"The Brady Campaign has launched a website to criticize what it calls Dingell's 'dismal record' on 'gun violence protection.' Dingell, who has represented Michigan in Congress for nearly 47 years, is the first to be named to the Brady Campaign's 'Dangerous Dozen' list of congressional candidates in this year's elections. Other names will follow." |

"One day after federal agents found 600 hand grenades in his northeast Georgia home, a man was taken into custody Friday."
"The grenades, though unassembled, are illegal to possess without a federal license."
"Reached at his home prior to his detention, Greg Giannoni offered several explanations for having the grenades."
"He said he'd bought them 'legally over the course of time,' and intended to sell them as novelty items, such as paperweights."
"Jack Killorin, special agent in charge of the investigation for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which raided Giannoni's home Thursday, said the unassembled grenades were packaged individually in what he described as 'extraordinarily complete kits for assembling a bomb.' " |

Rod Allee, columnist for The Record, writes about the 'gun-shop free school zone' ordinance:
"Ridgefield has a shiny new ordinance banning gun shops within 100 feet of churches or schools."
"You might think that a borough's attempt to keep guns out of the sight of churchgoers and schoolchildren would be worthy of serious applause, but I'm having a hard time getting worked up about it."
"For one thing, the United States Supreme Court has already declared unconstitutional the so-called gun-free school zone law which was enacted in 1990 by Congress and signed by President Bush the first. This makes it kind of tough to believe that a judge will uphold the Ridgefield Borough Council's power to push gun shops out of school neighborhoods." |

Members of Congress want to see pilots carrying guns. The government is putting armed guards at ticket counters and other crowded areas in airports following the July 4 shooting in Los Angeles International Airport that ended in three deaths."
"But some social scientists and risk assessment experts say there is a point at which there is too much security, too many well-intentioned men and women parading around with weapons in an effort to stave off an invisible danger. Many Americans certainly say there is a real need to increase protection around the country's airline system, perhaps more so than in any other facet of daily life. "The fact that 1 out of 4 attempts to sneak a weapon through airport security is still successful has helped revive the idea of letting pilots carry guns."
AMUSING QUOTES FROM THIS ONE...
"...that extra manpower would cost more, but incognito marshals would be better shots and less likely to harm passengers."
Response: As if, somehow, a pilot cannot be trained but an "air marshal" can?
"...the main threat, has probably already moved on to plans not involving planes."
Response: We should all bet our lives on "probably"?
"A pilot's job is to fly, not be a deputy Wyatt Earp protecting the cockpit in a packed fuselage."
Response: How is a pilot supposed to fly when four determined terrorists are attacking him, tearing him away from the controls?
"If pilots have guns, then why not bus drivers, school guards, and other people controlling large crowds?"
Response: Sounds good.
"The Violence Policy Center notes that 21 percent of police officers killed with a handgun are shot with their own weapon."
Response: While VPC's gun prohibitionists are notorious for lying through their teeth, suffice it to say that most officers do not have the luxury of confronting someone trying to get through a narrow door -- but pilots sure do. The operative phrase is "fish in a barrel."
"Two pilots were recently fired for being intoxicated just before they were about to fly."
Response: Those guys were the exception, not the rule, and they've pleaded innocent, too -- but even a drunk pilot could hit a terrorist from three feet away while he's trying to come through the narrow doorway.
"A would-be terrorist who knows a pilot has a gun may be tempted to somehow take it away."
Response: Let 'em try. We'll place our bets on the pilot, as opposed to the F-16. |

NOTE: Site username: Newslinks Site password: Newslinks Must have cookies turned on for it to work. ------------- "Emma Gonzalez, 24, a high school clerk, was killed shortly after midnight after trying to serve a restraining order on a man who members of her family said had been stalking her, authorities said."
Fabian Acuna, 27, who lived two blocks from Gonzalez, argued with her in front of his home in the 10800 block of Mansel Avenue near Hawthorne Boulevard. Then Acuna pulled out a handgun, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Jauch.
" 'He shot [Gonzalez] once in the upper torso,' Jauch said. Then Acuna opened fire on Gonzalez's boyfriend, who was sitting in a car in front of the house, he said."
"Kenneth Tiegs, 32, was shot twice in the upper body, but was able to get his gun and return fire. Acuna was shot in the chest and later died at a hospital, authorities said. Gonzalez died at the scene."
LESSONS LEARNED:
1) If an unarmed woman is afraid enough of a man to file a restraining order against him, perhaps she shouldn't be the one to deliver it.
2) The unarmed woman is dead, but her armed boyfriend is alive -- and thanks to the armed boyfriend, the attacker is dead. Drawing a conclusion from that raw data is rather simple. |

"While the government acknowledges that there are tens of thousands of potential foreign terrorists living in the United States, not to mention some 9 million illegal aliens, and that the Immigration and Naturalization Service is woefully ill-equipped to locate even the most potentially dangerous foreign nationals on our soil, the House Judiciary Committee has found something more important for the INS to do: Reopen the cases of thousands of criminal aliens who have been deported from the United States."
"By an 18-15 vote, the Committee approved H.R. 1452, the ironically named 'Family Reunification Act of 2002,' that would permit aliens with criminal records to apply for relief from deportation and even allow those who have already been deported to return to the U.S. to press their claims. Under a compromise between the bill's author, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), and Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), aliens convicted of aggravated felonies could be permitted to remain in the U.S. H.R. 1452, if enacted, would reverse 1996 legislation that made it easier to deport criminal aliens." |

"Since the passage in the House there has been a steady stream of misinformation in the media concerning what this bill does. Because of this media blitz, Senate President Thomas F. Birmingham publicly denounced the legislation and stated that he would not preside over a senate that would gut our state's gun laws."
"It was apparent from the Senate President's comments that he had no real knowledge of the language contained in H.5102, but was acting on the bad information given to him by others. Since his statements to the media, GOAL has repeatedly attempted to meet with the Senate President and/or his staff so that we could supply him with factual information concerning the bill. To date the Senate President and his staff has refused to meet with GOAL to discuss the merits of the bill or any problems they might have with it." |
