Everyone is quiet as lead shatters against steel targets, kicking up dirt and creating a loud pinging noise that bounces off the berms of the Saginaw Field and Stream Conservation Club.
Tucked away in the clubs small piece of land in Thomas Township west of Saginaw, a group of competitive shooters gathers every Wednesday in period attire: blue jeans, cowboy hats and leather vests. Each one has their own cowboy name that they use exclusively as they shoot their Colt 1911s.
This isnt just competitive shooting. This isnt just cowboy shooting. This is Wild Bunch shooting, and for the first time in Michigan, its fans in the club have gotten the opportunity to throw their own state championship. |

Whether it's wanting better accuracy or more power, inspiration for a new design in ammunition can come from many different sources and the result can be a significant advancement in cartridge design. For the .458 Lott, the inspiration was a near death encounter in Africa. Gun writer Jacques "Jack" Lott was hunting Cape buffalo with a .458 Winchester Magnum. He shot the buffalo, but could not stop it before it injured him. He returned from Africa on a quest to find or develop a cartridge more suitable for taking dangerous game. |

A recent online survey conducted last month by the Oregon Values and Beliefs Center in Portland revealed nearly 60% favored stricter federal gun regulations, and 56% said the same about the states regulations.
That was from a response of more than 1,400 Beaver State adults, according to the Oregon Capital Chronicle. The story appeared as Portland-based anti-gunners were delivering petitions to the Secretary of State in Salem to put a restrictive gun control measure on the November ballot that will ban original capacity magazines and require Oregonians to get a permit before they can legally purchase a firearm. |

Utah-based SilencerCo has updated its much-loved Osprey series of suppressors with a new timing mechanism that uses a single button to quickly index the can to the host firearm. While the original Osprey was nice, many often found its attaching lever kind of a PITA to be honest so the new Osprey 2.0-- which uses the same internals of the legacy suppressor-- stands to make it easier to time and thus upping the joy factor when it's quiet time. |

A recent Gallup poll asked Americans about their level of trust in various institutions. Of the 16 options, the one respondents identified as LEAST trustworthy with only 7% expressing a Great deal or Quite a lot of confidence in it was Congress. This was just below television news (at 11%) but also below such things as big business, large technology companies, banks, and small business.

The gun industrys report last week that there are 24 million AR-15/AK-47 rifles in America got us wondering why its Americas favorite weapon. In asking those who own and sell them, we heard the usual: The rifles are fun to shoot, theyre accurate, and there are thousands of configurations to play with.

Americans are rightly anguished by gun violence and the question of whats motivating the young men who have committed a succession of horrific mass murders. We seem to be fumbling around for answers: Is it racism and radicalization, or untreated mental illness, or toxic video games, or too-easy access to guns? |

The increasing popularity of mounting an optic on your defensive pistol has led to an explosion of interest in the world of red dot optics. There are optics for every task and purpose, from smaller-sized sights that are meant for subcompact pistols to closed-emitter optics that can serve double duty on the long gun of your choice. And speaking of long guns such as rifles and shotguns, let's not forget the utility of a red dot optic when it comes to making the shot quickly and accurately. The red dot revolution continues in 2022, with no signs of slowing down.

It seems that nearly every month we hear of increasing numbers of Americans who, motivated by domestic and international circumstances, are taking steps to embrace their individual right to keep and bear arms. It is surely a positive trend, and one that bodes well for the long-term viability of our republic. At the same time, however, we are reminded that people in many other countries are still denied fundamental human rights and are suffering under the oppression of socialism or communism.

While the majority of Washingtonians support legal hunting, more people than ever don't care, according to a survey commissioned by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and published Thursday. "Approval of legal, regulated hunting has decreased substantially, going from 88% in 2014 to 75% in 2022. Likewise, support for hunting is down for all given reasons or scenarios," states the report conducted by a Virginia-based survey research company focused on outdoor recreation and natural resources. "However, this is not accompanied by notable increases in opposition; rather, higher percentages of residents are giving neutral or 'do not know' responses. In fact, some questions show decreases in both support and opposition."
