"Barbara Beasley was the first person called to investigate when three suspicious men were stopped on federal land in remote northwest Nebraska. It didn't take the U.S. Forest Service official long to find what they had been doing: digging an 18-by-10-foot hole more than 2 feet deep that left the fossilized bones of a prehistoric rhinoceros called a brontothere exposed. Plaster used to take casts of the bones and excavating tools also were found."
"The men, it turns out, were poaching fossils on federal land - a practice the U.S. Forest Service says has become rampant in recent years at Oglala National Grasslands near Toadstool Geological Park." |

"With a second round of attempted terror attacks in London on their minds, the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday night approved 16 expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, making 14 of them permanent and extending two of the most controversial provisions for ten years." ...
"Supporters, including Republican leaders, said the legislation will help protect Americans by giving the government the power it needs to zero in on terror suspects; but critics say it gives the government too much power to intrude in the personal lives and personal records of law-abiding citizens." ... |

"People have accused me of being "obsessive and overzealous" on this issue but that's okay with me. Ask some of the senior citizens in Cuba who have been under Castro's repressive regime for 45 years how they feel now. I bet many of them wish they would have been a little more 'obsessive and overzealous' about their freedom in 1959, instead of standing by passively when the communists took over. Look what it's gotten them!" |

"I like to remind my Republican friends that the roots of the Brady Campaign are Republican to the core. I do it just to get them backpedaling after some dig about Democrats hating guns. I may also remind them that the original 1993 Assault Weapon Ban amendment could not have passed without Republican votes because eight Democrats voted NO and two of the eight were Nevada Senators Reid and Bryan."

"With archery deer season rapidly approaching, I also was thinking of the early muzzleloader season and wondering what 'those-in-the-know' had to say about modern muzzleloaders."
"So I went 'Yahooing,' and found all kinds of information on the use of modern muzzleloaders. There were some strong opinions about using the modern renditions of in-line muzzleloaders. There were those that felt that anything other than what 'Grand pappy' used was sacrilege to the sport of hunting. Other folks considered modern muzzleloading rifles as an efficiency type of weapon used to dispatch an animal quickly and humanely. I place myself in the latter group." |

"The anonymity of ammunition is being fought with the proposal of Assembly Bill 352, which, if passed, would require that every semiautomatic handgun sold after January 2009 be equipped with a new microstamping technology that would allow law enforcement officials to link the used bullet cases to the handguns from which they were fired."

Fifth letter on the page
A gun buyback has got to be one of the sillier things suggested. Does anyone think street gang members and people shooting each other over drug turf, the basic culprits, are going to turn in their guns?
Get the guns off the streets with tougher laws, and the National Rifle Association be hanged. The right to bear arms was for a time when people hunted for food, there were marauding Indians and the British were at the gates.
Things have changed, and so should the nebulous Second Amendment.
