Due to the practically unlimited access to guns, the percentage of gun deaths has accelerated to dangerous amounts. It seems that our gun manufacturers have an unlimited control over our legislators. Is it their money that upholds our outdated Second Amendment? It is unbelievable that our highly intelligent members of the Supreme Court can close their eyes to the huge increase in gun deaths while backing an out-of-date Second Amendment. |

Four pro-gun members of the House Hispanic Caucus fired back at the National Rifle Association for opposing Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
We are concerned that your opposition will alienate Hispanic NRA members and dismayed that you may unnecessarily force some well-intentioned Senators to choose between disappointing the NRA or infuriating their Hispanic constituents, wrote Reps. Joe Baca of California, Solomon Ortiz and Silvestre Reyes of Texas and John Salazar of Colorado. The four Democrats noted that their own strong support for the rights of gun owners has earned us consistently high ratings from the NRA. |

Bad news for our many brave champions of the Second Amendment. The legislature may have enacted the guns-in-parks law last session, but that still doesn't mean they can stride around with their loaded pistols on playgrounds and ballfields.
In a new official opinion, Attorney General Bob Cooper placed a big caveat on the new law: Guns still are banned during times when public schools are using the athletic fields, playgrounds or other recreational facilities. At many parks, that's a lot of the time, as we all know. |

Jeers to Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).
They lead the debate against an amendment authored by Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and David Vitter (R-La.) to allow law-abiding individuals with conceal-carry permits to bring their firearms into other states that allow concealed carry. Cheers to Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) who spoke for the amendment and made a strong case for the right of self-defense. Extra jeers to Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) for, according to Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, voting yes, but being willing to vote no if the Lautenberg gun grabbing gang needed their vote.

The following story challenges the belief that resisting your attacker only escalates the violence. Just give them what they want and theyll leave you alive, right? Seattle residents Teresa Butz and her partner were in bed sleeping when Isaiah. M.K. Kalebu allegedly broke into their home and stabbed both multiple times. The women escaped the house, while Kalebu ran away. A neighbor heard somebody screaming for help and ran outside. Butz died at the scene from her injuries. A neighbor said Butz told him the attacker said that if they did what he asked, he wouldnt hurt them. Her last words: He lied, he lied. |

Spencer Cockrell says he expected to die the night of June 1, 2009. Cockrell and his wife, Sheila, own a cash checking [Ed.: check cashing?] business in Rocky Mount. That's why authorities think three men targeted the Cockrell's home that night, demanding money.
The kidnappers stripped Cockrell of his clothes and bound his hands and feet with apron strings. He says being tied up is the most helpless feeling in the world. But Spencer's helplessness turned to empowerment. Cockrell wiggled free and negotiated with the robbers giving them the keys to the store and the codes to the company safe. The robbers discussed the couple's fate and decided to kill them. |

Sessions, the ranking member of the committee, explained his decision in a column published today in USA Today.
"I don't believe that Judge Sotomayor has the deep-rooted convictions necessary to resist the siren call of judicial activism," he wrote. "She has evoked its mantra too often." |

Both of Idahos U.S. senators, Republicans Jim Risch and Mike Crapo, said today theyll vote against confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Differences on 2nd Amendment/gun rights issues were among the top concerns the two cited; both met with Sotomayor personally. There is no question she is a genuinely nice, smart and well-intentioned person, Risch said. However, her belief and pronouncement that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right is something I cannot accept. |

Plaxico Burress is a dumbass.
That doesnt mean he should spend a year or longer in jail, however.
Burress, as many can recall, accidentally shot himself in the leg with an unlicensed gun in a New York night club last year. The incident was stupid, regrettable, and dangerous.
But it was also isolated and left the assailant as the only victim involved.
So why send Burress to jail for such an extended period of time for making a fool of himself? |

On July 23, the U.S. Senate voted to defeat one of the most promising gun rights bills to come to the Senate floor in recent memory. The provision was introduced by Senator John Thune as an amendment to the annual defense authorization bill. It would have granted national reciprocity for concealed-carry permits, requiring all states that allow concealed firearms to honor those permits of other states. A majority of the senators 58 in total voted in favor of the amendment. Another 39 did not and the bill saw defeat as this tally put the measure 2 votes short of the 60 required for passage by Senate rules.

In the national debate over the right to bear arms, the election of Barack Obama was seen as a victory for those who want stricter gun controls. But so far, things haven't worked out that way. The president recently signed a law allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks.
Membership in the National Rifle Association, the NRA, has been rising and, as 60 Minutes and correspondent Lesley Stahl first reported in April, the financial crisis is having its own rather surprising effect: in past downturns people stocked up on things like canned soups, but this time it's guns. And even as the stock market was plummeting, shares in Smith and Wesson were going through the roof |

n response to Karens question about personal gun ownership, I would just note that Im definitely too tired and lazy to spend a lot of time researching guns, so I go with basic low-maintenance options. Laziness dictates that I use revolvers because automatics require actual maintenance and there are a lot of moving parts in those things. Revolvers require an occasional cleaning that requires minimal effort. So, a .357 revolver has to do. |

I was asked to start what we hope will become a sequence of blog posts from LRC bloggers talking about what guns they prefer for purposes of self-preservation in a defensive mode (yep, The Boss had something to do with this). The question is What do you prefer to own or carry? Before I answer my own question, that question brings me to this video interview with Ted Nugent (thanks to Richard Nikoley for the tip). Indeed, make fun of my linking to Ted if it amuses you, but there is virtually no one, especially of celebrity status, who so consistently gets it so right and so clear on guns and self-defense. |

The Idaho County Sheriff's Office had honored a Cottonwood woman with a certificate of achievement saying she showed true courage in the face of danger for fending off two prison escapees who tried to break into her home.
Cassidy Lockett was home with her young children late last month when she says two men tried to break into her home. She hid the children behind the couch, grabbed a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol and aimed it at a man who was already halfway through a window, climbing into her home.
Lockett says she pointed the gun at him and told him to get out or she'd shoot. She says he complied, and left along with another man who was trying to get through the locked front door. |

"You play the way you practice" was a favorite saying of my high school football coach back in the day. This statement is just as relevant to firearms training as it ever was to football. A large number of people, both those who are new to firearms self-defense and those who have been shooting for years, consider practicing at bulls-eye targets adequate for self-defense. Such training will only be adequate in the unlikely event an individual is attacked by a target with rings and numbers. Mental and realistic training is paramount when it comes to defending your life. |

Because I am a mere amateur when it comes to firearms in comparison with the LRC blogs resident Gun GoddessKaren De CosterI would like to impart a particular philosophy which I was told by my friend who is a gun aficionado (and was the one who introduced me to the world of firearms): Beware the man with one gun. In other words, for the vast majority of gun owners who are not the De Costers and the Ayoobs of the world, it is better to know how to use and maintain one gun that you are comfortable with rather than stockpiling an arsenal with which you only have a surface knowledge of the individual firearms which make up that arsenal. |

A Philadelphia man who claims he was caught in the crossfire during a shooting rampage by Marvin Harrison is suing the former all-pro wide receiver, saying that a bullet fired by Harrison is still lodged in his back.
In the suit, Robert Nixon, 33, claims he saw Harrison shoot at another man with guns in each of his hands on April 29, 2008, and continue to fire when the target fled the scene in his car. He said Harrison "continued shooting at the other person ... as [he] drove past plaintiff. In doing so, a bullet from defendant's handgun struck plaintiff in the back with great force and violence. |
