A 61-year-old man was jailed Saturday afternoon after he allegedly shot a man who aggressively begged for money outside a McDonalds in downtown Everett, according to Everett police.
The alleged shooter lives in Marysville, Wash., and was a regular customer at the restaurant in the 2000 block of Everett Avenue. Police said he was asked for money on his way in just before 11:30 a.m., then went inside and ordered something to drink, and on his way out he was panhandled again.
The beggar, a 41-year-old man carrying Kentucky identification, followed the Marysville man out to his small pickup, police said. The older man grabbed a handgun and fired one shot into the beggars abdomen, police said. |

Four guys walk into a Central Florida Starbucks: The first guy has a holstered pistol, the second an assault rifle, the third a stinger missile, and the fourth has a bomb strapped to his back.
Because the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms, how many of these guys could be legally arrested, and, if so, for what legal reason? |

Harry Reid and Sharron Angle were the boogeymen in the backdrop of this week's political conventions in Las Vegas, with activists on the liberal and conservative side of the spectrum setting their sights on defeating the other. Reid (D-NV) and Angle (R-NV) each spent less than two hours addressing their respective groups -- Netroots Nation and RightOnline -- but their electoral showdown was high on the agenda at each.
Reid barely mentioned Angle during his remarks to Netroots Saturday, promising instead that he'd keep fighting for progressive agenda items like the public option and immigration reform. |

It is fitting that the last duel between the old ink-slingers at the Marble Palace was over guns.
Justices John Paul Stevens and Antonin Scalia have been taking shots at each other for more than two decades -- their grudging mutual respect apparently as deep as their disagreements.
Their last showdown before Stevens rode off into the sunset came in McDonald v. City of Chicago. The court's 5 to 4 decision said the Second Amendment applies to state and local governments as well as Congress. Scalia was in the majority, Stevens among the dissenters, and the two of them took about a third of the ruling's 214 pages to explain their reasonings. |

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, said he opposes a planned United Nations treaty that would regulate international sales of conventional weapons.
He said the term conventional weapons is interpreted by many non-U.N. members as rifles and shotguns, rather than major military artillery.
That, he said, could threaten Americans Second Amendment right to bear arms.
He also said the United Nations has a poor track record of handling international crises and shouldnt be left to regulate weapons. |

Since I grew up on a farm, being around guns, owning my own guns and hunting were important parts of my life. On many an afternoon, I would come home from school, get my dog, King, and head out to hunt squirrels or rabbits. My precious Mother would cook anything I caught.
I have hunted and owned guns all my life. Gun ownership is just a natural thing to me.
Although I'm not convinced that we should even be required to have carry permits, my wife, Pamper, and I both have them. I've had mine many years. She has had hers since 2006. |

The roughly two-minute program was produced by Citizens for Safety, a Boston nonprofit organization that fights what Executive Director Nancy Robinson called the "iron pipeline," or the business of illegal firearms trafficking.
The video features Mathes and Chelan Brown, a Springfield woman who said she owns two Smith & Wesson guns to protect herself.
Both speak in favor of the crime bill's proposed limit of gun purchases to one firearm per month. |

It was an unusual subject to come up at a local election forum. Asked why, at the Daily Press & Argus' recent debate, he emphasizes in his campaign literature his support for the Second Amendment is the right to bear arms under some special threat? state Senate candidate Joe Hune began talking about a proposed Arms Trade Treaty being discussed at the United Nations.
"The Second Amendment is near and dear to my heart. ... We have consistently heard, time and time again, that there are folks that are absolutely concerned with the United Nations' new treaty ... trying to essentially give some of our rights under the Second Amendment over to the U.N., which I think is absolutely the wrong place to go," Hune said. |

Beginning Thursday you can carry a concealed weapon in Arizona without a permit. We hope that if you choose to do so, you will also choose a safety course first - even though the training will no longer be required.
As the Star's Clayton Norman reports today, the state's new liberal weapons law will allow you to tote a firearm in your purse or briefcase or under a jacket without first taking a CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) safety course and getting a permit from the state.
Until Thursday, when the new law goes into effect, you can legally carry a weapon only openly, unless you have a concealed-carry permit. |

The Wild West is about to get wilder - on Thursday, Arizona will join Alaska and Vermont as one of the states with the country's most liberal gun laws.
Senate Bill 1108 removes the requirement that gun owners must be trained and licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
Arizona already allows for "open carry" - anyone not legally prohibited from possessing a firearm, such as convicted felons or those adjudicated mentally incompetent, can carry firearms in public as long as they are clearly visible. After Thursday, the requirement that weapons be displayed openly will be dropped, and anyone who is not a "prohibited possessor" will be able to carry concealed weapons. |

Target shooting is a popular recreational activity.
Guns may look and sound dangerous, but many shooters say it's just as safe as any other sport. Briar Rabbit in Zanesville celebrated the grand re-opening under new management, by hosting a sporting clay competition and a two gun match.
"The way it runs is you go to the line, and you will run your shotgun empty, discard it, open and empty, and then pull your pistol and finish up your ray of targets," said Event Coordinator, Tom Blanchard.
Thirty-one participants competed, even world recognized shooting instructor, Rob Pincus, showed up to watch the event. |

People walking the streets armed with guns must be dangerous, right? The Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center keep claiming that even those individuals who have legally obtained permits to carry concealed handguns are extremely dangerous. With millions of Americans already having been issued such permits from the various states, this is an important issue.
The gun control organizations have frequently made these claims in the press. The Associated Press articles by Erik Schelzig and by Jim Abrams have given extensive, uncritical coverage. Members of the gun control organizations have made these claims unchallenged on such places as Fox News and on the Huffington Post. |

It's a quote that keeps on giving, campaign after campaign. It's even slightly plausible, if you've followed Lee Fisher's positions on gun control. The quote, cited since at least 1994 by gun- rights advocates, political opponents (including the campaign of at least one Democrat), blogs and websites:
"I never met a gun control bill I didn't like."
But did Fisher really say it?
PolitiFact Ohio turned to groups that have used the quote against Fisher, including the Buckeye Firearms Association, the Ohio Republican Party and the campaign of Rob Portman, the Republican running against Fisher for the U.S. Senate. They all suggest his support for the Second Amendment runs from weak to nonexistent. |
