Traders in Uniondale, Long Island are not taken lightly. "Every gun is powerful. Every gun is capable of deadly force," said Andrew Chernoff, store manager at Coliseum Gun Traders LTD.. To buy any of the guns in here -- you must have a permit and pass a federal background check. "We have very stringent gun control laws in the State of New York," said Chernoff.

On Friday, America witnessed true terror on the television - in Aurora, Colorado, over 70 people were shot by a madman at a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. James Eagan Holmes, the suspect now in custody, had been planning the attack for months and, inside of his apartment yesterday, police authorities discovered a mini-arsenal of other deadly weapons. At the attack, he carried with him an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, shotgun and .40-caliber handgun along with thousands of clips to reload. As we mentioned yesterday, all of these murder weapons were bought legally.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of more outspoken gun-control advocates in Congress, said today that both Mitt Romney and President Obama should give the gun control issue a lot of consideration, but said now is a bad time to press the issue politically. I think that they should give it a lot of consideration, I think this is a bad time to embrace such a new subject, the California Democrat said said on Fox News Sunday. There has been no action because there is no outrage out there, people havent rallied forward.

In television journalism, few reporters are as controversial as Brian Ross of ABC News. ...
Ross came under attack again Friday when he reported that James Holmes, the suspect of todays theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., may have connections to the tea party basing that on a single web page that listed an Aurora-based Jim Holmes as a member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots. ...
The report which no other media touched and ABC News and Ross later would apologize for drew immediate criticism from right-wing bloggers and ultimately from journalism experts on both sides of the aisle who felt that Ross irresponsibly sought to politicize the tragedy and engender controversy.

Friday morning's shooting massacre by a sole suspect in an Aurora, Colo., multiplex theater is moving New York's conversation over guns away from the microstamping debate to one about the availability of weapons and background checks. New York politicians reserved some of their harshest criticism for their federal counterparts, including the presidential candidates and Congress. On Friday's "John Gambling Show" on WOR radio, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called out both President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney for failing to address the issue.

Gun control advocates sputter at their own impotence. The National Rifle Association is politically ascendant. And Barack Obama's White House pledges to safeguard the Second Amendment in its first official response to the deaths of at least 12 people in a mass shooting at a new Batman movie screening in suburban Denver.

... Sen. Frank Lautenberg's (D-N.J.) office is saying that he plans to reintroduce legislation that would curtail the ability of a shooter to fire at length without reloading.
"If reports are correct and a high-capacity gun magazine was used to commit these awful murders, Senator Lautenberg will absolutely renew his effort to limit the availability of this dangerous firearm attachment," Lautenberg's communications director Caley Gray told The Huffington Post.

Submitter's comment: What The Lout misses is that it was probably the 100-round drum magazine that caused Holmes's rifle to jam, thus saving lives.

Shooting suspect James Holmes applied to join a Colorado gun range last month but never became a member because of his behavior and a "bizarre" message on his voice mail greeting, the range's owner said Sunday.
Holmes, 24, emailed an application to join the Lead Valley Range in Byers on June 25 in which he said he was not a user of illegal drugs or a convicted felon, said owner Glenn Rotkovich.
But when Rotkovich called to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week, he said he heard Holmes' voice mail greeting that was "bizarre - guttural, freakish at best." ...
"There's something weird here," Rotkovich said he concluded.

Gun Control is a Religious Issue

These shootings would not have happened if the shooter did not have such easy access to firearms and ammunition. So religious people need to be invited to meditate on the connection between the more traditional "life issues" and the overdue need for stricter gun control. The oft-cited argument, "Guns don't kill people, people do," seems unconvincing. Of course people kill people; as people also procure abortions, decide on euthanasia and administer the death penalty. Human beings are agents in all these matters. The question is not so much how lives are ended, but how to make it more difficult to end lives.

The White House signaled today that President Obama, who has seldom shown much appetite to fight with the powerful National Rifle Association, did not intend to make a push for stricter gun controls in the wake of the shootings in Aurora, Colo.

The presidents views on this are, as he has stated and as he spelled out in the op-ed that was published in an Arizona newspaper, which is that he believes we need to take steps that protect Second Amendment rights of the American people but that ensure that we are not allowing weapons into the hands of individuals who should not, by existing law, obtain those weapons, White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Air Force One as the president flew to Colorado.

The killing of 12 people at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie in the Denver suburb of Aurora may spark a fresh round of soul-searching on America's relationship with guns but few predict any real change in the law.

That's because gun control advocates have largely lost the argument against the much more powerful gun lobby, and politicians know the issue is toxic with voters.

Twenty-six more members of Congress have signed on as co-sponsors to the Second Amendment Protection Act, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms announced today.

"This is good news," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb. "With a vote looming on the proposed United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, this sends a clear message to the Obama administration that the president will face real trouble if he or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signs any document that threatens our constitutionally-protected individual right to keep and bear arms."

If these so-called experts believe in what they say, let them put signs on their front lawns, front doors, windows and other areas of their home "Gun Free Zone" let them make themselves targets and stop putting society at risk with their foolishness.

An armed society is a polite society.

While these very same advocates would balk at my suggestion as they know it would make them a target for "crime."

This U.N. effort to regulate international arms trades has already been met with opposition from Second Amendment enthusiasts and criticism of President Obama.

While our political leaders worry about getting on the wrong side of gun control debate, Latinos are very progressive on the issue. An April report by the Pew Center found that Latinos are more likely to favor strict gun control laws that either whites or African-Americans. Similarly, a 2011 poll done by the bipartisan Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition found that 86 percent of Hispanic voters support requiring background checks on all gun sales. Sixty-nine percent believe the laws governing the sale of guns should be stronger. Perhaps in the future, as our numbers continue to grow, Hispanics will demand laws to limit the possibility of senseless gun violence.

A friend of mine wrote something on my Facebook page today that gave me pause: "Think of this: you cannot buy a 32 ounce soda in New York City, but you can buy a automatic assault rifle because the soda is bad for your health."

I would be hard-pressed to find a more succinct way to consider the disparity we often see within our fragmented American agenda.

The fate of the man who allegedly fired into a crowded Aurora movie theater depends mostly on this question: Was it the act of a madman living in his own reality or that of a calculating, cold-blooded killer?

Prosecutors likely will seek the death penalty for James Eagan Holmes, 24, who is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie Friday, numerous lawyers said Sunday. And, they said, his attorneys are almost sure to pursue an insanity defense.

Although it is nearly impossible to prevent a lone wolf like Aurora gunman, James Holmes, from planning for and preparing for an attack in our open society I believe it is possible and indeed necessary to address vulnerabilities that lone wolfs often use to their advantage. This Colorado attack came almost a year after another lone wolf, Anders Behring Breivik, killed 77 people in and around Oslo. It remains the most deadly terrorist attack in Norwegian history.

We can and should address the following vulnerabilities:
