"Until lawmakers vote on a top-priority gun rights bill, nothing else happens in the Senate. ..."
"That's the way Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has toughened up his style in the final days before the August break was to begin, learning from last year to leave no room for gun control advocates to derail legislation limiting lawsuits against the gun industry."
"Frist, R-Tenn., used Senate parliamentary procedures Wednesday to keep Democrats from dooming the measure with an amendment that would offend the National Rifle Association."
"Last year, the NRA abruptly withdrew its support from a similar bill after Democrats succeeded in adding a measure that would renew the expiring assault weapons ban. Frist took the bill down." ... |

"As the Senate moves closer to a vote this week on the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, gun-rights advocates are jubilant over the bipartisan support for the bill, which bans frivolous lawsuits targeting gun manufactures."
"National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said 2nd Amendment supporters have played a large role in politicians changing attitudes toward firearms. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (S 397), for example, has 56 co-sponsors in the Senate and 257 co-sponsors in the House--more than enough votes to pass. It is sponsored by Sen. Larry Craig (R.-Idaho) and Rep. Cliff Stearns (R.-Fla.)." ... |

On Monday, July 25, the Violence Policy Center issued a new report, A Foreign Affair: Contracting for U.S. Military and Law Enforcement Firearms revealing that, contrary to claims by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist that firearms litigation could result in U.S. armed forces having to depend on "foreign manufacturers" for their sidearms, the "American" company Senator Frist cited as being at risk, Beretta, is, in fact, a foreign company. That same day, the National Rifle Association issued a statement claiming that the VPC statement was false and that Beretta USA, located in Accokeek, Maryland, is not Italian. In response, VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand today released the following statement. |

"If we recall correctly, it was Shakespeare who wrote 'the first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.' That's going too far, but the Senate can do the metaphoric equivalent this week by voting to protect gun makers from lawsuits designed to put them out of business."
"Senate Republicans say they have 60 votes to pass the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which would protect gun makers from lawsuits claiming they are responsible for crimes committed with their products. The support includes at least 10 Democrats, which speaks volumes about the political shift against 'gun control' in recent years." ... |

"With temperatures soaring in the hot July sun, the only thing spinning faster than a ceiling fan is Sen. Dick Durbin's position on supporting the working families of Illinois."
"While in Chicago earlier this week, Durbin addressed the AFL- CIO convention by pledging to fight for working families. Yet, less than a day later, Durbin was in front of the press pledging to defeat a bill designed to save thousands of Illinois jobs from extinction."
"The bill in question S.397, would protect lawful firearm manufacturers and dealers from lawsuits seeking recovery of damages arising from crimes committed with firearms. The gun control movement, with the aid of high-powered trial lawyers, has been using such litigation in an attempt to bankrupt the nation's firearms industry. Without the protections offered by S.397, it will just be a matter of time before the firearm industry is driven to ruin by these frivolous, politically motivated lawsuits." ... |

"Shooting Master John Gannaway introduced us to the .700 Nitro Express recently. This cartridge, developed by Holland & Holland of England, is said to be the brainchild of the factory staff in response to the opinion of a customer who once said that the reason he packed a .600 when hunting elephant was simply that "They don't make a .700." Well, now they do. The .700 Nitro starts a .70-caliber, 1,000-grain bullet at 2,000 fps. The custom-made single-shot piece has a falling-block action, and at 16 pounds per unit, it is presumably best used in pairs since a double for this round would be too cumbersome to pack afield." ... |

POLICE have warned students against carrying toy guns to school.
The move comes after a St Francis Xavier student was cautioned over taking a cap gun to his outer-eastern school.
A teacher saw the boy showing the plastic toy pistol to friends on the school's oval in Beaconsfield.
A girl, 9, had earlier seen the boy showing the gun to a school mate at a train station.
Though the boy did not threaten or intend to harm anyone, police were called. |
